American Heart Association Fundraiser
CMIT North Middle School Families, the American Heart Association’s American Heart Challenge (AHC), kicked off on Thursday, March 2nd.
Please register today, under our school, at heart.org/AHC.
By participating in the American Heart Challenge students can raise awareness and funds for congenital heart defects, nutrition security, CPR training, mental well-being, and more as we work to end heart disease and stroke. Along the way students will meet some of the kids they’re helping while learning about mind and body health.
Once you've registered, start Finn’s Mission and complete the challenges. As a family you can help to create a community of lifesavers by learning the lifesaving steps of Hands-Only CPR. It’s quick, easy, and fun! Learn more about Finn and his special challenge at https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lvxciz10EtA.
If you would like for your student to participate, please print and fill out the permission and homework form attached below and return to Mr. Johnson, Guidance Counselor. Each student that returns both forms will receive 1 Student Service-Learning Hour to go toward their high school diploma.
Thank you for keeping hearts everywhere beating strong!

Charter School Facility Funding Bill
Currently Maryland Public Charter Schools are excluded from facility funding in the amount of $2000 per student. This is an inequity that the Maryland legislature has an opportunity to correct. The passing of SB0646 would enable charter schools to apply for these funds allowing us to put more money in the classroom to directly benefit students and teachers.
Please read on to learn more about the bill and how you can support it.
SB0646 School Construction - Public Charter School Facility Fund - Establishment sponsored by Senator McCray is a bill that allows public charter schools to apply for up to $2000 per pupil annually for eligible facilities-related expenses. This funding does not impact the Blueprint formula or take funding away from any other public school students. This money comes from the State's General Fund. SB0646 will allow more Blueprint dollars to be spent in the classroom on learning instead of on the school's facility. Additionally, the bill ensures spending accountability and transparency.
Charter school students are public school students and deserve equal access to safe and adequate school buildings. As the largest charter school operator in Maryland, CLF believes that SB0646 is a crucial step in addressing the current inequities faced by charter school students, families, and staff in Maryland. With your support, we can work towards ensuring that all students, regardless of the type of public school they attend, have access to quality facilities that foster academic success. Our bill hearing will be held on TUESDAY, MARCH 7th, 2023 AT 1:00PM IN SENATE BUDGET & TAX
and will be streamed online. You you can watch it at the MGA website. If you would like to join us in advocating for this bill here are some things you can do.
- FORM LETTER FOR BUDGET & TAX - Some of you asked what your school communities can do to help leading up to the hearing. I put together a short form letter that can be easily personalized and emailed off to the members of Budget & Tax. I included the names, emails, and info on each Senator on B&T at the top of the document and the letter is at the bottom. Feel free to download it and make it your own. You can share this with anyone you think would want to be involved!
- INTEREST IN TESTIMONY - Please complete this quick form if you or someone in your space is interested in providing testimony. This form is just for MAPCS and does NOT register you for testimony. We are looking for anyone interested in giving written OR oral testimony for March 7th. Keep in mind that if our bill makes it out of the Senate, it will be heard in Appropriations and we will need people for that hearing, as well. We would love at least five students, teachers, experts, and advocates to speak in support of SB0646.
- REGISTER FOR TESTIMONY - To be eligible to submit written or oral testimony for any legislation, you must create an MyMGA account. We cannot register you for testimony and this must be done by the participant. The linked document walks you through the process of submitting written testimony and also signing up to give oral testimony. We would love as much written testimony as possible! You would indicate "Favorable" as your position on SB0646. The portal for submitting testimony and registering will be open MONDAY, MARCH 6th from 8:00am-3:00pm only.
- HANDOUT ON SB0646 - Please feel free to use this to craft testimony, share with your family members and communities.

NJHS Selection Procedure
The National Junior Honor Society chapter of Chesapeake Math & IT Academy North Middle School is a duly chartered and affiliated chapter of this prestigious national organization. Membership is open to those students who meet the required standards in five areas of evaluation: scholarship, service, leadership, character, and citizenship.
Students are selected for membership by a majority vote of a five-member principal-appointed faculty council, which bestows this honor upon qualified students on behalf of the faculty of our school each October and March.
Students in grades seven and eight are eligible for membership each October. Sixth-grade students are eligible in March. A student must have a cumulative GPA of 3.3 or better on a 4.0 scale and the minimum required Student Service Learning (SSL) hours based on their grade level.
6th Grade – 3 Hours
7th Grade – 8 Hours
8th Grade – 16 Hours
Those students who meet this criterion are invited to complete a Candidate Form that provides the faculty council with information regarding the candidate’s leadership and service.
The faculty council uses two forms of input to evaluate a candidate's character. First, school disciplinary records are reviewed. Second, members of the faculty are solicited for input regarding their professional reflections on a candidate’s service activities, character, and leadership.
Any solicited faculty input and all Candidate Forms are carefully reviewed by the faculty council to determine membership. A majority vote of the council is necessary for selection. Candidates are notified regarding selection or non-selection according to a predetermined schedule.
Following notification, a formal induction ceremony is held at the school to recognize all the newly selected members. Once inducted, new members are required to maintain the same level of performance (or better) in all four criteria that led to their selection.

Aid for the Ukrainian Landmine Victims
For a portion of this summer, I will be acting as a US volunteer for Mission Kharkiv, a Ukrainian organization in support of the civilian citizens of Ukraine who have been affected by the invasion of Russia. As you may have seen in the news, much of the infrastructure in Ukraine has been damaged or destroyed. As a result, many civilian citizens are suffering greatly from a lack of resources and services. A main source of the suffering is injured civilians who lack access to medical supplies and services. Many of those injured have been hurt by landmines and booby traps placed by Russian combatants. We, as an organization, are looking for any and all donations to supply supplies and services for those civilians injured.
Below is the list of items we are trying to gather for the 100 kits needed to support emergency medical personnel responding to landmine victims.
I will be there training newly recruited medical responders on how to use the kits to aid injured civilians. If you are able to donate any of these materials it would be life-changing to those who need aid in this terrible time. I will maintain a box in my office for donated items from the list below. Please give if you can. Thanks.
