Notes from Nurse G
Sleep
Early morning routines can be rough for both adults and students. It can be even harder on students, and affect their whole day, when they do not have enough sleep. According to the National Sleep Foundation school age children, ages 6-13 should get 9-11 hours of sleep a night. The younger the student, the more sleep they need. This allows their brain and body to rest, helping them to stay healthy and to increase their performance and able to fight germs.
Flu/Cold/Illness
Flu season is here early, and the county’s flu count is on the rise. When students wake up not feeling well in the morning it can be hard to decide if they are well enough to go to school. On the school nurse page of New Hope’s website, there is a section titled “Is your child too sick for school?” to help you answer those questions. A link to the page is also located here. If your student tests positive for any contagious illness’ (ie Flu, Strep, Imetigo, Novovirus, Mono, Fifth’s Disease, Hand, Foot, & Mouth etc) please notify your student’s teacher and Nurse G.
Health Conditions & Medications
If your child has a health condition, or medication, that may require additional support while he/she is at school please make sure all necessary healthcare action plans have been completed and brought up to the school. You will find all forms needed on the school nurse page of the New Hope website or by clicking here. Please have these filled out completely and returned to me as soon as possible so that we may make sure your child receives the continuity of care that he/she deserves. If your student requires medication to be kept at school, a Request for Administration of Medication form (1 for each medication) must also be completed. If your child has a condition that does not fall into a specific form please use the Individual Health Care Plan. In addition, please note most forms require both a physician’s and the parent/guardian’s signature.
Please be aware that any medication brought to the school should be done by the parent/guardian, no student is permitted to carry medication to or from school. Tylenol, Motrin, cough drops, lozenges, and sunscreen are all considered medications.
As always if you have any questions please do not hesitate to contact me.
