Decatur community,
105. It's not a score. It's not an address. It's not the population of a small town in northern Alaska. 105 students qualified for Honor Roll recognition during the first semester of the school year. We consistently promote all of the things that we are doing as a school when it comes to course offerings, sports, activities, all of the things that make a school stand out from others. However, let us never forget that the most fundamental function of any school is academics and preparing our students for the future. Congratulations to the 105 students that have made the First Semester Honor Roll list.
SHOUTOUTS
Shoutout to the city of Plainville and their educational staff. Last Thursday, we had almost 30 JH wrestlers, cheerleaders, and staff stranded in Plainville due to sudden weather that blocked safe paths home. The Plainville administration immediately went into action. They allowed our students and staff to sleep at the school, use school equipment for activities, and purchased Pizza Hut pizzas for them all. They even reached out to the local community, and the town supplied blankets and pillows to make an uncomfortable situation as comfortable as possible.
Shoutout to our Band teacher Mr. Brad Persinger. Mr. Persinger is never one to hesitate to give his students the best opportunities to experience band at its fullest. This past weekend, Mr. Persinger and his students (pictured) attended the Kansas State Concert Band Clinic in Manhattan. It was a great experience for them all, and I look forward to asking each of the students how it went.
Shoutout to our Vo.-Ag. teacher Mr. Jason Ketterl. Mr. Ketterl and his FFA students are always ready and willing to help out. Recently, he and several FFA students took an academic field trip to Colorado, emphasizing the various opportunities that he is providing, but my focus in simply in the aid several of his students provided at the Gateway banquet this past weekend. Friday night several students set up tables for the banquet, and Saturday night students helped bus the tables.
Shoutout to our outgoing school board members, Mrs. Spring Louderback, Mr. Roger May, and Mr. Monte Moore. January is School Board Appreciation Month, and I will address current members next week, but I want to first thank our three outgoing members. Each of these members did an outstanding job for many years, each with the best intent. Even as I look forward to all that our new members will accomplish, I will miss the the experience and love for Oberlin that these three showed every month. Enjoy your extra time and the lessened load.
Shoutout to Counselor Jillian Springer for organizing the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) night for our senior students. Transitioning from public school to college has its challenges, many of which are technical, and Mrs. Springer wants to ensure that questions are answered and that we can make the transition as smooth as possible. I encourage all parents and students to come. Sometimes, students and parents are just unaware of the supports that are out there.
Shoutout to art teacher Anthony Marshall. It's about that time again to take a look in on Mr. Marshall's students and their work. The semester changed, and he got a few new students at the high school, but the creativity and endless drive are still there. What an amazing addition Mr. Marshall has been to DCHS. Take a look at some samples below.

Things You Should Know
First Semester High School Honor Roll
To make the Decatur Community Honor Roll, you must make a minimum of a 3.0 average (B average), and you cannot have any D or F on your transcript for that semester. There are three recognitions:
3.0-3-49- Red Devil Honor Roll
3.5-3.99- Principal’s Honor Roll
4.0- USD 294 Boards Honor Roll
Almost 70% of our students made the Honor Roll this semester. That is truly amazing. It speaks volumes about many things involving the school, but, too me, it speaks directly to the high standards, values, and expectations that students and families in this community have placed on education and their children’s lives.
Students either have received or will be receiving a certificate over the course of the next week. I look forward to seeing some shared pictures of certificates on a fridge for families to see.

High School Wrestlers Do well at Tough Beloit Tournamet
Beloit is our only two day tournament of the wrestling season until we get to the post-season. It is traditionally a very tough tournament that draws great wrestlers from across the state, including 5A schools with over 1,000 students in just grades 9-12. Our boys went and competed, with our three most experienced placing.
Junior Garrett Emigh Takes 4th at 175.
At this tournament last year, Garrett placed 6th.
Senior Reid Fort finishes 4th at 132
Last year, Reid wrestled at 120 in the Beloit tournament and did not place.
Senior Lukas Zodrow Takes 2nd at 138
Lady Red Devils Go 2-1 While taking 3rd in the NWKL Tournament
Congratulations to the Lady Red Devils on a stellar performance this past week. Wallace County would never be the location that we would choose for the NWKL Tournament. Not because the facilities aren't fine or that the people aren't great, but it's a long ways out there, and three times we made that trip over the course of 5 days.
Having said that, the Lady Red Devils went 2-1 during the tournament, with big victories over Ness City and Atwood. Their one loss came to top seeded Quinter. Congratulations to Coach Gehring, Coach Roe, and the girls on their finish.
DCHS 36 vs Ness City 27
The girls kicked off the tournament with a big 36-27 victory over Ness City in the 4 v 5 game.
DCHS 26 vs Quinter 52
DCHS lost to top seed Quinter in the semifinals.
DCHS 38 vs Atwood 31
The girls took down rival Atwood for the second time on the season in the 3rd Place matchup.
Red Devil Ready
As I am hustling through this message to get ready for the game, I am amazed at how consistent it has been that every year I write about the Honor Roll, the Chiefs are in a playoff game that is either underway or about to start as I am typing. This goes back many years before I came to Oberlin. I'm a Broncos fan, so it's been a long time since I have had much to cheer about in January when it comes to football, but I would still be happy for all of those out there that I care about if the Chiefs get a win.
That's mainly for you, Dad!
Good luck tonight, Chiefs' fans!
Until next week,
Jeremy Holloway
