HAYES HIGHLIGHTS
OCTOBER 2023
PRINCIPAL'S PLACE
Hello Hayes Families,
Fall is so much fun at Hayes Elementary! We are hard at work building classroom communities, focusing on relationships and continuing to build classroom routines. Seeing our students practicing our core values of being safe, responsible and kind makes my heart so happy! In the coming month of October, we have lots to look forward to. Our scholars will be learning about the Zones of Regulation, which is a cool way to talk about our feelings in relation to colors. We also have our fall fundraiser, the Fun Run, scheduled on October 13th. Feel free to join us, throw some color and cheer on your child running around the school or dance with them at the short dance party celebration after the run. Lastly, we will be celebrating Indigenous People's Day on October 9th. As a school we will be doing some really fun learning and activities. I look forward to seeing you all soon at our fall conferences.
Thanks,
Gaeli Iverson
Hayes Principal

VISIT OUR BOOK FAIR
Dear Families:
Get ready! The Scholastic Book Fair is coming our way (YAY!). Choosing their own books empowers kids and inspires them on their journey to becoming lifelong readers. AND—as always—every purchase at the Fair benefits our school.
Here’s what you need to know about the big event, which will take place from October 16-18 in the media center. Students can shop on Monday or Tuesday during the school day and families can shop during fall conferences.
Say goodbye to cash and hello to eWallet—your child’s digital payment account. Before the Fair, set up eWallet for worry-free, cash-free purchases. Anyone can contribute! Share each child’s eWallet so friends and family can add funds and give your kids more books to enjoy.
If you can’t make it to the Fair, then shop at our school’s Book Fair online. All orders ship directly to your home, and shipping is free for book orders over $25. Every online purchase will also benefit our school.
Visit our Book Fair homepage to learn more and get started with eWallet and online shopping:

MUSIC MANIA
We are talking about the instrument families, and in order to show the brass family, Ms. Fisher had everyone try the trombone.
This scholar played so well, this was her first time and she looked like a natural!
ZONES WEEK
On October 2nd - 6th, all students at Hayes will be learning about the Zones of Regulation. Click our photo to learn more!
PHY ED FUN
Physical education provides cognitive content and instruction designed to develop motor skills, knowledge, cooperation and team skills as well as behaviors for physical activity and physical fitness.
SEL WORKS WELL
Our Hayes Giraffes kicked off our 6-week SEL curriculum by showing their fantastic art skills while creating Self-Portraits to show who they are. SEL (Social Emotional Learning) lessons are being provided in classrooms once per week by members of the Student Support Team to help students develop and apply knowledge and skills related to developing healthy identities, identifying and managing emotions, feeling and showing empathy for others, and developing supportive relationships. Other topics that are being covered through SEL lessons include Classroom Community, Size of the Problem (problem-solving), Zones of Regulation, Growth Mindset, and Bullying Prevention.
NUTRITION NEWS
Hello Families-
If you have not completed the 2023-2024 Application for Educational Benefits, please complete the form through the Campus Parent Portal at https://fridleymn.infinitecampus.org/campus/portal/parents/fridley.jsp Families that are approved for free/reduced priced meals can receive additional benefits such as reduced park and rec fees, reduced internet fees and discounted metro bus passes. The completion of the form also helps fund important programs within the district including additional para support and teachers in the classroom. A new application should be completed each school year.
Did you know that all students can receive one breakfast and lunch each day at no charge? Breakfast is served in the classroom or hallway depending on the grade. We offer a variety of breakfast options during the week and students must take a ½ cup fruit at breakfast time. Lunch is served in the cafe. We offer one hot and one cold entree per day. There are many kid favorites including pizza, hamburgers on bun, school made mac and cheese and walking taco. In the coming months we will be introducing more cultural dishes to our students. If your child is bringing cold lunch, milk is not free of charge. We will ask students who want just a milk to come through the lunch line to take a reimburseable meal. All students must take a ½ cup fruit or vegetable at lunch time.
If you have an outstanding lunch balance from last year, please go to the Campus Parent Portal to pay off the amount owed. The outstanding lunch balances carry over from year to year. If you have any questions regarding Nutritional Services, please contact Renee Arbogast at 763-502-0022.
Thank you,
Renee

NEWS FROM FPS COMMUNICATION DPT
Parent/Guardian Update on Legislative Changes to Exclusionary Discipline Practices
We want to provide families with an overview of recent changes made by the Minnesota Legislature about student discipline and “exclusionary practices,” which are disciplinary actions that remove or exclude a student from their usual educational setting.
Most notably, state law prohibits (in most instances) the suspension of students in pre-K through third grade. There are some exceptions noted in the law. There are also new limitations on impacting a student’s participation in recess as a consequence of misbehavior, as recess is a necessary time for children to move, socialize and get ready for learning. When appropriate, state law allows schools to provide alternative recess at the student's choice.
We will not use recess detention unless (1) a student causes or is likely to cause serious physical harm to other students or staff, (2) a student's parent or guardian specifically consents to the use of recess detention, or (3) a student's IEP team determines that withholding recess is appropriate based on the individualized needs of the student. We will not withhold recess from a student based on incomplete schoolwork, and we will notify parents/guardians within 24 hours if recess detention occurs.
If you have questions about Fridley Public Schools disciplinary procedures, or about the new legislation, please contact the director of special services, Laura Seifert-Herting, at laura.seifert@fridley.k12.mn.us or 763-502-5024.

Opting Your Student out of School Photographs and "Directory Information"
Under state law, “directory information” may be released to the public without permission of the student, parent or guardian. Directory information includes a student’s name, school of attendance or grade level, participation in officially recognized activities and sports, weight and height of members of athletic teams, dates of attendance, diploma and awards received, photograph, and the most recent previous educational agency or institution attended. It also includes the name of the student’s designated guardian. Directory information does not include a student’s home address, telephone number, email address or other personal contact information, or data that reference religion, race, color, social position or nationality.
If a student or parent/guardian does not want some or all of this information to be made public, they must complete Form 515F (Directory Information Opt-Out Form) and submit the form to their child’s school each school year. Fridley Public Schools designates certain records as directory information to be used only for school or district-approved programs, publications, yearbooks, cablecasts, webcasts, athletic teams, clubs, activities and other public presentations. Those records include but are not limited to student: photographs, videos and other visual representations.
