GOODNOE GAZETTE
September 9, 2022
It was great to see so many families at the Back to School Picnic last evening! Thank you to the GES PTO for hosting this fun event! Featured in this week's newsletter are some of our specialist teachers. Be sure to take a look!
Thank you for your continued patience as the district navigates bus delays and cancellations. Please contact the Transportation Call Center to address your concerns at 215-944-1010. Transportation as well as Administration is aware of these problems and working hard to resolve these issues. I am hopeful that these concerns will be resolved very soon. If you receive notification of a bus cancellation prior to dismissal and you want to pick up your child; please contact the Main Office or your child's teacher to ensure that your child is dismissed with our car riders.
This is a friendly reminder that toys or sport equipment from home are not permitted to be brought to school. Past experiences with damaged or lost items have informed us that it is best for these items to remain at home. I appreciate your understanding and support to reinforce this message. Additionally, please refer to the Dress and Grooming section of the Parent-Student Handbook to ensure school appropriate dress. Also note, hats are not permitted to be worn in school. In advance, thank you for supporting these expectations.
Have a great weekend!
Beth

Reading Tidbits & Tips
We wanted to share that we are piloting 3 new ELA programs here at Goodnoe Elementary. Our Kindergarten and 1st grades are piloting Reading Horizons for the phonics component of ELA instruction. Second grade teachers and the 4th grade team are piloting My View and the 3rd grade team is piloting Wonders. As we look ahead to choosing a new, robust Language Arts program, using these materials with their students is the most effective way to evaluate the programs to determine whether they are a good fit and match to best meet the future needs of our students. Our goal is always to develop proficient readers and writers with strong critical thinking skills.
Please don’t hesitate to reach out with any questions that you may have.

Chorus for 5th & 6th Graders
We are excited to continue to offer Chorus at Goodnoe Elementary! All students in 5th and 6th grade are invited to participate. Members should attend one rehearsal a week (either Monday or Friday). Families may choose the day that fits best with their schedule. If you are interested in signing up for chorus, please fill out this Google Form: https://forms.gle/ry16jxFc9vxqKFYj7
Once you are signed up, I will email important information and dates. Chorus will begin on Friday, September 30th so please sign up before that date.

Thank you and have a wonderful day!

The STEAM Lab is up and running in F9!
Students in grades 1-6 have been enjoying introductory lessons and discussions about what the STEAM special is. They are learning that it is OK to try challenging things, to make mistakes, and to work together to solve problems. Mrs. Molishus and Mr. Schmoyer want students to ask lots of questions as they explore this new and exciting special.
STUDENTS LOVE THE STEAM LAB!
Library News
I am so excited to be back at Goodnoe as your children’s librarian again this year! It was so wonderful to see students excited about borrowing books from the library. Their book joy was contagious! Please remind your children to keep their books in a safe place at home and return them on their library day each week. A reminder on your phone works well for this.
Kids need lots of books! Please have a quick chat with your younger children about an appropriate amount of books you would like them to take out from the library (1-10). It may then be helpful to bring a tote bag on library day:) I look forward to an amazing library year with your children. Please don’t hesitate to reach out if you have any questions.
Sincerely,
Kris Topley
Librarian

School Counselor's Corner
The beginning of the school year can be stressful and busy. Both children and parents need to get used to new routines not just in school, but also navigating the challenges of busy after school activities. When life seems overwhelming try to take a mindful moment. Here are a few ideas to try:
Take three long, deep, nourishing breaths—breathing in through your nose and out through your mouth. Then let your breath settle into its own rhythm, as you simply follow it in and out, noticing the rise and fall of your chest and belly as you breathe. This will help relax your body. This can also be helpful at bedtime if you or your child is having difficulty falling asleep.
Ground yourself by using all of your senses:
5: Acknowledge FIVE things you see around you.
4: Acknowledge FOUR things you can touch around you
3: Acknowledge THREE things you hear.
2: Acknowledge TWO things you can smell.
1: Acknowledge ONE thing you can taste.
Next time you find your mind racing with stress, try the acronym S.T.O.P.:
S – Stop what you are doing, put things down for a minute.
T – Take a breath.
O – Observe your thoughts, feelings, and emotions.
P – Proceed with something that will support you in the moment.
When we can manage our own stress, we can model for our children how to handle stress in a healthy way.
