Happy Mother's Day
We wanted to share our appreciation for the moms of our Shorian Nation. We hope you're celebrated on Mother's Day with an overwhelming amount of love. We realize how much you do to keep our students day-to-day lives running so smoothly.
Our Shorian moms serve as volunteers at extracurriculars, are chauffeurs to and from school, are emotional support for a game loss, are teachers to assist our students with homework, and are a cheerleader of it all. Mothers are the makers and keepers of fond memories. Thank you for everything!

Grease, the Musical
An eight-year run on Broadway and two subsequent revivals, along with innumerable school and community productions place Grease among the world's most popular musicals. Save the date for Lake Shore High School's production of Grease taking place May 16-18th!
Purchase your tickets for $12 online ($15 at the door) here.
Here is Rydell High's senior class of 1959: duck-tailed, hot-rodding "Burger Palace Boys" and their gum-snapping, hip-shaking "Pink Ladies" in bobby sox and pedal pushers, evoking the look and sound of the 1950s in this rollicking musical. Head "greaser" Danny Zuko and new (good) girl Sandy Dumbrowski try to relive the high romance of their "Summer Nights" as the rest of the gang sings and dances its way through such songs as "Greased Lightnin'," "It's Raining on Prom Night," "Alone at the Drive-In Movie" recalling the music of Buddy Holly, Little Richard, and Elvis Presley that became the soundtrack of a generation.

Care Solace
While Teacher Appreciation Week falls in May, every day is a chance to recognize the incredible impact school staff has on our children's lives. Teachers, counselors, administrators, and everyone in between dedicate themselves to fostering a safe and nurturing environment where students can learn and thrive. Their tireless efforts inspire curiosity, build character, and shape the future of our communities.
Beyond academics, school staff play a crucial role in our children's emotional well-being. They often serve as confidantes, mentors, and advocates, offering support and guidance through challenging times. The pressure to meet student needs while managing demanding schedules can take its toll. Let's remember to extend our gratitude to all school staff for their unwavering dedication and commitment to our children's success.
The stress of school life can affect everyone – students, families, and staff alike. Care Solace is here to support the entire school community. Our comprehensive database connects individuals with mental health professionals who can provide culturally competent care, ensuring everyone has access to the resources they need. ENTHUSIASM
People with this character strength approach life with excitement and energy. They energize people around you.
Happy birthday, Lake Shore!
We're proud--proud of our past and prospects of our future.
Since the beginnings of Michigan public education in the 1840s, local students wishing to attend high school had to travel to Mount Clemens or Detroit, or beyond. The need for that ended at the school board meeting on July 14, 1919, when approval was given for the start of secondary education in this district. That September, “junior high” began being offered in the Lake Shore school house.
Another grade was added each year thereafter—9th grade in 1920, 10th in ’21, 11th in ’22, and finally, 12th grade in school year 1923-24. Thus, June 26, 1924 marked the date of the first graduation ceremony at Lake Shore High School. The class was comprised of three students, two boys and a girl: T. Jay Barton, Nelda Egle, and Clifford Frazo.
The Class of 2023-24 marked the 100th anniversary of K-12 education in our district. In 1 month, the 100th year will tick to the 101st and the celebration of all that is Lake Shore will continue.
For 100 years we've had an unwavering belief in education routed in moments in time that share our inspiration, innovation, and celebration. The Shorian Nation believes in the transformative power of education for all students.
Cheers to 100 Years, Lake Shore! Once a Shorian, Always a Shorian!
Send us your favorite photo of a memory from the past 100 years to social@lsps.org. Was it a game-winning basket, your commencement ceremony, a group photo with your best friends? We'd love to share these moments!
LEADERSHIP
People with the character strength of leadership value each member of their group and inspire people to do their best.
In celebration of our employees during Employee Appreciation Week, which ran from May 6th-10th, we recognized our Lake Shore staff who go the extra mile and celebrated the people who keep Lake Shore running. You've been our comfort and joy for the past 100 years. Thank you for being part of our legacy.
Superintendent Dr. DiPonio said, "I've had the opportunity to work with some amazing educators in my career, but there is a special place in my heart my colleagues and friends at Lake Shore. Makers of miracles everyday, I feel blessed to work alongside and witness the culture of kindness, passion, and devotion each of you have for kids of this community. Words cannot describe the depth of appreciation, respect, and admiration I have for you, my fellow Shorians."
Looking forward, we are excited to celebrate Friendship (5/13-5/17) and Outro Week (5/20-24).
Inspiration
Carnation Deliveries
We love our Lake Shore teachers and demonstrate this care with the power of a flower.
Since 2016, Seniors walked through all buildings at Lake Shore Public Schools, showcasing their incredible accomplishments to their underclassmen peers. Seniors felt the love from parents, cousins, younger siblings, friends, teachers, and strangers. These locations were their old stomping grounds. They always will be.
In 2019, Seniors were given red and white carnations to pass on to a staff member who made an impact on them while attending Lake Shore Public Schools. These students are already moving mountains, but allowing them to thank those that are responsible cements a lifelong relationship.
This year, we continued the tradition of demonstrating gratitude for our staff during Employee Appreciation Week with our clap outs and flower presentations from all 5th graders, 8th graders, and 12th graders.
Fifth graders Tyler Dunaway and Adeline Jones selected Mrs. Kiefer and Mrs. Ventimeglia
at Rodgers Elementary. Tyler's been part of Drama Club for 3 years in the roles of Sebastian, Kristoff, and Aladdin. Mrs. Kiefer has been his Drama Club advisor and, in his words, "always helps and is positive." Adeline was Mrs. V's 4th grade student and she remembers how supportive this 2024 Teacher of the Year has been when she felt like giving up on her work.
That's not all. Kindergarten teacher Erin O'Shee received a flower from her 5th grade helper, David. She was in tears when she shared how special it was to be chosen by him and another young lady who she remembered by combing a knot out of her hair.
Choosing just one staff member from their building who they felt the deepest connection with was tough. We are excited to learn who our Lake Shore High School Seniors will give their carnation to during their Senior Walk on May 31st!
Bonus: We love the new VIP Teacher of the Year parking spots which will be completed on Saturday! All spots are also great to park for our Car Show Fundraiser on May 18th from 10am-2pm hosted by North Lake High School and our Lake Shore Early Childhood Center.

