Trussworthy Pals Bag 3rd Place in the 2023 AASHTO TRAC Bridge Challenge
Eighth-grade students Rony Quijada, Angel Adesoji, and Chiezita Uzoukwu known as “TRUSSworthy Pals” won 3rd Place in the 2023 AASHTO TRAC Bridge Challenge 7th-8th Grade Division held at Hyatt Regency Hotel in Seattle, Washington on May 15-18, 2023. Each team member and the teacher-advisor received a $200/$250 e-gift card.
The TRAC Bridge Challenge is a national competition designed to promote an interest in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). The program enhances math and science instruction and introduces students to engineering through hands-on real-world applications. Six teams were selected for every grade (7-8, 9-10, 11-12) division out of 86 teams across the United States, a total of eighteen teams competed through a 10-minute presentation using PowerPoint presentation, and tested the strength-to-weight ratio of the bridge. Maryland represented four teams: CMIT North HS, CMIT South HS, Chesapeake Science Point, and our very own CMIT North MS. Three teams for every division emerged as winners, and they were awarded during the American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials (AASHTO) Spring Meeting.
The following are the testimonies of students about their experience and some pictures of the group.
“This whole school week we have been in Seattle Washington and competing for Nationals in a TRAC bridge competition. Although I do have to say it was a very surreal experience and there were a lot of firsts for me like my first time being on a plane and being out of Maryland. But honestly this trip was very fun and exciting, I got to learn more about my peers and see places I never once thought I could visit. Overall I would recommend the TRAC team to almost anyone who is willing to put in the work and effort like we did and look where it got us, we got 3rd place in nationals against many amazing teams!” -Angel Adesoji
“I thought that the trip was very eye-opening and refreshing. I got to travel around Seattle and it calmed me down before our TRAC competition which made me nervous. It helped me realize that just making it this far was enough. I got to see so many deep dark unseeable places and fall and trip all over the place. Overall I recommend the TRAC club since it might allow you to travel, compete, and meet new people.” - Chiezita Uzoukwu
“The trip to Seattle was a blast. I really enjoyed the trip, of course it involved a lot of hard work. Preparing for the presentation building the bridge qualifying. In all honesty, presenting in front of a large group of people can be terrifying, but as long as you practice it will be fine. And I think visiting a different state and visiting different places makes it worth it overall. I would recommend joining the track bridge club. Just know it's a lot of work, but as long as you're willing to work hard, I'm sure you can make it to and win. If you do plan to join, I recommend you use the programs provided it you it will take a lot less time if you already know how to do it and don't procrastinate and I'm sure you'll be fine I enjoyed my trip and the club if you join the club I'm sure you'll enjoy it too.” -Rony Quijada
“I think that it was a very fun and intriguing trip. First, the hotel was very nice and luxurious. I liked how there was a market inside of the hotel so you could get food whenever you wanted. The tour on Monday was also a great experience. We walked around the city, rode a monorail, ate at the armory (food court), and visited the "Chihuly Garden and Glass" art museum. The museum was beautiful and had some great views and glass art. We also visited the Space Needle. It had an awesome view of the city and revolving glass floor. The competition started on Tuesday. It was nice seeing everyones bridges and presentations. I learned a lot about the structure of the high school bridges tips on making them stronger. About an hour after the competition, the winners were announced. Out of the six teams in the 7-8th grade category, we came third and won $600. There was then a dinner for all of the contestants. Wednesday was just the flight back home. In total it was a very good experience and I would definitely do it again.” -David Chukwu
