We wanted to thank Mr. Randy Tiemann for a decade of amazing support for our students and staff and giving countless hours to the community of Mathis. We’ve been in discussion to find a way for Mr. Tiemann to have the opportunity to take care of his health without the constant rigor of serving as a campus principal. Mr. Tiemann will be riding off into the sunset a few months earlier than expected, but he has earned the right to a little relaxation and an opportunity to thrive for several years into the future. He will help grow our next generation of administrators and support the incoming interim principal at the middle school, Ms. Rox-anne Guajardo. Ms. Guajardo’s steady work ethic and previous principal experience, along with transitional support from Mr. Tiemann, ensure her success in supporting the middle school students and staff. We look forward to watching the transition of greatness shift in our leaders and will continue to support the middle school family with resources in action. Ms. Guajardo will be at the middle school campus learning from Mr. Tiemann next week, then take over leadership of the campus at the beginning of January, with Mr. Tiemann in a support role to ensure a smooth transition. We are enthusiastic about the quality of administrators we have that can step up to serve, while simultaneously being extremely thankful we have had the leader Randy Tiemann has been for many years. We wish him the best of luck when the day arrives that he rides away back home and hope everyone shares their great support for the new leader at the middle school, Ms. Guajardo.

Habitual tardiness is unacceptable behavior and could result in placement at the Discipline Alternative Education Program. Tardies will not be changed unless there has been an error 109 made by the teacher when it was given, or by the attendance clerk when recording tardies on the computer. Tardies will only be excused by the principal or designated administrator.

