Dear Eatonville Community,

Happy Heart’s Month! As I thought about this month I went several directions and landed on “take no heart for granted”.

Attached to this letter is a picture of a little boy named Hudson. Hudson is standing proudly with the EHS football team. The team has totally wrapped their arms around him. Hudson’s journey is the story of waiting for a heart. Sometimes we take our heart for granted because it works just fine but when it doesn't, life turns upside down. Video linked here.

Sometimes we think everything is ok and we miss a heart that is hurting. February is that month that can remind us to look for those hearts. This is when we look for ways to spread kindness. Our elementary schools all have monthly activities around “character traits” that help students to navigate school and life while learning to get along with others. Small acts of kindness can fill the hearts of others in ways we may never know.

Finally we need to think about our own heart health. Our teachers present lessons on staying active and eating healthy. The Power Up program allows kids to accumulate miles in a running program. The students earn “toe tokens” that they wear proudly on a lanyard. The miles are celebrated in different ways depending on the school. Jump Rope for Heart is a WES yearly event. At the middle school level an active lifestyle is promoted by exposing the students to all kinds of activities from which they can choose that can become a lifelong physical activity. Students at the high school have PE requirements and a robust weights program. Students are actively encouraged to be part of the many programs available in and outside of school whether it be sports, cheer and dance.

Please use February as a reminder to take good care of yourself and also to reach out to spread kindness. Pay it forward!

Does your child perform at significantly advanced academic levels? Consider referring them for Highly Capable Services by submitting a referral. Referral forms will be available using the link below.

Learning characteristics could include:

• Analytical thinker
• Accelerated learner
• Advanced language speaker
• Self-motivated

The Highly Capable program referral window will be open The referral window will be open from Feb. 1-March 15, 2023.

Anyone (parents, teachers, community, etc.) can refer a student to be tested for potential qualification for next year's highly capable programs. Students from Kindergarten - 7th grade can be referred. Referred students will be tested in the school building in March and April. Results will be sent home through postal mail to families by the end of the school year.

Second grade students will participate in a Highly Capable Universal Screener the month of January/February and therefore do not need to be referred to be considered for services.

Are you interested in serving as a parent representative on the Highly Capable Program Advisory Committee for Eatonville School District? The committee aides in developing, monitoring, implementing, and evaluating the district's Highly Capable/Advancement Placement Program plan. The committee ensures compliance with state laws and administrative codes governing the Highly Capable Program, including equitable identification and makes recommendations, as needed. The committee will meet 4 times throughout the school year. The first meeting was held on January 4th.

Our second meeting will be held Wednesday, March 1st, 2023. The meeting will be held in the High School Library from 5pm-6pm. Do you have a child who will be 5 years old by August 31st, 2023? If so, please consider registering him or her for kindergarten starting February 1st.

Students who are registered by March 1st will receive a Kindergarten Readiness Incentive.

👉Tuesday, February 7th is the last day of Quarter Two and Semester One. There is a half day for all students to allow teachers time to work on Report Cards.

⏰All schools will begin at normal time and will release three hours earlier than normal.

🚌Buses will drop students off at their bus stops three hours earlier than normal in the afternoon.

February 1st marks the start of Black History Month also known as African American History Month.

Bodie Turner took first place in the Men’s Open Pro Division at the Lancaster Archery Classic Championship in Pennsylvania. This win was after shooting a perfect 660 in the qualifying rounds and keeping his top seed going into the shoot offs after the elimination rounds. Bodie is also the first person to shoot a 660 twice as well is in back-to-back years.
