Court Interpreter Training
At Kapi'olani Community College
This court interpreting course prepares learners to interpret in legal and court settings. It begins with a comprehensive introduction to the role of interpreters within the judicial system, emphasizing their critical importance. The program includes guidance on assignment procedures and the pathway to certification in court interpreting. Through a reciprocity agreement with the Judiciary, students who complete this course may become a Hawaiʻi State Judiciary Tier 1 court interpreter, if they also pass the Judiciary’s English and Ethics tests.
Topics covered:
- professional code of conduct and court standards that guide interpreterʻs ethics and practices
- aspects of the criminal procedures to enhance understanding of the legal context
- strategies for effective note-taking and memory retention to support accuracy in interpretation
Prerequisite:
- Bilingual with proficiency in native language and English
- Potential student should NOT have previously taken the State of Hawaiʻi Judiciary training workshop
This course is a hybrid class schedule with in-person sessions at Kapiʻolani Community College and online sessions via Zoom.
Dates: January 4 - February 12, 2025
In-Person Sessions: Saturdays, January 4, 11, 18, 25 from 8:30am - 12:00pm
Online Sessions: Wednesdays, January 8, 15, 22, 29, February 5, 12 from 5:30 - 6:45pm
Free Training for Qualified Students Through the Good Jobs Hawaiʻi Grant
Eligible criteria:
- Hawaiʻi resident, and
- Oʻahu resident, and
- U.S. citizen or permanent resident or COFA status
