Hayes Highlights
January 2024
Principal's Place
Hello Tower and welcome to 2024!
We are looking forward to our winter events here at Hayes! Save the date, February 29th, 5 - 6:30 PM for Books and Bingo Night here at school!
January and early February we will be completing our mid-year academic screening (testing). This data we collect, allows for us to individualize instruction to best meet the needs of each of our scholars. We do this through differentiation of core instruction, intervention for academic support and enrichment activities in the classroom. We look forward to sharing this information we gather during our winter conferences.
A look ahead...

Classroom Connection
Crack the code
Throughout December, students in all grades celebrated the Hour of Code by learning introductory computer science skills. During media and STEAM lab they used Beebots, Dash robots, Osmo apps, and Code.org to try out different coding tools.
Working hard
Hayes EL students team up to write short and long sentences that describe photos.
Our EL teachers share these goals — to prepare students to speak English as quickly and proficiently as possible. The objective is so students can not only excel in academics, but they can also partake in social activities and have the ability to communicate with their peers and teachers.

For Our Safety
For the safety of all our scholars and Tower, we ask that these procedures be maintained by all when visiting our school:
- Any time any adult or child is visiting our campus, please have a photo ID and check in at our front office to sign in and receive a visitor badge
- Our front lot outside is a bus only lot each morning and afternoon from 8:55 AM - 9:10 AM and 3:25 PM - 4:05 PM. Please drive slow and safe through all our school lots at all times for the safety of our scholars, families and staff.
- If you wish to pick up your child early, please notify our office by 2:00 PM. A valid picture ID is required.
- To avoid learning disruption for all classrooms as well as excessive absences, please minimize early dismissals whenever possible.
- Please note, teachers are teaching during school hours. If you would like to speak to your child's teacher, phoning or emailing is the best route for communication during our school day.
- Our school day starts at 9:10 AM, DROP OFF BEGINS AT 8:55 AM, no earlier for the safety of our scholars. Our school day ends at 3:45 PM. Please note these times as we do not have staffing outside of these hours.
Winter Gear is Important
Notes from Nutrition
Hello from Fridley Food Service
Thank you to everyone who has eaten meals with us. We look forward to seeing our students in the lunch line daily. We continue to provide some different meal entrees including Asian Noodle Bowls, Beef Sambusa, Chipotle Style Burrito Bowl, and School Made Mac & Cheese. All students must take at least ½ cup fruit or vegetable with their meal. Did you also know that you can come an eat school lunch with your student? The cost is $5.00 and includes the lunch entree, milk, fruits and vegetables. This is a great value, and you can taste what we are serving our customers. Reminder that students cannot just have a free milk if they are bringing a cold lunch from home, all students must take a reimbursable meal so if your student wants just a milk, we will also have them take fruits and vegetables along with the milk.
In January we will be providing some new fruits and vegetables for students to try as part of the Fresh Fruit and Vegetable program (snack served in the classroom). On January 11 we will be serving papaya, January 18th star fruit and on January 31 Romanesco. Please ask your children about these items and what they tasted like.

State Statute Requires Schools to Provide Menstrual Products to Students in Grades 4-12
In response to legislation passed by Minnesota lawmakers last spring, Fridley Public Schools will make menstrual products available to students in grades 4 through grade 12. The products, limited to menstrual pads, will be available in dispensers at no cost to students and will be located in restrooms regularly used by students in these grades. The legislation requires that these products be available to students by January 1, 2024.
Research has shown that one in four teens missed class due to a lack of menstrual products, and this legislation is aimed at removing the barrier of limited access to menstrual products for students. Staff have installed product dispensers and waste receptacles. If you have any questions about the availability of these products, please contact your school's health office or building principal.