MATHIS MIDDLE SCHOOL BASKETBALL 2024-2025
DROP OFF AND PICK UP PROCEDURES
Student 7:15-7:50 A.M. drop off in the morning will be in front of the building. Students will walk to the cafeteria entering in the last door. Watch for students getting out of cars and crossing to the side walk. Do not enter the parking area in front of the gym where the buses drop off.
Pick up at 4:00 pm will be in the same location. Please be patient at this time. The lines will get shorter when football practice and volley ball practice as well as 21st Century begins.
Walkers will be released as soon as pick up students have exited the building
Dress Code
We have included an excerpt from the dress code.
All Students
• To avoid substantial disruption of the education process, apparel that contains inflammatory writing or graphics such as nudity, violence, satanic or obscene language will not be permitted. Students will not be permitted to wear clothing that suggests an affiliation or identification with groups that advocate unlawful activities including violence, drug, satanic, alcohol, or tobacco use.
• Apparel that advertises or depicts drug, alcohol or tobacco products is not permitted.
• Students may not wear clothing which is modified to or displays writing or pictures that suggest or depict sexual activity.
• No hats or caps are to be worn in the academic buildings ofthe school.When appropriate, caps may be worn but only with the bill of the cap to the front. Hats and caps will be confiscated and not returned until the end of the school year if worn inappropriately or inside the academic buildings unless worn for medical purposes.
• Hairstyles or colors of an unnatural disruptive or offensive nature are prohibited. Any highlighting of hair must be a natural color blend. Rules are interpreted at principal’s discretion.
• Hairstyles that cover the student’s face are not permitted.
• Shirts may be worn untucked if the shirt is squared-off at the bottom and no part of shirt extends past the fingertips when arms are extended down the sides of the body.
• Shirts may not be worn if any of the student's midriff shows when the student's arms are raised above the head.
• Shorts may be worn but must be hemmed and be no shorter than 3-inches above the knee.
• All students must wear shoes, flip flops are not allowed.
• The bottom garment must extend past the student’s longest fingertip when the arms are fully extended at their side. Shorts must have no holes or frayed edges above the knee. Ripped/frayed pants/jeans are only permitted if athletic shorts/leggings/patches are worn underneath or are covering the holes.
• All pants, jeans, and skirts must be worn at the waistline.
• Students may not wear sunglasses or colored glasses that obscure the eyes and interfere with the ability to make eye-to-eye contact. They are permitted only as a medical requirement verified by a medical provider's written statement.
• Students are not allowed to wear see-through clothing. A school appropriate shirt must be worn underneath any outer wear (jacket, hoodie, etc.)
• Tank tops and muscle shirts are not allowed. Undershirts are permitted only if covered by another non-underwear type shirt. Vests may be worn over sleeved shirts.
• Students are not allowed to wear tightly fitting tops or tops that have a low-cut front, side or back.
• Form fitting shirts, blouses, pants, and tights of any materials are not acceptable.
• Oversized jackets and long coats must be taken off upon arrival at school. This rule is to be interpreted at the principal’s discretion.
• Tattoos that show must be covered at all times during the school day or school function.
• Wallet chains or any type of chains on any apparel are not permitted on campus.
Female Students
• Earrings are permitted, but jewelry may not be worn in any pierced area of the body except the ear. Gauges are not permissible.
• Sleeveless blouses/dresses must be a minimum of three inches wide at the shoulder. No tank tops or spaghetti straps are permitted.
Male Students
• Sleeveless and/or mesh athletic-type jerseys must have a tee shirt worn underneath.
• Shirts must be buttoned.
• Loose fitting pants will be pulled to the waist and belted.
• Sideburns may not be below the earlobe.
• Faces will be clean shaven.
• Earrings, facial and body ornaments/piercing of any type are prohibited. Gauges are not permissible. Item(s) will be confiscated for six weeks.
Students in violation of the dress code will call home for a change of cloths.Possession of Telecommunications or Other Electronic Devices
Students shall not display, turn on, or use a telecommunications device, including a cellular
telephone, or other electronic device on school property during the school day.
Consequences:
1st Offense
▪ device/phone will be held for 10 school days
▪ $15 administrative fee
2nd Offense
▪ device/phone will be held for 15 school days
▪ 1 day Saturday In-School suspension or
corporal punishment (3)
▪ $15 administrative fee
3rd Offense
▪ device/phone will be held for 20 school days
▪ 3 day In-School Suspension
▪ $15 administrative fee
4th Offense
▪ device/phone will be held for 25 school days
▪ 30 school day placement at the DAEP.
▪ $15 administrative fee
Note: The day the device/phone is confiscated is day “0”. Consequences must be
served and completed prior to receiving the device/phone. The student’s parents
may acquire the device/phone from the principal after school on the last day of the
confiscation period
Tips for Families to help support School Attendance
Support your child to be successful in school
Help your child understand that school is their very first job!
· Make great school attendance a priority for your child.
· Talk to your child about the importance of daily attendance in every class and how it helps his/her learning.
· When students miss so much school they will not be prepared and start failing courses in middle school and dropping out of high school.
Help your child develop good habits
· Help your child practice good daily habits like:
o finishing homework and placing it in his/her backpack
o laying out clothes and the backpack in the evening
o having a regular bedtime for a good night's sleep
o leaving early enough in the morning to get to school on time.
o turn off electronic devices one hour before bedtime.
· Help your child build responsibility skills by reminding them to make up any missed schoolwork after an absence.
When your child is sick
· Only let your child stay home if he/she is truly sick. Sometimes complaints of a headache or stomachache might be a sign of anxiety and not a reason to stay home. Contact the teachers and school for support if you think this might be happening.
· Send your child to school and let the school nurse evaluate the child if it’s a mild illness
Appointments and vacations
· Make every effort to schedule doctor, dentist, and other appointments after school hours.
· If your child must be out of school for an appointment, get him/her back to school for at least part of the school day.
· Plan vacations when school is not in session.
Attendance records
· Contact the school every time your child is absent.
· Check your child's attendance regularly on Skyward or with school staff.
· Check and keep your contact information up to date with the school (phone numbers, address, parent’s work location, email address, etc.).
Keep Your Teen Interested in School
Talk with your teen about classes
· Ask about his/her school day.
· Learn which classes are engaging your teen's interests.
· Discuss ways to increase interest in classes your teen does not find engaging.
· Stay on top of your teen's academic progress and attendance.
Safety
· Ask your teen if he/she feels safe from bullies and other threats.
· Stay on top of your teen's social contacts.
· Discuss peer pressure and social isolation.
· Feeling pressure from other teens or feeling lonely at school can lead to skipping or missing school.
· Encourage meaningful after school activities, including sports and clubs.
· If your teen is feeling unsafe, losing interest and/or missing school, get help from school staff (Teacher, Counselor, Nurse, etc.).
Heading toward graduation
· Talk about why a high school diploma is important to your teen's future.
· Make it clear that missing school is unacceptable.
· Contact the school if you think your teen may be falling behind academically, missing school more than 2 days per month, or seems to be losing interest in school to help your teen stay on track for graduation.

School ends at 4:00 PM and car riders are dismissed first. All car riders are gone in 10-17 minutes. Walkers are dismissed next unless it is raining or lightning is present. Bus students are dismissed as the buses arrive.
