Eisenhower Elementary Building Update
Dear Families:
On Monday, February 28, 2022 the IASD Board of Directors approved a motion for a contract with our architect firm authorizing for design and coordination, including Schematic Design, Design Development, Construction Documents, Bidding, and Construction Administration phases, regarding Eisenhower (IKE) Elementary.
The supply chain issues and COVID issues have made it extremely difficult for our architect to estimate an accurate schedule for the reopening of IKE. With these new inputs, the earliest we estimate the reopening of IKE is May 2024. This reopening date could easily be pushed a year with all the unknowns with material availability and delivery and the labor shortage. The administration and Board of Directors are working with the architect firm to see what can be done to expedite the process/construction. We will continue to work towards the earliest reopening date possible, but please understand the constraints that we are faced with are, for a vast majority, outside of the control of the District. Status updates will be provided periodically to provide you with the most up-to-date information.
As such, this means that students who attend Eisenhower Elementary will continue to be housed at the Indiana Area Junior High School.
On behalf of the Board of Directors, we are extremely excited to begin the process of renovating Eisenhower Elementary School and encourage you to reach out to your building principal if you have any additional questions and/or concerns.

New York Times Article
Click here to read a recent article in the New York Times regarding how severely behind some students are in reading. The article goes on to explain how experts are urging schools to adjust to the Science of Reading Framework which IASD has transitioned to three years ago.
The transition was hard and difficult, but it was necessary for our students - all students. According to the article, "In 2019, results on national and international exams showed stagnant or declining American performance in reading, and widening gaps between high and low performers. The causes are multifaceted, but many experts point to a shortage of educators trained in phonics and phonemic awareness — the foundational skills of linking the sounds of spoken English to the letters that appear on the page.
The pandemic has compounded those issues."
Despite the difficulties in the change, it was necessary and needed. I am grateful for the efforts of so many who saw the need to change and commitment to make the necessary changes. We have an incredible District filled with great teachers, support staff, nurses, and administrators. I encourage you to reach out to your child's school for more information.

IHS Science Club Donation
Mark Arbuckle of Arbuckle Nissan and long-time assistant coach of IHS Boys' Varsity Basketball recently donated $5000 to the IHS Science club. The IHS Science club provides many students the opportunity to grow and learn in their aptitudes and interests in their study of science while successfully competing against their peers across the state.
This kind and generous donation will allow the students to devote more time, energy, and focus to the development of their science projects for upcoming regional and statewide science competitions via the prestigious Pittsburgh Regional Science and Engineering Fair program.
On behalf of our students, faculty advisors, Ms. Emily Hixson, Ms. Jamie Edmonds, Mr. Michael Lehman, and Dr. Scott Layden and the school community, thank you, Mr. Arbuckle, for your thoughtfulness and kindness in supporting our students in their participation in pursuit of worthwhile academic endeavors via extracurricular activities at Indiana Area Senior High School.
