Findley Dragon Fledglings
Kindy's waiting to become Dragons
June 17, 2020
Dear Future Kindergarten Parents/Guardians,
This spring has really tested our resilience, our perseverance and our commitment to the health and well-being of all members of our society. Beyond the pandemic we are living through, events happening around our country due to the death of George Floyd are causing each and every one of us to look deep inside and ask what we can do, as individuals and as community members. As a school leader, I am making the commitment to take time this summer to reflect and ask what actions I might take to ensure our school is a safe, welcoming, and affirming place for all our students. We must hope and believe that we will come out on the other side stronger and better for it, especially as it relates to efforts made towards anti-racism and social justice.
There are many ways to engage in the work of being an advocate for social justice. One way I personally believe to be important is to begin having conversations with our kids about race, and more specifically, racism. Below are some resources you may find helpful in this endeavor. We are all learning and growing in our understanding of how best to talk to our children/students about racism and white privilege. While it won’t always be comfortable, it will challenge us and help us all to grow in our current understanding. Hopefully we can and will create some real and lasting change for future generations.
Findley school is a place that honors and celebrates its diversity. Although we can do better, and will do better, the community of adults here value inclusivity, diversity and a global perspective that encourages action in order to make our world a better place. For those of you who will be new to our Findley community, we welcome you on this journey and we look forward to partnering with you and your child(ren).
Continue to be on the lookout for important updates from us, as well as information that comes out directly from Beaverton School District. There is still much unknown about what school will look like in the fall and we aim to keep you abreast of information as it unfolds.
Stay safe and well.
Sincerely,
Sherry Marsh, Ed.D.
Principal, Findley Elementary

2020 BSD Parent Survey -- Return to School
As we move into summer, much uncertainty remains. The Oregon Department of Education released its guidance for the next school year “Ready Schools, Safe Learners” last week and BSD is gathering input from parents as a part in preparing for our return to school plans in the fall. Parents may submit their input on the 2020 BSD Parent Survey -- Return to School between now and June 30th.
The Parent Survey is for everyone who will have a child in the Beaverton School District in September. We would like to know your thoughts about school opening in September.
This survey is voluntary. You may opt-out of completing the survey at any time. All survey data will be summarized so that each person who answers will remain anonymous. Nothing in the survey or District software will be used to identify you.
It is OK to go back and change your answer to a previous question, but you must finish the survey in one sitting.
Thanks in advance for participating in the Parent Survey!
Social Emotional Learning at Findley
3...2...1...LAUNCH!
Dear Findley Families,
We’re excited to let you know that our Findley Social Emotional Learning (SEL) website has launched! Our site contains information and research around the topic of SEL and what we’re doing at Findley to help all our students grow socially and emotionally. There are activities & resources you can use at home and even tips for adult self-care. We’ve also included a page on SEL for Summer that provides activities that would make a great addition to what you may already have planned for your family this summer. In addition, all our remote learning lessons and parent partnership presentations are available on the website too.
The webpage can be found by clicking here OR you can go to the Findley Website, click Academics then Social Emotional Learning.
As the 2019-2020 school year comes to a close and summer break begins please know that we are as committed as ever to your child’s social & emotional wellbeing and look forward to partnering with you in the coming school year.

Summer Reading at the Cedar Mill Community Library
The summer reading program at the Cedar Mill and Bethany Community Libraries will happen this year! It has been re-imagined to fit this new world. Summer Reading still runs June 1- August 31. No registration is required. Simply read or listen to any books.
Reading records may be downloaded from our website : library.cedarmill.org/summer-reading
Kids are invited to use the reading record provided or create their own. Families can also find a scavenger hunt, daily tips for motivating kids to read, and a schedule of online programs.
We have created this video in hopes of getting kids excited about joining the summer reading fun https://youtu.be/qM10nQiiUfI
Thank you for sharing this with your families and staff.
We will offer storytimes and performers online through our Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/CedarMillLibraries/
A schedule may be found on the website listed above.
As we currently do not have a safe way of distributing summer reading finisher prize books and other prizes they will not be available this year.
We have created videos of our Youth Librarians reading stories that appeal to older kids at the request of teachers. They may be found here Ihttps://www.youtube.com/user/CedarMillLibrary/playlists The Read Aloud Playlist contains this content.
