'Tis the Season

As we begin to bundle up and prepare for the cold (because we know the cold begins here just after the winter break!), I want to extend to you all warm winter wishes and a very merry holiday season. So take those jackets out of storage and begin collecting your firewood. This time of the year is all about those wonderful cheerful memories and spreading smiles and kindness everywhere you go. Welcome all our new ACE families who are just now joining us and a gracious hello back to our families who have been with ACE from the start.

Our ACE student's explored different careers during our after-school programming and dreamt up what they aspire their futures to look like. The Lights On event allowed them to showcase some of their work and to share with you all how proud they are of all their accomplishments. By coming to our events and being present you are showing your kiddos how proud you are of them and your support. Thank you for shining a light on the importance of after-school programs and for being the number one support for your student(s). You are ACE-ing in family engagement! A Grinch Holiday!

This month our ACE centers will be hosting a Grinch Holiday for our family event! So get ready to hear the Grinch's story and watch his heart grow, grow, and grow. Please be on time so that you do not miss out on any of the wonderful activities that we have planned. We are asking families to donate any individually wrapped green snacks and drinks. In addition, we will also be completing a Grinchy science experiment and will be needing vinegar and baking soda. If you would like to donate any of these items to make our event the most memorable please reach out to your on-site coordinator. We hope to see you at our Grinch extravaganza!

AS A REMINDER, ON FAMILY EVENT DAYS PLAN TO STAY FOR THE WHOLE EVENT. THE STUDENTS MUST BE PICKED UP INSIDE OF THE SCHOOL. PLEASE BE MINDFUL OF WHERE YOU ARE PARKING AND DO NOT BLOCK OTHER VEHICLES.

¡Una fiesta de Grinch!

¡Este mes, nuestros centros ACE organizarán una Fiesta de Grinch para nuestro evento familiar! Así que prepárate para escuchar el cuento del Grinch y ver cómo su corazón crece, crece y crece. Llegue a tiempo para no perderse ninguna de las maravillosas actividades que hemos planeado. Les pedimos a las familias que donen los bocadillos y bebidas color verdes envueltos individualmente. Winter break means a well-deserved reprieve from homework and daily obligations. But before you know it, the holidays will be over and it will be back to the bus stop. To prepare for a smooth re-entry and a successful second semester, don't let school skills like reading, writing, and math slide completely during winter vacation. Try these family-friendly activities to keep skills sharp:

• Read for pleasure. Whether your child is in the mood for holiday stories or the newest installment from their favorite series, winter break provides the perfect opportunity to stash schoolbooks and read for FUN. Encourage relatives to give books as holiday gifts or gather in front of the fire (big kids too!) to take turns reading from classic tales.
  
• Cook up an easy lesson. Invite your child into the kitchen to help you whip up a special dish — from holiday cookies to potato pancakes. All of those half-tablespoon and quarter-cup measurements are great practice with fractions.
  
• Write thank-you notes. Penning notes of appreciation to gift-givers teaches gratitude and helps polish writing and spelling skills. One final tip: a mug of hot cocoa can make this task feel more festive!
  
• Make the most of car rides. Turn the drive to or from a holiday get-together into an opportunity to practice letters and numbers. You can look for license plates from different states, try to find the alphabet on the license plates, or count the number of red (or white or green) cars you see.
  
• Maintain reasonable bedtimes. With no school to get up for in the morning, it can be tempting to let kids become night owls. A few days before school starts up again, ease back into the regular bedtime schedule so your child can start the year bright-eyed.
  
• Ask for grocery list assistance. Have your child help choose what to buy, decide how much you need, check your supplies to see what you've already got, write or draw pictures on the list, and sort coupons.
  
• Let kids help with online shopping. Need a last-minute gift for Grandma or Uncle Joe? Log onto your favorite shopping sites and let your child help you select presents. This helps children work on their computer and research skills.
  
• Have a family game night. Chances are many of your family's favorite board and card games reinforce skills such as counting, reading, and drawing. Gather the group to play games you usually don't have time for on school nights.

Las vacaciones de invierno significan un merecido respiro de la tarea y las obligaciones diarias. Pero antes de que te des cuenta, las vacaciones se acabarán y volverá a la parada del autobús.
