Webster Weekly
September 29, 2023
WEbster Nation,
A huge thank you to the PTA and all who have already donated to this year's fundraising drive. It's not too late to participate. Please remember, when they say 100% participation, it means everyone donating at whatever level works for you and your family. We just want our community to have the feeling that each family has contributed SOMETHING to the essential fund that helps support Webster in so many important ways. I do hope you'll join us in this endeavor and get us to 100% participation as a community.
Congratulations to Mrs. Cooper's class for being the first class to reach 100% participation. I am already thinking about some plans for our little celebration party. In other news, I am excited to hit the trampoline and have some fun with some of our Whales on Sunday. Have a beautiful weekend, WEbster!!!
A final shout out to our own Clanton Begin from Mrs. Cooper's class. In addition to the students from last week's newsletter, Clanton also completed the Brainfreeze-Superbloom activities this summer and we wanted to take a moment to congratulate him for being so awesome!!
With gratitude,
- Tedd

WE ARE READERS!
The Bu Crew is reading! We are learning all about letters, words, and sentences and what makes a complete sentence. We have learned a song to help us remember the four things you have to include...ask us to sing it for you. 😊 We have been reading color poems together and making our own color books to read to ourselves, our friends, and our family. What fun it is to learn to read!
Mrs. Harris's 1st & 2nd Grade
Room 7 readers! We are building reading stamina, increasing our fluency, and just enjoying books! We also explored why birds have beaks. They kids tried two kinds of beaks and tried to pick up “food” without “rocks.” Which type do you think was better?
Ms. Lockwood's 2nd Grade
This week our fabulous Room Mom, Anya Fernald, shared her mastery skills with Room 2! The kids peeled, chopped and built two apples pies, then we enjoyed an Apple Pie Picnic with ice cream and fresh whipped cream! It was a total blast getting our hands dirty, thank you Anya!
Mrs. Stark's 3rd Grade
Room 8 enthusiastically investigated the properties of magnets, conducting experiments to explore their properties and magnetic fields. We had fun exploring and experimenting with the invisible force that acts at a distance. Finally, we learned how magnets can be used in everyday life by engineering a lock that opens bwith a magnet. We're wondering how else magnets are used everyday.
Mrs. Morris's 4th Grade
Justine always makes our garden lessons interesting and active! This week we learned about the importance of mulch...so we gathered it, delivered it to the garden, and spread it around! We found it to be quite stimulating and now we can't help but wax poetic about mulch. Please enjoy our limerick:
In the garden, there's mulch madness, they say,
Where the soil gets its nutrients each day.
With a shovel, they're flinging,
And the plants, they start singing,
For mulch makes their roots dance and sway!
Ms. Johnson's 5th Grade
This week was fun! We had our first art class of the year and in Social Studies we learned about the Eastern Woodlands region. This is my last week being your weekly news reporter 😞 It was so much fun being the weekly news reporter! Hopefully I will get to be it again later on this year! I wonder who will be the next reporter???
This week's Room 20 question of this week: What was your favorite school lunch this week?
" My favorite meal this week was carrots with chili" - Ori Franco
" My favorite lunch this week was the sandwiches" - Noel Rodriguez
" My favorite food this week was pasta so far!" - Elihu Castro
" I liked the rice and chicken we had today!" - Janne Korbelin
Thank you Ms. Neci!!!
Room 20’s Star Author This Month: Grace Goodloe
Mrs. London's 5th Grade
Who knew there were so many words to describe a marshmallow?! This week we continued our exploration of Thinking Maps as tools that can be used to brainstorm ideas, organize thinking, and also help us in our writing. We practiced using Bubble Maps to describe different types of objects. Students had a blast mindfully eating marshmallows, and using all five senses to come up with adjectives and descriptive language in order to create a student generated Bubble Map. As you can see, it was serious work! Plump, powdery, cylindrical, and satisfying we’re a few of my favorites. We also celebrated September birthdays this week, and the Patriots first win of the season with Popcorn For Patriots!
Our dear friends, Norman and Richie, rocked the cafetorium this morning as they whipped up our Whales into a drumming frenzy. Infusing history, language, music knowledge, and a ton of hands-on fun, Rhythm Child is an unforgettable experience for our students. Can’t think of a better way to kick off a Friday morning.
TIME FOR NEW MULCH
Justine and her hoards of tiny humans formed the most awesome work trains this week. New mulch was delivered to the gated area at the base of the field. Using buckets and wheelbarrows, our whales moved mulch over the fields, up the ramps, and across campus to the garden area. It truly took the whole system pitching in to help. Great job, team!
READY FOR LaUNCH on FRIDAY, OCT 6
Proposals are being written, composed, designed, drawn, and rehearsed as we speak! We should be ready to start our Lunch Clubs program next Friday, October 6. A huge thank you to the parents who have volunteered to monitor Poet's Park on Fridays during lunch. We appreciate you, Carley Devlin, Rachael Sokoloff, and Lisa Wallace!! The proposal process is extremely valuable. As students learn to think about their audience and craft a presentation that is engaging, persuasive, and informative, they are building essential skills for the future. Every movie that gets made, every business that forms, every idea that gets taken forward, is the result of one, or perhaps many, successful proposals by individuals or teams of collaborators. I am excited to see what the kids have been up to and how they will make a case for why their club should exist.

WAIT UNTIL 8TH
The Wait Until 8th pledge empowers parents to rally together to delay giving children a smartphone until at least 8th grade. By banding together, this will decrease the pressure felt by kids and parents alike over the kids having a smartphone. Please note that this pledge is for smartphones only! If you would like your child to have a basic phone that just calls and texts, you still can sign the pledge! The basic phone avoids many of the distractions and dangers of the smartphone.
Top 5 Reasons To Delay Getting a Smartphone
1 Smartphones are changing childhood.
2 They are distracting and addicting.
3 Smartphones expose your child to...
4 They increase risk for anxiety and depression.
5 Cyberbullying is an important concern.

WHY IS FINLAND ALWAYS AT THE TOP?
Finland is often hailed as the best education system on the planet. Consistently falling in the top one or two spots, what is it about Finland's approach that is so effective? Here are just a few facts that might spark some conversation as we move forward as a district.

Developing strong character and valuable mindsets is essential. This remains a major focus at Webster. As we build community here on campus, at home, and across Malibu, we will continue to model the kind of behavior that promotes unity, kindness, and thoughtful problem solving. In addition, we will value these traits in others and recognize outstanding efforts.
Every Friday we sport our Webster Wear to show school spirit and celebrate the coming weekend. Classes with the highest percentage of Webster Wear win the whale for the week. Be sure to show your spirit and pick up some Webster Wear in the main office when you stop in to say hello.
