Dear staff and families,
I am pleased to announce that Dr. John Melvin has been appointed to be the new principal at Duniway Elementary School.
Dr. Melvin has served PPS for the past six years. This past year he served as a Senior Director of Schools, supervising 12 principals and schools in North and Southeast Portland. Before this, Dr. Melvin served as principal of James John Elementary School for five years, where, thanks to his embrace of data-informed instruction, professional collaboration, and restorative justice practices, he led James John to achieve measurable improvements in student academic performance and disciplinary outcomes. A conversant Spanish speaker, he also strengthened the school’s Spanish Dual Language Immersion program and increased involvement of historically underserved families through crucial leadership decisions and the addition of culturally specific events to the school.
Prior to his time at James John, Dr. Melvin served as principal for 10 years in the cities of Oakland and Hayward in California. Under his leadership, Lincoln Elementary School in Oakland was recognized as a National Blue Ribbon Award in 2010. His experience also includes teaching middle school English and History.
Dr. Melvin earned his Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology from Hamilton College, his Master’s of Education in teaching from Mills College, and his Doctorate of Education from the University of California, Berkeley.
Please join me in congratulating Dr. John Melvin on being named Principal of Duniway Elementary School.
Cordially,
Dr. Jon Franco,
Chief of Schools
