École Charlie Killam School Welcome to OUR HOUSE!

ADMINISTRATOR'S MESSAGE
Dear Families,
Happy February! The long month of January has passed by and we are well into February. Lots of things are going on here at ÉCKS with basketball in full swing, a new semester, and our Grade 7 & 8 students transitioning in the hallways. Our students have really stepped up with the new semester and learning is at the forefront.
We wanted to share a great resource with you for families to help support your child with Cellphones. Common Sense Media has lots of resources to access. Here is the link to a Guide for Parents and Caregivers: https://www.commonsensemedia.org/articles/cellphones-and-devices-a-guide-for-parents-and-caregivers
Our office team would also like to pass on a thank you to our families for their understanding and patience as we move to online permission forms. If you still need help accessing Rycor to pay fees or sign permission forms please contact the office for support.
Sincerely,
Andrea Gutmann

PARKING LOT
We are kindly requesting parents and guardians refrain from entering the staff parking lot at the end of the school day. We are attempting to keep the parking lot clear for accessibility reasons. With the extra traffic some students are struggling and stressed. We also need to be aware of the needs of the Handivan. Thank you for your assistance in keeping our school safe!
RESPONSIBILITY OF STUDENTS
Cutlery and water bottles are not provided in our school.
Students need to be wearing proper outdoor clothing.
Our doors do not open until 8:30 in the morning.
All students go outside everyday. Students must be prepared for this!
Please be sure your student is prepared and packed to have a successful day!
Online Permission Forms, Payments and Ordering
To create or access your Rycor account go to
https://www.brsd.ab.ca/families/online-payments-ordering
(If the link doesn’t work: go to the ÉCKS website } at the bottom of the home screen click on the large red button titled “Online Payments & Ordering”.)
Permission Forms - An email will be sent out if it is just a permission form, with the Rycor link, identifying which icon to use, and the details of the field trip (who, where, when, etc). Please pay attention to the deadline! This will also be how you are notified if there is a fee associated with the activity.
You access the form and the fee by clicking on the appropriate icon on the bottom of your student's page. This will open the form. Fill in the 3 fields that are blank and hit “submit” in the bottom right corner of the form. This will put the form in the cart. Once the form is in the cart, you will need to submit it again by clicking on the "confirm" button on the checkout page of your cart. Without this step, the form has not been submitted. If you have successfully submitted the form, you will be able to see it in the completed form sections in your account.
Please note that if there is a fee with the form, the fee has to be submitted and the form has to be completed (signed) and confirmed before your child will be registered for the trip.
Also please note that the forms can have an expiration date. This is so that we can pay for tickets, plan transportation, arrange subs for students not attending, etc.
Ordering - Hot Lunch must be ordered through Rycor. Email reminders are not sent out for these. Please read the school newsletters and have your child pay attention to morning announcements for deadlines.
Deadlines - If there is a deadline, THE FORM WILL DISAPPEAR AFTER THE DEADLINE AND YOU WILL NO LONGER BE ABLE TO SUBMIT THE PERMISSION FORM, ORDER HOT LUNCH OR PAY THE FEE.
Alberta Education Assurance Survey Information
Grade 7 students, their parents/guardians, and all ECCHS teachers will have an opportunity to provide their voice in the Alberta Education Assurance Survey. Parents/guardians of Grade 7 students will receive a survey code in the mail. This survey points us to areas of improvement for our school as well as areas to celebrate success. We use this important survey for our long-term planning so thank you for participating in it!
About the survey
Every year, Alberta Education surveys students, their parents and all teachers on behalf of schools and school authorities to assess what is working well and where there is room for improvement. The survey asks students in grades 4, 7 and 10, and their parents, about their thoughts, feelings and experiences in school. The survey will be administered between January and March 2024. In some schools, all students in grades 4 and above and their parents will be surveyed. Participants will be asked questions on a variety of topics, such as welcoming, caring, respectful and safe learning environments; student learning engagement; and parental involvement. The survey does not ask for names and cannot be used to identify individual participants.
Why is the survey needed?
Alberta’s Assurance Framework requires school authorities across the province to report their performance according to a number of different measures that provide key information about how the education system is doing. A provincial survey allows all school authorities to be measured on the same things at the same time.
Participation in the survey is voluntary:
• All participants may opt out of taking the survey at any time with no repercussions and/or skip any questions they do not wish to answer.
• All responses are anonymous. The survey does not collect personally identifiable information and Random Access Codes will be used to group responses by survey type, school and authority.
• Only grouped data where there are more than six responses are reported.
• All data collected will be managed in accordance with the
Freedom of Information and Protection of Privacy Act.
• If you have any questions regarding the survey or your child’s participation,
please contact your child’s school directly.
How will I take the survey?
• Parents or guardians are issued a single-use Random Access Code mailed through Canada Post to complete the survey online.
• The code must be used to access the survey and helps Alberta Education group your response as being from a parent/guardian. It is not used to identify individuals.
• Monitor your Canada Post mailbox starting late-January 2024 for the survey invitation package from Alberta Education.
• Parents or guardians with more than one student in an eligible grade will receive a separate survey invitation package for each child.
• Paper copies of the survey can also be requested through your school principal once the survey opens.
How will students take the survey?
• Students complete the survey at school.
• Before the survey begins, your child’s teacher or school staff will explain to the students that the survey is not a test – there are no right or wrong answers. They will also explain that there are no repercussions for opting out of participating and that they may skip questions they do not
wish to answer.
• Responses are submitted anonymously. Random Access Codes will be used to group responses by survey type, grade, school and school authority only.

DID YOU KNOW?
École Charlie Killam School has two Family School Liaison Workers, Dayna Bartman & Crystal Rapson. They provide free general counselling in the school setting. Students learn best when their mental health is supported. The FSLW's work with students and families to manage challenging events they might be facing, focusing on mental wellness for each student's individual needs. They can also provide ideas for support, bridging the way to resources outside of the school community.
Students over 14 are able to consent to seeing an FSLW on their own, and are asked to fill out a simple form that can be found in the school office. Parents and community service providers can also refer a student for FSLW service. Please note, anyone aged 13 or younger requires parental consent to see a Family School Liaison Worker.
If you have any questions about this service, please call the school at 780-672-7785 and ask to speak to one of the Family School Liaison Workers.
