Celebrating Science and STEM
The Dodgen Middle School Science Olympiad Team won the Georgia State Science Olympiad on March 18th at South Cobb High School. The students won first place in 9 of the 23 events and will advance to the National Science Olympiad Tournament.
Congratulations to Stephen Litt (Lovinggood) and Safi Ahmed (Dickerson) for their outstanding performances in the Georgia State Science Fair at UGA on March 30th – April 1st. For his project, “Does EGCG Stop Planarian Tumors? A Cancer Cure Pathway”, Stephen was awarded the Outstanding 7th Grade Project Award, a GSEF Best in Category Award, a First Honors Junior Division Award and two additional awards. His innovative project was also featured in the front page of the Marietta Daily Journal on Monday, March 10th.
Safi Ahmed’s project, “Heart Burn Remedy, REWARD: Instant Relief”, also won numerous awards including a First Honors Junior Division Award, a GSEF Best in Category Award, and an NABT Biology and Life Science Project Award. Each of these were outstanding projects, especially for middle school students.
Big Shanty and Shallowford Falls Elementary both received Cobb STEM Certification in the past few weeks and Wheeler High School became the first school in Cobb to receive STEAM certification from the Georgia Department of Education. Cooper Middle School completed their trifecta and received Advanced Ed STEM certification.

Engage Cobb Summer Conference June 13-15
Elementary School Sessions:
Elementary sessions are scheduled for a half-day so that teachers can attend all four content area workshops over the course of the two days. The science workshop will provide an overview of the 3-D approach to science instruction where core Ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts are integrated into daily instruction. Grade specific lessons using a 3-D approach will also be modeled and discussed.
Tuesday, June 13th- 8:30-11:30 (3-5) OR 12:30-3:30 (K-2)
Wednesday, June 14th- 8:30-11:30 (K-2) OR 12:30-3:30 (3-5)
Middle and High School Sessions:
Choose from either the Two-Day Deep Dive or the One Day Overview.
Two Day Deep Dive: This 2 day session (6/13 and 6/14, 8:30-3:30) will include an in-depth investigation of the new science standards and an overview of the 3-D approach to science instruction where core Ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts are integrated into daily instruction. You will learn how to implement each of the science and engineering practices through doing grade-level-specific 3-D lessons. Time for planning your own 3-D lesson will also be included.
One Day Overview: This 1 day session (6/13 only, 8:30-3:30) will include an introduction of the new science standards and an overview of the 3-D approach to science instruction where core Ideas, science and engineering practices, and crosscutting concepts are integrated into daily instruction. Grade specific lessons using a 3-D approach will also be modeled and discussed.
