Parent/Teacher Conferences

Oct. 19-20 5:00 – 8:00 p.m.

Sign-up for in-person, telephone, or TEAMS conference times. Watch for e-mail with a link allowing you to select date, time and type of conference with your student’s teachers. KMS Admin will be available to chat in person. Secretaries will also be available to assist with Power school or any other needs.

6th Grade Intramural Soccer

Still looking for a coach to take on 6th grade Intramural Soccer. Stay tuned for sign-up information.

Picture Re-Take Day Oct. 25

KMS Secretaries are working with LifeTouch. Please watch your email for a link from LifeTouch for your student's pictures. Students who were absent may get their pictures taken on October 25. Order forms are available in the 6th grade Office and KMS Main Office.

KMS Scholastic Book Fair

KMS will be holding an annual Scholastic Book Fair next week. Students will have opportunities to shop for books during the day Wednesday and Thursday (Oct. 19-20). The book fair will also be open to families during Parent Teacher Conferences (Oct. 19-20 5:00 - 8:00 p.m.) If you are interested in helping with the Fair contact Daisy Briones (Daisy.Briones@kibsd.org).

Red-Ribbon Spirit Week: Oct. 31-Nov. 4

Red Ribbon Week began in 1985, when in response to the murder of DEA Agent Enrique Camarena, angered parents and youth in communities across the country began wearing Red Ribbons as a symbol of their commitment to raise awareness of the killing and destruction cause by drugs in America.

During this week, KMS staff, counselors and students will work to raise awareness through lessons, assemblies, and daily themed dress up days. Watch for the "What to wear list" for this week to come out later.

Red Ribbon Week Assembly and Halloween Costume Parade - Oct. 31

On Monday, October 31 only, students may wear Halloween costumes to school. Basic guidelines: no masks, no blood (fake or real), no weapons. During Advisory, 6th grade students will have an Assembly with games and prizes for the best costume in different categories.

We finished up our email writing and are moving into our expository writing unit next week. We will be reading articles and stories relating to animals and their relationship with people. It should be a fun unit to read some interesting “stuff” and practice improving our writing skills. At home, students should still be reading their personal reading books and most nights will have less than 10 minutes of writing homework.

We are studying stars. Stars as individuals like our sun, constellations, galaxies, nebulas, and black holes. All the while we are trying to understand the ideas behind “perspective.”

We are diving into maps! Students looked at a variety of maps to determine common tools a mapmaker uses. We will practice using these tools to help us read and make maps this year.

This week in math, students began working on exponents. Ask your child which option is better: a $1 magic coin that doubles in value each day for 28 days, or $50,000 cash! We had a fun class activity exploring what happens to money when it doubles. Next week, we will be doing some skills practice on exponents in the coming days as well as continuing our reviewing of adding, subtracting, and multiplying decimals. (Students who have mastered those skills will be working on more challenging concepts.) We will also begin working on some basic 6th grade algebra, like in the expression 3x = 6, what does the x equal? Brush up on your algebra, families! 😊 As always, email me with any questions. We are completing our Hispanic Heritage Month unit with the career collage projects and a partner quiz using the Newsela article “Hispanic Students Have Mixed Feelings about Hispanic Heritage Month.” Students are also continuing to use i-Ready, our individualized learning app, with the goal of 45 minutes of active usage per week. We have started goal setting with i-Ready, and many students have already achieved the first goal of passing five lessons.

Students are actively using power equipment to make a slim-line pen. Students are also practicing measurement and will be putting those measurement skills to work when we build our wooden tic tac toe game.

This week in GT, we engaged social-emotional learning topics of definitions of success and managing expectations while advancing critical literacy skills of reading and writing. As homework, students were introduced to a game/activity exploring arbitrage as a concept by trading a paperclip with stakeholders around school to see who can return with the largest, most valuable item (all gained from strategically trading).
