JANUARY 17, 2024 - NEWSLETTER
SLPHS families,
I am hoping to walk my dog again by the end of the week. While he is usually really excited to go for walks, the last few days he has been reluctant to go beyond our yard. Hopefully, like in my house, the weather is providing for some quality family time for you . . . indoors!
Registration for 2024-2025
Course registration for the 2024-2025 school year is now open. We will have grade level several specific online course registration information sessions for families – starting with 11th grade this week. Our goal is to support you and your student through the course selection process. I encourage families to spend some time talking about goals and plans and learning more about course offerings.
We have more than 50 courses next year that provided students an opportunity to earn college credit. Students can access career and college pathways courses for exploring interests….co-created courses where students design their learning with a teacher. There are so many options students have to explore courses that inform and guide their plans beyond high school.
Find everything you need to explore and get support on the registration hub: SpringLakeParkSchools.org/HSRegistration.
Competency-based learning
You may have heard that we have a handful of teachers at the high school piloting some work with competency-based learning in some specific courses. In these courses, teachers are using rubrics with students. Rubrics are tools that describe the learning objectives and outcomes. The goal is for students to really think about and engage in their learning to be able to apply – or demonstrate - what they know and can do. This approach should provide more information than ever to students and parents about learning and progress within the specific course.
In these pilot courses – and all courses at the high school - letter grades continue to be in place. Students can continue to track percentages and points and will get a grade this year and in the future. There is no plan to abandon grades. Somehow that rumor has been out in our community and that is not the case. Teachers are seeing a lot of value in this approach as providing points and percentages alone doesn’t often tell us enough about what kids actually know and can do. In addition, in the future, competency-based learning could provide students with greater flexibility in how they achieve course credits and demonstrate learning.
If you haven't heard much about competency-based learning, I hope you take a moment to browse some brief, basic information on the competency-based learning component of personalized learning. If you have questions about this related to a course your child is taking, please reach out to the teacher or contact our office. We’re happy to talk.
Thank you as always for your on-going partnership and support. One school, one community #SLPPantherProud!

Showing up to school every day has been proven to keep children healthier, help to develop life skills and independence, and promote community. Each month, we will be sharing a reason why it is important for your child to be in school, including tips for how to promote attendance.
Develop Life Skills
Going to school regularly helps students develop important life skills. Effective communication, decision-making and time management are all skills that are taught from an early age. These skills are honed as students make their way through SLP Schools and beyond. In fact, these lessons are carried through all the way to our Transitions Program! Transitions student Sam Alkhulaidi states, "I'm learning to grow vegetables in my backyard garden.” Sam is looking forward to the spring thaw so he can put his new skills he learned from school to use.
School Health Screen Magnets
As we continue to navigate cold and flu season, we would like to remind families of our attendance policy. Be on the lookout this week for your student bringing home a handy magnet to keep in your home. This serves as a helpful reminder about when to send your child to school and when to stay home when they are sick. One magnet per family will be distributed.
Panthers for a Purpose kicks off fundraising event
The Panther Foundation’s annual fundraising event, Panthers for a Purpose, is back. Proceeds raised directly support Spring Lake Park Schools' students. 2024 also marks an important milestone - the 20th anniversary of the annual fundraising event. Read more details about this year’s planned festivities including participating in the week of giving, supporting the weekend food pack program and purchasing party tickets.
