February 2024
7th and 8th grade students in the Guitar II elective class perform for their peers at the January Leader of the Pack Assembly. They also performed at the Kinder - 5th grade Assembly later that day. Most students began learning guitar this fall as part of the 7th and 8th grade elective class structure that is new this year. Students choose a specialized, 5 week course in music, art, PE and social emotional learning (SEL). Ms. Swanson, Ms. Finch, Mr. Ragukonis and Ms. Bemak have demonstrated such creativity and attention to student interest in planning their courses!

The Book Fair is Coming!
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school. Here’s what you need to know about the big event, which will take place on Wednesday, February 14th and Thursday, February 15th during parent teacher conferences. The Book Fair will be in the library.
Say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! You can choose to share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy. If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping: https://www.scholastic.com/bf/trailsideacademy.
It takes our whole Crew - including families - to run the Book Fair! We are looking for volunteers to help set up, run the cash register, and take down the fair. If you are interested and able to help, please email TrailsideOffice@mapleton.us.
Trailside Movie Night was a blast! Thank you to everyone who came and supported this event. We had so much fun, enjoyed the short movies and learned that next year, we need to order more pizza! We are so fortunate to have such a strong and supportive Crew.

Trailside Spelling Bee Finalists!
Trailside Spelling Bee Update
On Thursday, February 1st, Trailside hosted our annual spelling bee! Open to students in grades 4-8, students first qualified by performing well on a written exam. The top spellers from each class in the written bee then competed in the oral spelling bee. Congratulations to Kaiyah B., in 7th grade, on her 1st place finish! The top seven Trailside spellers will represent our school at the Mapleton Spelling Bee on February 5th and 7th.
- 1st Place - Kaiyah B. (7th)
- 2nd Place - Dani G. (8th)
- 3rd Place - Yulianna M. (6th)
- 4th Place - Juan S.J. (5th) and Izzy S. (6th)
- 6th Place - Luthian M. (5th)
- 7th Place - Liliana E. (8th)
A special honorable mention goes out to Carolina R.H. (7th). She and Liliana E. spelled many, many words to see who the 7th place finalist would be. Carolina demonstrated perseverance, poise and sportsmanship during the Bee. We are proud of her and all the finalists for their hard work and dedication! Good luck at the District Bee!
Thank you to Ms. Bemak for coordinating the Trailside Bee and serving as a judge, as well as to Ms. Bergh and Ms. Halo for serving as judges. Thank you also to all the families who came to support the spellers!
Travel the World with Trailside!
Join us on Friday, February 23rd from 5:00 - 7:00pm for a celebration of our school's many cultures. This year we will be featuring Trailside student work, Mapelton's own Mariachi band, a Japanese Dragon Performance, Venezuelan cuisine and most importantly food and display booths representing our amazing diverse community at Trailside!
You should have received a paper sign up sheet to get involved and participate in a number of ways. If you are interested in hosting a display table or bringing food in celebration of your family's culture, please fill out the form and return it to school by February 9th. If you need an extra copy, please email TrailsideOffice@mapleton.us as we have more available! Once we receive your form, someone from the amazing PIE team will reach out to you directly with more specific participation information.
Another way you can get involved is by volunteering to help support this event. We need our whole community Crew to make these events a success! Sign up to help here using PIE's 2024 Multicultural Night sign up genius.
We look forward to celebrating our amazing community with a night of food, fun, performances and joy! Thank you for being a part of our Trailside family.
Scenes from the Kindergarten Weather Expo last week! After studying the weather and how we respond to it, kindergarteners wrote their own weather stories modeled after the classic The Snowy Day, by Ezra Jack Keats. Thank you to all the families who came to listen to our authors read their stories!
8th Grade Families - Save the Date!
We will honor our 8th grade students with a Continuation Ceremony on Wednesday, May 29th at 1:30pm.
