EYLSSA’S MISSION TRAINING
The adolescent years are marked by a roller-coaster ride of emotions—difficult for students, their parents, and educators. It is easy to misread depression as normal adolescent turmoil; however, depression (among the most common of mental illnesses) appears to be occurring at a much earlier age. Depression—which is treatable—is a leading risk factor for suicide. In addition, self-injury has become a growing problem among youth. To proactively address these concerns, Wredling and Thompson Middle Schools are offering depression awareness and suicide prevention training as part of the SOS Signs of Suicide® Prevention Program. The program aims to increase help-seeking by students concerned about themselves or a friend. Listed on SAMHSA’s National Registry of Evidence-Based Programs and Practices, the SOS Program showed a reduction in self-reported suicide attempts by 40-64% in randomized control studies (Aseltine et al., 2007 & Schilling et al., 2016).
If you would like more information, a parent meeting has been scheduled for October 23rd from 6:30-7:30 pm in the LRC at Thompson Middle School 6th grade center. A representative from Elyssa’s Mission will provide an overview of the program and answer any questions you may have. More information can also be found in the flyer attached.
HALLOWEEN COSTUMES
Wednesday, October 31st is Halloween. Students will be allowed to dress in their Halloween costumes at Thompson. We would like to remind the students to dress appropriately and to follow the guidelines listed below:
Costumes must be school appropriate
Costume/Hair/Make-up must be completed prior to the arrival at school or entering the bus. No spray cans are allowed on the bus or at school.
Costume accessories, if applicable, should not depict or display anything hurtful, harmful or have the opportunity to be utilized as a weapon.
The student’s identity should be visible and easily recognizable (i.e. no masks.)
The classroom learning environment should not be compromised due to a student’s costume.
PHYSICAL EDUCATION REMINDERS
All Physical Education students should bring their PE clothes home to be washed on Fridays and should be brought back for class on Mondays. Also, cooler weather is here! Please remind your son or daughter to bring in cold weather clothing such as sweatpants and sweatshirts. They are encouraged to be worn on the colder days.
Enjoy your weekend!

Veterans Day Assembly
This year we will be celebrating Veterans Day on November 12th! Veterans Day is a day set aside to honor American veterans of all wars. Many of us know or have known men and women in our families or friends who have served in the armed forces to defend our country. This year we would like to take time to honor these individuals by acknowledging their time served and to honor them at an assembly beginning at 9:00 am on that day.
If your child has someone in your family, or a friend of your family, who they would like to invite to attend our assembly and introduce to the Thompson community, please fill out the google form below by November 2nd. Students in our Builder's Club will be writing invitations to these individuals to invite them to this assembly.
