Trident Leads
Term 3 Week 2 - 5th August 2022
PRINCIPAL'S MESSAGE
Education is so much more than what happens in the classroom and Trident is proud of its focus on Education Outside the Classroom and the co-curricular life of the school.
This has been particularly evident this week with the number of groups working beyond the classroom and experiencing a rich variety of educational, sporting and cultural experiences.
Two year ten groups of young scientists visited Moutohora and had fabulous days exploring the island and digging in the sand to find hot water; this is an excellent example of local context learning and we are grateful to the teachers who led the trip.
Glenn Barr, accompanied by our Student Support coordinator, Brendan Stevens, took a group of year ten boys to Wellington for five days. They visited Te Papa, Parliament, Massey University and the Maritime Museum amongst other highlights. For some students this was their first visit to the capital and for others the stop off the Desert Road was their first experience of snow. What an extraordinary opportunity to see more of Aotearoa.
Also this week we had the culmination of weeks of training for our Get2Go teams under the care and guidance of Helen Dobbin, Marc Camburn and Tracey Webster with the regional finals. The teams put in total commitment and effort, and although they missed out on a place in the National finals, we were really proud of their mahi and their team spirit. Our teachers and those in the wider community who supported them, are fabulous and we appreciate their time and dedication.
And of course - basketball, soccer, rugby and all our other co-curricular opportunities continued as normal. If your student is lucky enough to be coached, trained or supported in their co-curricular life, or took part in one of our EOTC opportunities this week, please take a moment to thank the teachers who give their own time to support our students personal growth and development in this way.
Today we were so sorry to say farewell to Mary Vosper who has been with the Science Department at Trident for the last two years. Mary is an excellent practitioner and an enthusiastic and caring teacher who has contributed so much to the school in her time here. Family reasons have meant that Mary must move to Hamilton and we wish her well in this next stage of her life and we will keep in touch and keep her connected to our Trident whanau, hoping one day she may be able to return. Huge thanks to Terry Gordon and Daralyn Hall who step into Science to support our students through this change.
Schools rely on the community and local businesses to enhance the environment and educational experiences for our students and building relationships in industry is a key part of this. We are extremely lucky that Dave Dobbin, our Engineering teacher, who originally came to us from industry, has developed a strong working relationship with Horizon Energy. Horizon works with the school to support our sustainability projects - these are projects which are student-led and help prepare our seniors for work in industry, allowing them to experience the satisfaction of seeing a project through from conception to product.
Tomorrow night we have the Trident Senior Ball for our Year Twelve and Thirteen students and the excitement today was palpable. We are really excited for them too as the ball is a key event in the school life of all our students. The theme for the ball is Hollywood and we are looking forward to seeing what the event planner has created for the special night. There are a lot of teachers attending to share the ball and see our students enjoying this rite of passage. Thank you to parents and whānau for making sure that students have safe plans for the night - that you know how students are arriving at the ball and how they are getting safely home at the end of the evening.
Finally, we are pleased to inform whānau that we have an interim School Nurse on site five days a week from Monday. Shirley Tickelpenny is an experienced school nurse with twenty years at Rotorua Girls High School in this role. Shirley has been a key part of our guidance team as our Kiawhina, responsible for our hauora interviews with junior and new students, for the last year and a half. Whilst we continue to advertise for a permanent registered nurse to join the team, Shirley has kindly stepped up to support our students in their medical health needs and she will be working with our visiting GP, Astrid de Jong.
Have a relaxing and rejuvenating weekend with whānau.
Ngā mihi nui,
Adrienne Scott-Jones

10BR WELLINGTON TRIP
Quincy Jones said "When I was growing up I wanted to be what I saw around me." The Wellington trip gave Mr Barr's Year 10 whānau ako class the opportunity to see and experience our capital city - from Parliament to our world famous Weta Workshops. For most of the group this was their first visit to Wellington and we know it will enrich their world view and how they see themselves in the world.
This trip has been nearly two years in the making and was an incentive for the class to meet and surpass their teachers expectations around attendance, engagement and working to embody our school's core values. We are proud of their efforts and pleased they were able to further build whanaungatanga.
We were lucky to receive impressive feedback from a member of the public who met the group in Wellington:
"I had the honour and privilege to witness a group of your students here in Wellington this week. Their behaviour was exemplary, they were kind, courteous and polite. Their two teachers were very approachable and great leaders. These boys and their teachers were great ambassadors for your school, well done."
Thank you to Mr Barr and Mr Stevens for taking the group to build memories that will stay with them for many years to come.
MOUTOHORA WHALE ISLAND SCIENCE TRIP
On Tuesday and Thursday this week the Science Department organised groups of yr 9 and some yr 10 students to visit Moutohora Whale Island. They learned about the history of the Island and its importance as a wildlife sanctuary today. They had a wonderful time. Thanks to Ms Nolan for organising the trips.
SERVICE ACADEMY SUCCESS
Earlier this week Rain McCauley and Lemarius Te Riini graduated from the Central Service Academy Advanced Leadership Course at Ohakea Air Base. The course is a follow on from the Basic Leadership Course held earlier in the year. Students were split into syndicate's and were given instruction and guidance on leadership and planning. The syndicate's planned and conducted a sports tournament, community action, leaderless tasks and a formal dinner.
Congratulations to you both. We look forward to you passing on your experiences and putting your new skills to use at Trident.
SMOKEFREE ROCKQUEST
We congratulate our rock band who made it through to the regional finals where Zealia Peretini, the bands drummer, picked up the prestigious Musicianship award.
