MUSTANG SPOTLIGHT - MS. EMILY SCHAEFER, INTERVENTION SPECIALIST AT SHS
Ms. Emily Schaefer is in her 10th year with Strongsville City Schools. Ms. Schaefer is an Intervention Specialist at Strongsville High School. She grew up in Strongsville and is also a graduate of SHS (Class of ‘00) - some of her former teachers are now colleagues! Ms. Schaefer earned her undergraduate degree from Cleveland State University and her graduate degree from Ursuline College.
“I like helping students find the best way of learning for them and allowing them to see their potential. It is fun to see the students growth and maturity throughout the year. I taught at the elementary and middle school levels before Strongsville City Schools. I like working with high school students the best. You can show your true personality with high school students once they get into the routine of the school year. I feel really lucky to work with people that truly care about our students and their well-being and academic growth. As an Intervention Specialist, I often work with students that need a lot of support and having a team of teachers that communicate on a regular basis really helps give these students the best support,” said Ms. Schaefer.
Thank you Ms. Schaefer for working with our SHS students and helping them gain the experience and knowledge to succeed after high school! #BeTheDifference

Baldwin Wallace Observatory Lecture (Friday, January 20)
Dr. Ralph Harvey, a professor in the Department of Earth, Environmental and Planetary Science at Case Western Reserve University, will present To Protect or Swerve: NASA's Planetary Defense Initiative and Meteorite Research, a lecture on NASA's plans and initiatives to protect Earth from a major asteroid impact on Friday, January 20 at 7:30pm. The free lecture is part of the Reinhold and Margaret Kader Memorial Astronomy Lecture Series at Baldwin Wallace University’s Kleist Center for Art & Drama, (95 East Bagley Road / Berea).
Planetary defense is the term used by NASA to encompass all the capabilities needed to detect the possibility and warn of potential asteroid or comet impacts with Earth, and then either prevent them or mitigate their possible effects. NASA’s Double Asteroid Redirection Test (DART), which was developed to test the ability to impact an asteroid to adjust its speed and path, was launched in November of 2021 and successfully impacted the intended asteroid on September 26, 2022.
After Dr. Harvey’s lecture, the Burrell Observatory will be open for viewing, weather permitting. While the event is free, tickets are required – click HERE to reserve your tickets.
Questions? Please contact Gary Kader, observatory director, by email at gkader@bw.edu or call the Department of Physics and Astronomy at 440.826.2312.

Wicked CLE. Tuesday, January 10th / 7:00 p.m. Award-winning true crime author Jane Turzillo brings together the strippers, gangsters, robbers, shady politicians and more from Cleveland’s to rough and rowdy past. From world-class museums and popular sports teams to peaceful parks and charming neighborhoods, Cleveland has a lot to offer. But it has a wilder, darker side. Along the one-block passageway called Short Vincent, tourists and celebrities mixed with bookies and mobsters for drinks and dinner, underworld gossip and all kinds of “entertainment.” In 1969, Ted Conrad disappeared with $215,000 in stolen cash. An obituary more than fifty years later finally told the authorities where he went. In the wee hours of March 24, 1970, someone slipped up to the front of the Cleveland Museum of Art and planted a bomb on the marble pedestal that supported Rodin’s The Thinker. Who and why remain unknown.
