Jerabek Weekly Newsletter
August 22, 2023 - First Day of School!
FIRST DAY OF SCHOOL UPDATE!
Welcome to Jerabek Elementary School! Our administration, teachers, and staff are looking forward to partnering with you as we prepare all our students for the next steps in their educational journey.
The Jerabek staff has been preparing our school and our classrooms for a great first day, despite the mess left by Hurricane Hilary! If you missed the communication from Superintendent Lamont Jackson's weekend communication regarding the postponement of school click here.
Start of School Year Information!
Give yourself plenty of time to get to school. There is a lot of traffic and limited parking on the streets. If you live close enough to the school we highly suggest you walk. The front door and the back gate will be open. Students will line up on their classroom numbers on the blacktop near their classrooms / buildings. There will be people to help you find where you need to go. (See map). Please be safe...we fully understand there will be delays due to traffic the first week of school!
CLASS LISTS:
Classroom assignments went out on Thursday, 8/17 (UTK-K) and Friday, 8/18 (1st-5th) by email for those who have enrolled by Friday AM (8/18).
ENROLLMENT NUMBERS:
San Diego Unified School District reviews all renrollment numbers the third week of school to adjust staffing. If third Friday numbers decrease sites may lose teachers and if enrollment numbers increase sites may have an increased teacher allocation. Jerabek is currently over our enrollment projection. This may result in an increase in our teacher allocation. Currently, our classrooms are full and we currently have combo classrooms. An increase will allow for equitable class sizes.
For the first three weeks, all classroom placements are tentative until enrollment numbers are reviewed.
TEACHER REQUESTS:
Each year we receive several emails from parents requesting specific teachers. Please understand that teachers spend hours creating new classes. When creating classrooms we prioritize things such as academic balance, classroom/student dynamics, and opportunities for growth and support. Our Jerabek staff is committed to providing absolute excellence for every child as we honor and value all students' dynamic needs. Please know that unless we made an error in placement, i.e. placing a 1st grade student in a 2nd grade class, we will not be making any classroom changes during the first three weeks of the school year.
UTK & KINDERGARTEN 1ST WEEK SCHEDULE:
UTK and Kindergarten will be on a modified minimum day schedule with dismissal at 12:25 PM each day. All UTK and Kindergarten classrooms will resume a regular schedule beginning Monday, August 28th.
BEFORE SCHOOL:
Students may arrive any time after 8:15 a.m. unless they are participating in the morning SAY program.
Play Structures: We ask that children and their siblings not play on playground equipment in the morning before school begins. When students arrive they are to go to the field (when running club starts), breakfast in the cafeteria, or head to their classroom line.
Breakfast is served in the cafeteria for free. Students may sit in the cafeteria if they are eating breakfast. Once they are finished, they must head to their classroom line or the field. If your student is eating breakfast please plan ahead to ensure they are finished by the time school begins.
The start date of Running Club is yet to be determined.
AFTER SCHOOL:
Students are released by their teachers at 3:05 p.m. each day except on Thursday and all other minimum days when students are released at 12:25 p.m. Please pick your child up according to the dismissal map. Please plan ahead!
TRAFFIC SAFETY:
Campus safety is Jerabek's top priority. Teachers, support staff, school police services, and community organizations work together to prevent, prepare, and respond to emergency situations. CAMPUS SAFETY INCLUDES TRAFFIC SAFETY...THE DROP-OFF AND PICK-UP OF STUDENTS!
Click here for the Traffic Safety Page.
EARLY PICK UP:
If you need to pick up your child early, please plan ahead. If you call the office ahead of time or send a note, we will have you child ready for pick up at the specified time. We understand that unforseen early pick-up is necessary. If you are able, call ahead to allow us 15 minutes to locate your child (especially at recess and lunch times). Please be mindful that your child will be waiting for your arrival. We do not want your child waiting for an extended period of time. Ensure that you have your ID for sign-out!
Thank you for your consideration and patience!
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is a Jerabek focus this year! All California schools are funded based on ADA - Average Daily Attendance. Prompt and regular attendance is important at all times. When your child must be absent for any reason, please report the absence using this Google Form or call the office at (619) 605-1700 (Press 1) by 9:00 a.m. every day of non-attendance, giving the exact reason for the absence. Contact Susan Gallego at sgallego2@sandi.net with any questions.
Thank you for your support!
IMMUNIZATIONS
All students must be up to date with their immunizations prior to the first day of school. The office must have a copy of complete vaccination records. If your child is not up to date with their CA Immunizations, they will not be able to attend school on the first day.
FOOD IN CLASSROOMS
Due to a high assortment of student food restrictions, food will not be allowed for birthday celebrations. Occasionally your classroom teacher may plan an educational experience in the classroom that may involve food. Teachers will work closely with parents, our school nurse, and health technician to ensure all dietary allergies and restrictions are being followed.

Jerabek Park Improvements

Family Faculty Organization of Jerabek Elementary School
The Family Faculty Organization of Jerabek Elementary School, or FFO, is an organization similar to a PTA, made up of parents, community members, and staff who work together to provide students with added enrichment to their existing curriculum. Everyone who has a child at Jerabek is automatically a member of the FFO.
The FFO bridges the annual gap on hundreds of thousands of dollars in funding that is not given to school, teachers, and families due to service area’s median incomes. 97 cents of every dollar donated to the FFO goes directly back into programs and services for Jerabek Elementary families.
Jerabek will work closely with the FFO to streamline & align communications and increase accessibility. Our weekly newsletter will always include the button below, Jerabek FFO Newsletter, for a direct link to current FFO information.
