Notes from Principal Chapman
Dear LHS Students, Staff and Families,
We made it! Happy Father’s Day to all the dads out there. We hope you have a lovely weekend being feted and appreciated. We also want to welcome new PPS Superintendent Dr. Kimberlee Armstrong back to PPS and thank her for her courage to lead our large and complex urban public school district. She is a warm and strong leader and we stand ready to help her sustain and improve our work with students and families. In addition to Pride Month celebrations, we will be celebrating Juneteenth in many beautiful ways in Portland and across Oregon. We recommend the Word is Bond Walking Tours in particular,
Families have asked about the recent PPS Board decision ending local school foundations' (LSF’s) ability to use funds raised to pay for FTE for staff and how that will impact LHS? The policy will not take place until 2025-2026 school year and next year Lincoln will still be able to use funds raised by FOL to pay for added teachers with 1/3rd of that cost going to fund PPS Equity Grants. Starting in the 2025-2026 school year, all funds raised at LHS by FOL will remain at Lincoln but will not be able to pay for added staff. This is true for all PTA’s and Booster clubs across PPS. There will be opportunities to donate to the new “Fund for PPS” to help support the PPS Equity Grants. Stay tuned for more information about that once the Fund gets going.
I was a guest speaker regarding the loss of Covid Relief Federal ESSR funds on NPR’s Consider This last weekend. At Lincoln, we are losing $116,000 of funds a year that we have used for tutoring, credit retrieval, and added paid teacher time. Other schools are losing paraeducator positions or teaching positions.
The most important source of funding is State funding and working together to sustain stable enrollment numbers. We ALL need to lean in and advocate for Oregon to finally fund a Quality Education Model as defined by our state. The next two years will be brutal if we don’t work with our state legislators to increase funding to cover higher costs. PPS like most other districts across Oregon started the elimination of jobs and layoff process this spring. We also all need to stick together and share our positive experiences about our children’s experiences in PPS K-8 settings. When we share negative experiences we encourage families to “peel off” to private schools or the suburbs and every 27 students we lose we lose a feeder or high school program, a feeder or high school teacher, and we help erode the strength of Lincoln HS and our neighborhood home values and community activities that support youth in our school catchment area. All of us need to be loud and proud ambassadors for our schools and our students who all benefit from a stable cohort of learners and families. Together we thrive and rise or as Coach Watson says, “The We is Greater than the Me”, and of course the Me is always better with a strong We.
I want to end by celebrating the exciting news that West Sylvan MS has been officially certified as an IB MYP program, joining Skyline and FAIS MS feeders. Kudos to Dr. Hunt and her team! The LHS Instructional Leadership Team, has also been working hard to focus on IB for all through the continuation of the MYP program here in the 9th and 10th grades. Special thanks to VP Steve Pape and Instructional Coach Emily Hensley and all of the teachers who completed hundreds of MYP unit planners over the past two years. We are ready for ALL 9th & 10th grade students to be IB MYP Scholars! Thank you to all of our DP teachers and IB Coordinator Kim Bliss as well. The data speaks for itself! Our IB DP cohort by the numbers:
88 Diploma Candidates (Largest group in history).
346 Individual testers.
917 Individual exams.
All students at the 11th & 12th Grades took at least 3 IB Diploma level courses.
LHS students are predicted to earn the equivalent of over one million dollars worth of credit at state institutions with their 2024 IB exam results. None of this would be possible without our IB educator’s wisdom, guidance and patience, and all that incredible skill building, feedback, and student portfolio management and support.
Lincoln is an incredible school, with dedicated professional educators, committed students, and supportive families. It’s been a year of challenges and successes, and we are proud of every student and staff member for doing their best and making it through the disruptions!
Go Cards!

Lincoln has THREE new head coaches joining our staff for next year. Please give them a warm Cardinal welcome!
Brent Reed - Girls Basketball: I'm thrilled to be joining the Lincoln High School Girls Basketball program as the new Head Coach! I grew up in California as a multi-sport athlete with a love for sports and I try to bring this passion to my coaching. After graduating from the University of Redlands, I started my career as a coach and science teacher at Dublin High School in California. After 5 years at Dublin High, my family decided to make a move up to Oregon. I have spent the last 3 years coaching with the girls basketball program at Lake Oswego High School.
My coaching philosophy goes beyond just winning games. I'm passionate about building a team culture that emphasizes teamwork, sportsmanship, and a lifelong love for basketball. My goal is to develop skilled players who are also strong students and positive role models on and off the court. Outside of coaching and teaching I enjoy hiking and camping with my family and 2 dogs. I am excited to become part of an awesome community here at Lincoln High School. Go Cards!!
Kendall Johnson - Girls Soccer: I was born and raised in Portland. My soccer journey began at age 6, playing for the Bridlemile Buckaroos. From there, I wore the following jerseys- Vista Soccer Club, FC Portland, Lincoln High School, University of Portland, Colorado Rush, U-20 USA, Sky Blue FC, Western Sydney Wanderers, Portland Thorns FC, Utah Royals FC, Olympic Club, and the California Storm.
Underneath the jersey has always been a girl who loves being outside, connecting with her teammates, perfecting her craft, winning, and clowning around in the process. More recently, I was living in the Bay Area coaching and training at COPA soccer training center. I met a coach there, Michael Mercado, who was as obsessed (possibly more) with soccer as myself. His brain worked differently. He saw the intricacies of the game that I didn’t see. I fell in love with him for reasons beyond soccer. Last year, we birthed a baby girl named Sophia, then decided to pack up a UHAUL, and move back to Portland. Michael will be coaching alongside me. You will be seeing him and our daughter around.
To return and coach at Lincoln with my family feels like a full circle moment. Soccer has taken me to some incredible places around the world, and I can honestly say that some of my favorite experiences come from playing at Lincoln. For the joy and camaraderie. I am grateful for the opportunity to immerse myself back into the community that raised me.
Aaliyana Balderas - Cheer: I have done cheerleading for 14 years, and it has and will forever be my passion! I cheered at Milwaukie High School, Portland State University, and Linfield University and have been coaching at West Portland Youth Cheer since. I love that cheerleading is more than just a sport. It teaches life lessons and skills, and I’m so lucky to be able to share my love for this sport! Come tryout for Cheer!

Congresswoman Suzanne Bonamici invites all middle and high school students who reside or attend school in the First Congressional District of Oregon to participate in the annual Congressional App Challenge! Students are able to register now and final submissions are due October 24th, 2024. Established by members of the U.S. House of Representatives in 2013, the Congressional App Challenge’s mission is to inspire, include, and innovate efforts around STEM, coding, and computer science education. In Congress, Congresswoman Bonamici serves on the Education and Workforce as well as the Science Space and Technology Committees and is a champion for well-rounded education and STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics) education. The competition encourages students to learn and practice coding by creating and exhibiting their software application, or “app”, for mobile, tablet, or computer devices on a platform of their choice. Students may compete as individuals or in teams of up to four. If competing as a team: at least 50% of the teammates must be eligible to compete in the district in which they are submitting their app. Students entering the competition must submit their app by October 24th, 2024 as well as provide a video demo explaining their app and what they learned through participating in the competition. The apps will be judged by a panel of local judges who work within the academic, software, and entrepreneurial fields. The app of the winning student or team in each participating congressional district will be featured on the U.S. House of Representatives’ website www.house.gov, and displayed in a U.S. Capitol exhibit. For additional details or to register, please visit www.congressionalappchallenge.us. Details and updates are also available on the Congresswoman’s website at https://bonamici.house.gov/appchallenge.
