News from Ms. Moss!
Greetings from the Lilja Library
How lovely it was to see so many of you at our recent open house! Thank you for stopping in to say hello!
We’ve had a very busy start to the school year with some big changes in the library so older students may report that things are looking a little different this year. Most notably, I am joined by Ms. Bridget Hoarty, our new library paraprofessional, and I couldn’t be more excited to welcome her into the library and to Lilja School. We currently share her with Johnson School library for one day per week (Wednesdays) but most students have at least had a chance to meet and work with her.
So far this year we’ve been busy getting to know one another with read-alouds centered around welcoming, name pronunciation, and nick- names. Some first graders even worked with their folks at home and did a little research to find out what “cool” nicknames they have, that they might not even know about!
We’ve been reviewing expectations in the library, and discussing book care, setting the stage for circulation. And all students have been exploring (and re-exploring the library) to find new or tried-and-true books. Since book checkout began mid September you might be wondering about the sheer volume of books students are bringing home. There is now a new circulation maximum, so your 1st - 4th grade students may check out two books per visit and have up to six books at home at any given time. Please work with them to establish routines for reading, storing, and returning library books in a responsible way. Kindergarteners have already begun checking out books and are practicing selecting books to read in the classroom and return the following week, in order to check out a new book. They will do this ”practice checkout” for several more weeks and then may take them home, probably by the end of October.
K-4 we have been exploring various library neighborhoods (Picture Books, Fiction Series, Graphic Novels, and Nonfiction.) All students from 1st through 4th grade have been choosing and scanning out their own books. They love to do this and are quite good at it (with just a little help from Ms. Hoarty and myself!) First and second graders have been reviewing parts of a book. Third and 4th graders have really enjoyed scavenger hunts in the library to build independent library skills.
We recently celebrated National Hispanic Heritage Month with read-alouds and kindergarteners even made a little joyful noise, thanks to Mr. Roper’s generous loan of percussion instruments that matched those in our Epic Read-aloud, Drum Dream Girl.
Happy Fall everyone, and Happy Reading! 🧡Ms. Moss

The Lilja PTO is a group of volunteer parents. Our goals are to enrich the education of our children, support the teachers and staff, and serve the Lilja community as a whole. We fundraise to supply materials, fund programs, organize social functions, and coordinate parent volunteers, all of which enhance the experience of Lilja students and build a sense of community within the school.
We need your help! Please reach out to the PTO at pto@liljapto.org to volunteer! We are looking for people willing to head some of our events throughout the year (Trunk or Treat, the Lilja Carnival, etc). These events are much beloved, and have a foundation already in place. All we need is YOU to make it happen! We look forward to hearing from you soon!
