From The Desk of Mrs. Doyle
Dear Peter Noyes Families,
Welcome to December! We are so excited to have the Book Fair next week. The second graders had the best time doing their Image Making today. Many grade levels achieved the Food Pantry goal last week, so Mrs. Moffat and I will be supervising a lot of extra recesses coming up soon and we are happy to do it for this great cause. Thank you so much to all our parent volunteers who help make all these events and so many more possible.
CHORES AND ROUTINES
I am excited to share a new web page which was recently added to our district Social-Emotional Resources site and it’s all about chores and routines at home. Thank you for curating these resources for us, Dr. Clark! Please peruse these resources when you have time. Here’s the short version though–children benefit tremendously from having age-appropriate responsibilities around the house. It fosters self-confidence, builds responsibility, and develops a healthy work ethic. As a mom, I definitely made many mistakes, but my kids knew they had chore responsibilities they were expected to complete and they did them. Maybe it was the lack of technology access until these were completed that was motivating? One will never know. When they were little, we started with simple tasks like unpacking and hanging up their backpacks, setting the table, and putting away their toys. When they were older, they were unloading/loading the dishwasher, doing their own laundry, and making simple meals. Now they are both in college and I can really see how the ongoing increases in responsibilities over time helped them develop good habits and time management skills, as well as self-confidence. Post high school life for your youngsters feels far away for many of you, but trust me, you are building the foundation of their future success right now.
WINTER WEATHER
We have had a taste of the cold winter weather recently and we know more is on the horizon. Please know that we go outside for recess every day and students must be prepared with warm coats, snow pants (when necessary), mittens/gloves, hats, and boots (when necessary). If the weather is excessively cold or there is precipitation (more than mist and flurries), we stay indoors for recess. Thank you for making sure your children are prepared for the winter weather at school every day. If there is a financial hardship in securing winter coats and boots, please reach out to Kristin Moffat or me.
SNOW DAYS/DELAYS
Speaking of winter weather, you can find information related to snow days and school delays in the Inclement Weather Procedures section of the SPS website. The most important thing to note is that our system will send a message to the phone number in Follett Aspen, so be certain your phone numbers are accurate in our Follett/Aspen Student Information System. Another important thing to know is that there is no Sudbury Extended Day in the morning if there is a school delay and none at all if school is canceled. Also, any snow days will be “real” snow days, not “remote learning days.” Cue the cheers from students and teachers.
2024-2025 SPS CALENDAR
If you’re a planner like me, you might be interested to know that the 2024-2025 SPS calendar has been approved by the School Committee and posted on the website. Look at that nice long winter break next year.
HOLIDAY ASSISTANCE FOR FAMILIES IN NEED
The Sudbury Police Department is sponsoring “Shop with a Cop” on December 14 where a child in need can shop with a police officer and spend up to $50 selecting items of their choice. This is geared for children ages 5-13. There is also a Holiday Assistance Program through the Sudbury Police Association. I’m including the Google forms below for both.
Have a wonderful weekend.
Warmly,
Annette Doyle
