Pirates Post
Week of October 4th
Message from Principal Drew...
This is a busy month at PCHS. We will be active participants in World Bullying Prevention Month and College Application Month throughout October. In observance of World Bullying Prevention Month we are challenging all Pirates to display your stance against bullying by wearing a blue shirt tomorrow, Monday October 4, 2021. If we join together and stand for each other we can help eliminate bullying in our school.
Our guidance counselors as well as our college coordinator will be working with each Senior this month to help them take advantage of several opportunities related to attending college next Fall. This month is FAFSA month as well as College Application Month. The week of October 18th through the 22nd is College Application Week. Most UNC system schools will waive application fees during this week. Being prepared to apply for college this week is critical. In an effort to assist our Seniors and their parents we are hosting a Parent College Night on Monday October 11th at 5:45 PM in our media center. Parents we will join with Ms. Amy Denton to share information about the college application process as well as financial aid opportunities. Please make plans to join us at this event to be sure your Senior is fully prepared for the college application process.

Pre-ACT...
The North Carolina Department of Public Instruction (NCDPI) has a partnership with ACT, a not-for-profit organization that provides educational assessment, research, information, and program management services. In North Carolina, all tenth-graders take the PreACT. This assessment measures what students have learned in their courses and helps educators identify the information that students still need to learn to succeed in college or a career.
The PreACT simulates the ACT testing experience by providing students early exposure to ACT test-quality questions. The PreACT is reported on the same 1–36 score scale as the ACT, but PreACT has a maximum score of 35. The PreACT also provides a predicted ACT composite score range.
The PreACT assessment includes four multiple-choice tests: English, math, reading, and science. The PreACT is designed to help parents and educators identify areas where students may need additional academic support or remediation. The PreACT can also help to initiate strategic conversations between parents and schools regarding dual enrollment decisions, identifying curriculum gaps, implementing interventions on behalf of students, and choosing Advanced Placement classes.
Tenth-grade students will be testing on October 20th.
Did You Know???
Here is a great class assignment that was completed by Jashad...
Mr. Aaron ”Shugg” Burke was born and raised in Newport News, Virginia. While growing up he learned the values of hard work and contributing to the family without expecting compensation. All the while idolizing his grandfather for being a strong caring man who took care of his family and his community providing him with a compassionate and moral role model. Later in life he moved to North Carolina to be closer to family.
Shugg used his knowledge of sports combined with his passion for helping others to become a diligent, vigorous, inspiring man who advocates for others. Coach Burke dedicates his time to coaching basketball and football helping athletes reach their full potential, following in the footsteps of his grandfather who coached the amazing Catfish Hunter. This passion came from playing football as a child, Coach Burke continued to play football in high school and some of his teammates went on to become professional athletes. In conclusion, this interview made me realize that Mr. Burke is so much more than a coach, he is an inspiration.
