Laker Career Series
We would like to launch a career series here at Lake Oswego High and we are in need of speakers! Do you have any interesting, charismatic contacts you could reach out to? Maybe that charismatic person is you!
We would like to share a variety of career journies with students and the winding path it may have taken to get there.
What would this mean? We plan to offer the career series during Tuesday's Support Seminar, 10:02 - 10:32. This could be a panel of a few people in the same industry speaking about it or it could be one person sharing their skills, degrees, training, etc. If you know of someone who would be a great fit, please contact Stevie Alves, her information is below. We are hoping to launch the series by mid-late February.
If interested please email Stevie Alves (alvess@loswego.k12.or.us)

OSAS Testing Beginning January 30th for Juniors
Our juniors will participate in the Oregon State Assessment in English Language Arts, Mathematics, and Science beginning Monday, January 30.
Full participation in these summative tests is the expectation of the Lake Oswego School District and the Oregon Department of Education. Federal rules require 95% participation from all high school students across the country. We recognize that Oregon’s unique law allowing parents to opt out their students creates challenges around participation in these summative tests; however, we are communicating to you the importance of full participation so that our school meets the 95% criteria. Your participation in state assessment benefits our entire school community, school pride, and you!
Student participation helps improve teaching and learning experiences for all students. The purpose of standardized testing is to measure how well students understand and are able to apply the skills and knowledge required by state standards — all students from all backgrounds and walks of life. State assessment data, when all students participate, provides our school and district staff with meaningful feedback that is used to improve teaching practices, learning experiences, and academic outcomes for all students.
Students whose parents opt them out of state assessment will be required to complete a local assessment during the same time as students who are completing the state assessment. The local assessment will also allow the district to measure how well students understand and are able to apply the skills and knowledge required by state standards.
Student participation benefits your future, personally. Assessment results are one way to know how well-prepared you are for the next chapter in school and life, and what support you may need to be most effective. Additionally, results may be used for placement in two- and four-year colleges, in lieu of SAT and ACT which come with a cost and time outside of school. The English Language Arts state assessment also provides an eligible writing score required by some colleges, which the SAT no longer offers.
OSAS participation impacts the reputation of Lake Oswego High School. Third-party organizations that publish school rankings require that a certain percentage of students participate in state assessments. These school rankings factor into some college admissions decisions, influence your school’s national reputation and even impact home values in the area. Unfortunately, Lake Oswego High has been left off ranking lists for the past three years because so many parents have opted not to have their students participate. We have been able to ride previous school rankings, but for how long?
It’s time Lake Oswego High gets back on the list. I know how much our students take pride in demonstrating their outstanding athletic, activity, and academic achievements. By taking the state assessment seriously with full participation, we can reclaim our rightful spot as one of the best schools in the state and among the top in the nation.
To accommodate student participation, we have created an optional testing schedule. If students are absent on the scheduled day, we have make-up days built in. School administrators and counselors are on hand to answer any questions or concerns you may have about participation.
Thank you in advance for committing to full participation in state assessment this year.

Ways to report incidents related to bias, racism or harassment in losd
Parents-guardians who have concerns about a student’s well-being are encouraged to reach out to their principal, and to maintain strong lines of communication and partnership between students, families, staff, and other resources. SafeOregon is also an effective way to report a tip regarding safety threats or potential acts of violence to our students or schools. Students should also be aware that intentionally providing a false report is a serious offense. https://www.safeoregon.com/
In addition, below are reporting methods for parents-guardians or students to use to report issues related to racist, bias, or harassment incidents.
Oregon State Assessment Opt-Out Form
Each school year, Oregon students take assessments to meet federal requirements. The purpose of these assessments is to provide data that schools can use to ensure that every child is on track and achieving learning goals.
State law requires us to inform you that a form is available from the State Department of Education that allows you to opt your child out of the math and English Language Arts assessments for the current school year. Should you wish to opt out your child, fill out the form and submit it to the main office at your child’s school. Please note the submission deadlines listed on the form. Meeting the deadline will help the school with planning and preparation. If you wish your child not to participate in the science assessment for grades 5, 8, and 11, submit this request in writing to the principal of your child's school.
If you have questions or want more information about state assessments, please contact your child’s principal or teacher(s).
