Shoreham School Family Newsletter
"You Belong Here"
January 14, 2024
Principal's Note
Dear Shoreham Family & Community,
Wow! It sure was a busy week here at SES. We appreciate your flexibility and support as we navigated an unexpected mechanical issue on Wednesday. (More on that below) I want to thank our faculty and staff for jumping in to help one another, and maintaining consistency and care for our students.
On Friday, your child's progress report came home. This is a snapshot of where they are in their educational progress. You will have a chance on Tuesday (or another day offered by the classroom teacher) to touch base about questions and wonderings related to your child's grades. If you would like to connect with a special area teacher- please reach out to them directly.
As a reminder- we do not have school on Monday (Martin Luther King Day) or Tuesday (Parent Conferences)
We will see everyone back on Wednesday morning! It will be a chilly week, so please send your child into school with all their outdoor gear.
Thank you!
Jenny
Further Explanation of Wednesday's Incident
This information is from Bruce MacIntire, ACSD's Facilities Director:
Here is a technical explanation of what led to the incident on Wednesday, January 10th.
At some point Tuesday evening or early Wednesday Morning the boiler for the building failed to come on. Eric Warren discovered the problem around 5:00 AM Wednesday and restarted the boiler. He stayed on site until the building began to warm up and things appeared to be working normally. Later that morning the boiler failed to start again. Eric returned and restarted the boiler. Sometime after lunch, the boiler began to misfire. the misfiring caused the boiler room to fill with exhaust from the boiler. The fumes and smoke permeated the building. As soon as Eric got a call from Jenny he went to the school to correct the problem. He called me on his way to Shoreham to let me know what was happening and to let me know he also called our service provider for the boiler system. Eric and the tech found the boiler misfiring and shut it off. They found the fuel nozzle was fouled and needed to be replaced.
Shoreham experienced the results of the malfunctioning boiler.
We had the system serviced in November on its normal schedule. The malfunction was not a result of inattention.
IAQ (indoor air quality) was poor at the time of the event. There was confusion about what was in the air and what our system measures.
CO carbon monoxide is an odorless tasteless gas that replaces the oxygen in the bloodstream and causes damage to the tissues throughout the body. It is created by burning fuel in a poorly ventilated area.
The CO levels taken by the fire department on Tuesday were zero.
CO2 Carbon dioxide is an odorless tasteless gas that displaces oxygen in the air. The primary source of CO2 in the school is respiration from the occupants.
The CO2 level in the school on Tuesday was between 400 and 800 ppm. Outdoor air in our region is normally 400 to 600 ppm. OSHA standards recommend not exceeding 5000 ppm for a continuous eight hours.
We have CO2 monitors on the thermostats in the building. normal reading range from 400 to 1500 ppm well below the 5000 ppm OSHA standard.
DMP diesel particulate matter is the exhaust that permeated the school on Wednesday It is an irritant and can inflame existing respiratory issues.
We opened windows and doors and used large fans to flush the fumes from the building.
We have set up monitors that measure particulate in the air in addition to the CO2 we already monitor. Since Wednesday evening, the IAQ was good. I reviewed the CO2 logs for the day and a few rooms peaked at 1100 ppm for a few minutes. 1100 ppm CO2 is a safe level and should not cause any illness.
Please reach out to Bruce MacIntire, Matthew Brankman or Jenny Urban with any questions or concerns.
Joyful Moments at SES this week
4th Graders published their narrative writing pieces. They have been working so hard to edit, revise and make their writing piece "pop" with the support of peers and teachers.
Mrs. Urban visited almost every classroom to revisit rules and expectations. Shoreham students were so excited to share what they want each part of our school to look like and sound like.
In Art, everyone made a concentric circles based on Kandinsky. We are putting them together to make a whole school art installation in the gym.
