University School Weekly Update

We hope everyone was able to enjoy the weekend break! As we prepare for the week ahead, we ask that you please review the information below:

Elementary School Honoree – Brodie Campbell

Brodie is a friend to all! He is helpful in the classroom and to his classmates. He is always willing to go the extra mile to help out. He is a hard worker and continues to work hard even when things get tough. He doesn’t give up and keeps trying until he figures it out.

• What career do you plan to pursue? “I want to be a ‘You-Tuber’ with game videos like Minecraft and Roblox.”

Middle School Honoree – Kierstin Teffeteller

Even though she has a reserved disposition, Kierstin is kind, artistic, respectful, conscientious, joyful, and collaborative. She smiles frequently and exhibits a plethora of generosity.

• Which Emoji best represents you? “The emoji that best suits me is the sleepy one.”

• You get to trade places with an animal for 24 hours. What animal are you picking? “If I were to choose what animal to be for 24 hours it would be a cat, they don't have to do much and they get to sleep most of the time throughout the day.”

• What career do you plan to pursue? “The career I plan to pursue is video game design and/or digital art.”

“We are so proud of the growth in her willingness to be more of a leader in the classroom!” said Kierstin’s Middle School teachers.

High School Honoree – Andrew Cole

Andrew is a meticulous and hard-working student. He demonstrates his enthusiasm for learning by being engaged and by asking questions to clarify his understanding. Andrew is kind and generous to others by sharing his notes if someone is absent or offering supplies if a classmate is in need. Due to his academic perseverance and honorable character, he is an appreciated member of our school community.

• Which Emoji best represents you? “The laughing Emoji because I laugh a lot on a daily basis.”

• You get to trade places with an animal for 24 hours. What animal are you picking? “I would be an eagle because I would be able to fly.”

• What career do you plan to pursue? “I don't have anything currently planned, but I would like to do something sports or business related in the future.”

“Andrew is a model student in my class,” explained Mrs. Jessica Lee, his World History instructor. “He submits his assignments on time and with great care and completeness. These qualities combined with his honesty and integrity, make him a great example of a student who values their education. In addition, his character is striking in his kindness and generosity to those around him. He is a leader both academically and how one should treat others with respect and decency.”

Middle School Soccer Interest Group:

As a follow-up to the athletics discussion, we are forming a group to discuss adding middle school soccer. If you are interested in being part of that initial discussion please email Mike Hoff, hoffmb@etsu.edu.

If you need help with math in high school or middle school, there is a new Math Help Club. The meetings are on Mondays and Thursdays from 3:15 - 5:00 p.m., in Learning Cottage 2 (Mrs. Sim's room).

There will be No School on Thursday, November 11th, in observance of the Veteran's Day Holiday, and there will also be No School on Friday, November 12, 2021 because it is a scheduled professional development day.

Key Club of University School is teaming up with Johnson City Kiwanis Club in their annual Socks & PJs clothing drive for area homeless youth ages 5-18. There are three ways to donate:

1. Club members from both organizations will be in front of TJ Maxx Johnson City collecting clothing donations on Saturday, November 13th from 10am to 5:30pm, and on Sunday November 14th from 1:30-5:30pm.
2. Key Club has a donation bin in the lobby of the school
3. Leave a check payable to Johnson City Kiwanis Club in the US office for Ms. Squibb to forward to them.

Bucky's Food Pantry Seeks Donations of Winter Coats

Bucky’s Food Pantry is proud to be holding its Annual Winter Coat Drive for those who are in need within the ETSU community. Many thanks to the folks who have contributed coats, accessories and their time in the past. Know that your contributions have made a difference for members of our community. In addition to new or clean, gently used winter coats, the pantry is also accepting new winter hats, gloves, and scarves.

Donations of winter coats and accessories can be made directly to one of two locations of Bucky’s Food Pantry at the Culp Center (next to the Passport Office) or at Buc Ridge (next to Central Receiving), or at the ETSU Counseling Center (Culp Center, third floor) or University School (School Office, first floor). We anticipate other drop-off locations and will send those out soon. The collection will continue through Nov. 19. The coat giveaway will occur during the week of Nov. 15-19. The Chess and Gaming Clubs will meet at 3:00 p.m., in Room 214 (2nd floor Media Center Library), on the following dates:

November 3rd, 9th, 17th, 23rd, and December 1st, 8th

If students bring their own devices, then the following must be signed and brought in with the device: Bring Your Own Device Agreement Signature

The high school fall formal will take place on Nov. 20 at the Heritage in Jonesborough (161 Molly Grayce Lane, Jonesborough, TN 37659) beside the Food City. The Fall Formal is from 7:30pm to10:30pm. This event is open to our high school students. Students may bring one outside guest. Guests must be high school students. A guest permission form signed by an administrator at the guest student's school must be turned in to the office by 11/18/21.

Students will be required to wear masks unless parents sign a mask waiver for the fall formal specifically. Please bring a signed note to the Fall Formal.

Tickets are $15 each and will be available to purchase online shortly.

High School boys Soccer will be having an informational meeting on Wednesday, November 10th in the UH cafeteria, at 6:00 p.m. If you are interested in playing High School Boys Soccer, please plan on attending this meeting with at least one parent.

Please note that all items left in Lost and Found are donated to charity at the end of each quarter. Lost and Found is located beside the school cafeteria in the hallway. Please see Officer Hudson or the main office for any questions.

As we prepare for the changing of the seasons, we ask that our families please review our inclement weather policy. Although we have a partnership with Washington County Schools, we do want to remind our families that we follow a different calendar and inclement weather and emergency closure policy, so please be sure to review the information below:

Inclement Weather & Emergency Closure Policy:

When there is inclement weather:

• University School will close if Johnson City Schools close for inclement weather.
• University School will also close for inclement weather if ETSU closes.
• University School will close if there is need due to an emergency at the school.

We will not make an announcement through the news media due to the fact that saying University School will be closed is confusing to ETSU students. Instead we ask that our students and parents/guardians be aware of the reasons for closure stated above and refer to the University School website and social media sites for updated announcements.

We are aware some students live in areas where the weather may be worse than it is in town. Therefore, if University School is open but road conditions between your home and the school are dangerous, we ask that you please do not put yourself at risk by attempting to drive to school. If this were to occur, please call the school office and inform us of your circumstances. On inclement weather days when Johnson City Schools are not regularly scheduled, announcements will be made through our normal email distribution, website, and social media outlets.
