Student Ownership with Technology
Tech Tip Tuesday (March 28, 2023)
No, this isn't easy.
Worksheets aren't cutting it.
To achieve genuine success in education, students must transcend the mere completion of assignments or comprehension of school material and take ownership of their learning. Those who take ownership of their education can effectively communicate what they are learning and the reasons behind it, elucidate their optimal learning methods, express when they encounter difficulties or require assistance, and comprehend their role in any academic environment. This implies granting all students the power, ability, and accountability to take charge of their learning.
1
Teacher: The teacher directs learning for the majority of the lesson
Students: Evidence of student engagement via exit ticket or formative assessment
Example: Teacher leads a traditional lesson while students take notes and complete some form of accountability.
2
Teacher: The teacher shifts to facilitating learning
Students: Students begin to shift from student engagement to student ownership of learning
Example: Teacher works to retrieve banked knowledge, and students begin to question where they can go next.
3
Teacher: Teacher and students cofacilitate learning with an exchange of ideas and strategies
Students: Students take ownership of their learning and show mastery via their own presentation of learning
Example: Students begin and complete showing how they know what they have learned, either from teacher or through own inquiry.
Before you say your students can't handle it,
think if YOU can do it!
