Langston Life
May 2024
The End of the Year is Here!
It is truly hard to believe that we are at the end of our academic year already, with only 15 days left of school! The remainder of the school year is filled with exciting learning experiences and fun activities to keep students engaged all the way up to summer break. I want to thank students, families, and staff for an amazing school year at Langston! Report cards, iReady reports, and information for next school year (for upcoming 6th, 7th, and 8th grade students) will be sent home in a packet on the last day of school. Rising 9th grade families can expect information from the high school in August.
Student of the Month
CONGRATULATIONS to JUAN CANSECO, NOAH DOWLING, and TERRANCE WRIGHT for being our Principled students for the month of May! Principled students act with integrity and honesty, with a strong sense of fairness, justice and respect for the dignity of the individual, groups and communities. They take responsibility for their own actions and the consequences that accompany them. Great job, Juan, Noah, and Terrance!
CONGRATULATIONS to KENDRA LOEFFLER, LUIS MARCANO, and MOLLY CALDWELL-KEPNER for being our Reflective students for the month of June! Students who are reflective give thoughtful consideration to their own learning and experience. They are able to assess and understand their strengths and limitations in order to support their learning and personal development.
Candle of Knowledge
Candle of Knowledge is an academic reception and ceremony held at the end of each school year in celebration of students earning Honor or Merit Roll at least twice during the school year. I am thrilled to announce that a whopping 91% of students at Langston earned the honor of being invited to the ceremony this year! Ms. Slay, our school counselor, sent an invitation and information to families, asking for an RSVP if you plan to attend. Candle of Knowledge will take place on the evening of May 20th with a dessert reception beginning promptly at 6pm, followed by the ceremony at 6:30pm. Congratulations to Alexis Luckey, Brandon Bertoni, & Gabi Levy for being selected to deliver speeches during the ceremony and thank you to Miss Cromwell and the orchestra ensemble for performing at the start of the ceremony!
PBIS End-of-Year Reward
To reward students for meeting their PBIS goal each month of being in class at least 99% of their school day, Langston will travel to County Skateland on May 29th for skating fun! Skates could be limited in some sizes, so if students own a pair of skates, we encourage them to bring them with them to school on that day. Students are welcome to bring money of their own for food, snacks, and games (lunch will still take place at Langston).
Field Day
On Thursday, May 30th, You Belong will host a Field Day for students and staff! A fun-filled day is being planned that includes a cookout from our Food Services department. Parents, we need your help! If you are interested in volunteering to set-up, clean-up, run events, or serve food, please complete the Field Day Volunteers Google Form! Thanks in advance!!!
Good luck to Myka Steggall who will travel to Ashland to compete in the Power of the Pen State Competition!!!
CONGRATULATIONS to Scarlett Baker, Annalyn Bannick, Rose Boyer, Jayden Green, Evan Lehman, Alice Levy, Gabi Levy, Cowin Singleton, Bella Stauffer, Myka Steggall, and Avery Wheeler for being inducted into the Tri-M Honor Society!!!
Good luck to Kachi'na Smith, Jasmine McDearman, Cayman Noble, and Bella Nolan as they compete in the State Competition in the 4x100 Relay!!!
FAQs about the End-of-the-Year
- Is there an 8th-Grade Graduation?
- LMS stopped hosting 8th-grade graduation years ago, but we do celebrate our eighth graders with a clap-in from staff and lower grades, starting from the blacktop and leading into the cafeteria for their Awards Breakfast.
- Are families invited to the 8th-Grade Awards Breakfast?
- The Awards Breakfast is reserved for students and staff, but please check with your child at the end of the day to see their certificates as all students receive at least one award.
- Can students leave early on the last day?
- Students are expected to be in attendance for the full day on the last day of school. However, in special recognition, 8th-grade students completing the necessary permission slip will be excused for dismissal after the Awards Breakfast. The eighth-grade team will send home the permission slips with students on Monday, May 13th.
- Do other grade-levels have award ceremonies?
- The sixth and seventh grade teams usually plan special activities on the last day of school that could include passing out awards and certificates. While families are not invited to those in-school events, we do have athletic banquets throughout the year and an Academic reception and ceremony for Honor and Merit roll students at the end of the year (May 20th this year).