Innovation
Secondary Open Houses
Everyone at Lake Shore knows that the best part of Lake Shore is the people. May 1st was Principals' Day and in October it was Principals' Month: https://www.facebook.com/myLSPS/posts/pfbid02r4VPPyehzSqvnXA2tmR7SJAiS1wfVnCY2BCYQAFTLaToCDrgFTAwxcrVcWiamaDxl. The camaraderie of the Shorian Nation is built on strong relationships and #OtherPeopleMatter.
At morning dropoff, Rodgers Elementary staff greeted Principal Baalaer by wearing his face on shirts and blasting Simply the Best, the 1989 hit song from Tina Turner. Administrators from Lake Shore High School were gifted festive shirts with their own faces. These are small reminders of the enormous impact they make each and every day.
At our High School and Middle School Open House Experiences last night, incoming 5th and 9th graders and potential new students were given a chance to see what we have to offer. These students were greeted with Shorian Pride from these superhuman principals at the secondary level.
At our High School and Middle School Open House Experiences, incoming 5th and 9th graders and potential new students were given a chance to see what we have to offer.
We are lucky to have our Shorians. Let's take a look at Lake Shore High School through the lens of Senior Tia Dixon.
LSHS/KMS Courses: https://lshs.lakeshoreschools.org/for.../course_selection... and https://kennedy.lakeshoreschools.org/
During her four years here at Lake Shore, she has come to enjoy many things about the school. Starting with academics, Lake Shore High School offers a wide variety of classes, both regular and advanced placement. Some of her favorite classes has been Anatomy and Physiology and Yearbook. She added, "Another great thing about Lake Shore is the fact that we have Dual Enrollment and Early College of Macomb classes. Early College of Macomb students are able to enter the program their junior year and complete it in three years and receive an associate's degree which is an amazing way to get a headstart to your future. Personally, I have taken dual enrollment classes and that allows me to earn college credits while in high school similar to the ECM program just without the commitment."
LSHS/KMS Athletics: https://shoriansports.com/
Tia reminded us that sports are open to all ages and grades. She said, "In the fall we have boys’ soccer, cross country, football, girls' swimming, sideline cheer, and volleyball. Next, in the Winter, we have girls' and boys' basketball, girls' and boys' bowling, boys’ swimming, competitive cheer, boys' and girls' hockey, poms, and wrestling. Lastly, in the spring we offer baseball, boys’ golf, girls' soccer, boys' and girls' lacrosse, softball, and track and field."

Tia shared her involvement in our great selection of after-school clubs. She wrote, "A few of my favorites are Book Club and NHS. In book club, we meet every other Monday and select a diverse range of books covering different genres, cultures, and periods. Starting book club has been a great achievement of mine and starting a club can be done by anyone as long as you have a school sponsor. NHS is also great because it has offered many volunteer opportunities which look great on college applications."

