Shorewood Counseling Update
June 2020
Counselor Notes
Commitment to our students of color: Recent and painful events amplify how critical it is for schools to do better, and be better, especially for our black and brown students and families. Equity is a district and school stated priority, and the counseling department is committed to being part of impactful changes. Students: we are here to listen, to speak up as allies, and do the necessary work required to be part of the solution.
Take care of yourself! It is a valuable life-long skill to figure out what helps you feel rejuvenated and at peace. Try building these things into your daily routine - make them a priority. When we take care of ourselves, we are better able to deal with life. Just like how you would regularly charge a phone, you need daily doses of rejuvenation to be at your best, too!
Here are some recharge strategies we have heard from SW students: noticing nature, caring for a pet, taking deep breaths, helping others, getting exercise, taking naps, talking to a friend, and doing something creative. Experiment! Having your tool box of self-care strategies will help you throughout your life.
Gratitude: A "proven" self-care strategy is having a perspective of gratitude. It can be very calming and reassuring to notice the good things, and to give our minds a break from the tougher things going on.
On that note, we want to say thank you. There's nothing like "remote learning" to remind us of the best part of our job: working with students. You each are inspiring, unique and deserving of support. Protect yourself! Protect each other. We care about you.
Seniors
Congratulations!
Check SW's website and your k12 email for details and updates on end of the year senior activities. We look forward to celebrating you on June 15th & 16th for graduation, with social distancing guidelines in place.
We are so proud of you! It took a lot of hard work to get to this point. You each forged your own unique paths to get to high school graduation. Keep shining! We wish you all the best.
Diplomas & Final Transcripts
This year, diplomas will be mailed out after all details are finalized. This includes final grades from SW teachers, Running Start grades for some of you, and other remaining graduation requirements.

Consider Volunteering
This is a reminder that community service is a graduation requirement and is a great way to help our community. Volunteering also gives you experience and skills you can put on a resume, which will help you get a job in the future.
SW students are finding ways to get involved this summer, especially as shelter-in-place phases open up. If you find an opportunity, be sure to document your hours. Forms and information, as well as ideas for getting involved, are on Ms. Stephens' college and career center website.
