National Education Week: 2018 Friend of Education Mrs. Becky Hefel
Speech Written by Mrs. Brenda Bodish, Kindergarten Teacher
For those of you who know Becky and her family and her extended family, you are probably not surprised that she is receiving this award. They are a kind, giving and hard working family. When you see Becky out and about, you are most likely greeted with a smile, a hug, and her asking how the kids at school are doing. But that is just a little background. How this relates to school---
Becky has 2 grandkids in our school, Coos and Stella. Since they started, she’s been coming in to read with their classrooms. I know she’s been a part of Judy Clefisch’s, Mary Streichs’ and Kathy Connelly’s, as well as mine. Becky first approached me when Coos was in Kindergarten. Now at that time, I had a student with a 1-1, another Associate, the Special Ed teacher who came in for a time, and the speech therapist who did lessons in the class. I thought (counting the numbers on my fingers) sure, come on in!
We found a little spot in the corner where she read with each student, amongst the organized chaos. Her only polite request, after a few weeks, was for a taller chair. Taller than our 12” chairs – we have a tiny classroom. We accommodated and she stayed with us for the year. The next year when Coos moved on to 1st grade, she approached me and asked if she could come back and read with my kids again. No connections to my room, just a desire to work with the kids. Of course, I said yes. That year, I had another student with a 1-1 who would often run around the classroom and another student who would sometimes have a bit of a meltdown if she could not read with Becky – Mr. Peterson, Julie, Miss Streich – you might know who I’m referring to. It did not phase Becky in the least. In fact – I’m pretty sure that student got a little extra Becky love when it did come time for her to read.
And this year, we once again have Becky at the back of the room, reading word lists with the kids. No official grandkids – those are in Mrs. Clefish’s and Mrs. Connelly’s rooms, which she visits, too.
It is not a surprise that when the Mentoring Program started up last year, Becky signed up and was chosen to be a mentor. What a positive figure she is for our students.
We have had Friends of Education give of their money, time, crafts, but Becky is one who gives of her heart. And if that is not a Friend of Education, I don’t know what is.

Palix Foundation, October 2013
The AFWI is pleased to present the core story of brain development in an accessible and visually engaging format for public audiences. The AFWI developed the video with considerable input from our partners at the Harvard Center on the Developing Child and the FrameWorks Institute. Using metaphors developed by FrameWorks and tested with audiences both in the US and in Alberta, “How Brains are Built” infuses core story concepts with energy, accessibility, and high fidelity to the science.