And remember, Shorian Pride is more than a sticker. It is the feeling of unity, displayed by deep, long-lasting relationships in a family environment. It is when you find yourself calling Lake Shore your home and referring to your classmates as siblings.
Our student body displays their spirit in a variety of ways. At Lake Shore High School, our student body is referred to as the Shipyard, spectators who support our athletic teams. Students wear the traditional red and white gear to share their love for Lake Shore. Students may choose from several extracurricular club options and meet well after the last bell, because of their sheer dedication.
In what ways have you been able to stick your pride for school everywhere and leave a permanent mark? Once a Shorian, always a Shorian.
24th Annual Talent Show
We were entertained by 28 acts from Violet Elementary's 24th Annual Talent Show. To view our Talent Show program, visit https://docs.google.com/.../1AT5c4cdj6c93ahcBh0Zd.../edit...
We were so impressed with Masters of Ceremony team of Kamryn Corona and Emma Sanchez and the performances which included a variety of talent. From singing and dancing to comedy and tumbling, we enjoyed watching all of the performers shine.
From Amelia Chalkey's tap dance to You Make My Dreams Come True and Cameron Kuzniar's Pogo Stick routine to Jump to Parker Thompson's Comedy Act and Hannah and Jonah Fish singing When Can I See You Again, every act was spectacular!
Fifth grader Zoey Brocker from Mrs. Husek's class has been dancing for 10 years; She decided to brave the auditions and has been part of the show since Kindergarten. She said, "I have came a long way. I enjoy doing this because it puts a smile on people's faces and I love performing for my friends and family. Bringing joy and happiness is the best."
Your showcase of skills made us smile; We do not consider you amateurs. Your talents are impressive and the only thing that is even more inspiring may be your display of character strengths. We appreciate both who you are and aptitude for your special abilities.
Thank you to Mrs. Pecoraro and our backstage crew consisting of Frankie Beaver, Paisley Gordon, Kevin Hunt ll, Harper Miller, Davina Parker, Hayden Rent, and Isla Rent for making this event a success.
Celebration
School Lunch Hero Day
When we say school nutrition professionals are heroes, we mean it! Thank you to each person responsible for providing lunches (and food) to millions of children across America, but especially our Lake Shore Public Schools employees.
Tina Morris, Food Service Director, said, “Happy National Lunch Hero Day to our amazing team of women who feed our district day in and day out! Thank you for making a difference with what you do everyday with a smile, fun, kind gestures and caring ways! We are better because of you!”
MEALS-TO-DATE SERVED STATISTICS
- Breakfast: 71,003
- Lunch: 232,457
Bonus: Lunch is even better with cookies and entrepreneur twins Laiyah and Logan Simpson from Violet Elementary have started their own sweet business. As 3rd graders, they are proud of The Bomb Cookies! Their favorites? Peanut Buttercup Goodness and Oreo Madness. They've warned that their cookies may cause uncontrollable cookie cravings, but we encourage you to indulge.
Double Bonus: Located in the hallway at Masonic Heights Elementary were descriptions of how students are all "Smart Cookies" in their own way. After reading the story The Smart Cookie, students discussed the different ways they are smart.
Nap Party
Naps are their happy place and a much-needed life pause at the Lake Shore Early Childhood Center.
Of course, a little party never hurt anyone.
Megan Messina recently finished her Student Teaching placement for Mrs. Schornak's MiCI students at Violet Elementary. The entire class celebrated Ms. Messina with custom shirts, flowers, and love. Schornak said, "She is a calm, loving, and supportive presence for all students. Megan has met students where they are at and has helped them rise to their highest potential."
Her graduation ceremony takes place on May 4th from Central Michigan University with a goal of becoming a Special Education teacher. In the meantime, she has already begun subbing for LSPS.
Schornak continued with a proud Facebook post, "My first student teacher, Megan Messina gets to fly solo! I’ll truly miss our team teaching we had going on and it’s been such a pleasure to teach someone who is more than ready, capable, and competent to lead on her own. Here’s to hoping we get to keep her as the Violet All Star she truly is! You’re on your own kid."
Macomb Business Award
Lake Shore Public Schools was nominated for a Macomb Business Award in the Best Place to Work category: https://www.macombgov.org/.../macomb-business-awards...
This event recognizes organizations that are striving to build their workforce, expand market share, be good neighbors, embrace diversity or start a business.
We appreciate our Shorian Nation who believes our organization goes above and beyond to provide an exceptional education in a safe and nurturing environment. Our 3,339 students are empowered to excel in an evolving global society, supported by the collaborative effort of staff, families, and community.
These powerful words were written in the nomination: "Recognizing that helping others kindles happiness and mental health at an increase of 9%, Lake Shore Public Schools has intentionally cultivated a focus on humanitarian efforts. Lake Shore is the best place to work AND learn because of the Other People Matter philosophy."
One employee wrote, "I recently found out that I am sick and will need to take an extended leave of absence. Everyone who knows has reached out to me to make sure that I am ok and to offer help in any way they can. When people say that Lake Shore is a family, that's what they mean. Superintendent, Joe DiPonio, has fostered an atmosphere of human relations and well-being FIRST for all students and staff."
This year's 12th annual Macomb County Business Awards were presented at Andiamo in Warren with the goal of celebrating businesses in Macomb County, and share “best practices” with others.
National Decision Day
Lake Shore High School celebrated National Decision Day! Lake Shore High School Seniors are ready to make a commitment by finding a post-secondary option that fits.
LSHS's inaugural Decision Day event was a fantastic celebration of the achievements and future plans of our graduating seniors and included a welcome message from College Adviser Ms. Tanski, Declaration of Decision & Banner Signing by Seniors, Letters to Future Seniors, Giveaway Ticket Distribution, Senior Survey, and a Pizza Party Celebration!
During the Declaration of Decision segment, every senior had the opportunity to announce their post-LSHS plans to their peers. Following this, they will walk across the stage to sign the 2024 Decision Day Banner, which will be prominently displayed at the school until graduation.
Follow their decisions on Instagram at https://www.instagram.com/shoriandecision2024.
