CEPS FACULTY INVITED TO ATTEND ALABAMA LEARNING EXCHANGE EVENT
The Alabama Learning Exchange (ALEX) recently hosted an event titled "Exploring Today’s Classrooms," and it was quite the educational experience! Professors from all over the state came together, eager to soak up insights from presentations by the Office of School Improvement, MTSS, Alabama Technology in Motion, and ALEX. They even got a Sphero Robot as a surprise gift! After lunch, they visited classrooms at Saks Elementary, Weaver Elementary, Alexandria Middle School, and Weaver High School. Professors selected to attend were Dr. Teresa Gardner, Dr. Russell Hammack, Dr. Ahmad Alhammouri, and Mrs. Aimee Weathers.
TECHNOLOGY IN MOTION
Dr. Melissa Shields, State Assistant Superintendent, Mr. Jeff Norris, Outstanding Alabama Teacher of the Year, along with Mrs. Leigh Twigg, Education Specialist from the Office of School Improvement, & Ms. Valerie Curtis, ATIM, showed tremendous support and love to our region's newest teachers. The theme for the day was inspired by Ron Clark's "Move Your Bus” and we can tell you- these teachers are RUNNERS!
STUDENTS TAKE FIRST PLACE IN HOMECOMING COOKOFF!
Congratulations to Briar Fowler and Trey Landman! They won the first JSU Dining Services Homecoming Cook off and represented the JSU College of Education and Professional Studies Career Technical Education and Professional Studies Department! They competed against another student team in a “Chopped” style competition. There were five ingredients that had to be used. Scallops, roasted red pepper, spinach, sweet potato, and bacon. The scallops were placed on sliced sweet potatoes and covered in brown sugar bacon bits, and a salad of spinach tossed in balsamic vinaigrette with roasted red peppers, bacon, and garlic. YUM!
HOMECOMING CELEBRATIONS!
Celebrating the past, present, and future at Jax State's Homecoming! Thanks to our creative staff member, Alicia Parton, for her museum walk through YEARS of JSU excellence. Several other staff members helped bring the idea to life! We were awarded second place in the decorating competition!
A great time was had by all as the CEPS combined with the Child Development Center for fun in the Homecoming Parade! It's great to be a Gamecock!

STUDENT SPOTLIGHT -
MR. BRIAR FOWLER
My name is Briar Fowler and I am from Oneonta, Alabama. I graduated in 2020 from Appalachian High School, and graduated from Snead State Community College in 2022 with my associate in science. I currently work as a substitute teacher for the Blount County Board of Education and a student worker at the JSU CDC. I belong to a wonderful, blended family, which includes my parents, sister, brother, and myself. My brother and sister are both married and have the most amazing children. I have a lot of hobbies, but my main one is Boy Scouts of America. I have been a part of the Boy Scouts of America since I was nine, and through my time have accomplished a lot of different things. I earned my Eagle Scout rank in 2018 and earned 3 palms along with the rank. I recently obtained the vigil honor in the Order of the Arrow, which is the scouting honor society. I have helped several youths obtain their Eagle Scout rank as well, which is one of my greatest accomplishments. I just completed my Wood Badge training and will obtain my beads this coming April. I am here at JSU to obtain a degree in Family and Consumer Sciences Education, and I am set to graduate in the spring of 2024. The main reason I chose this particular sector of FCS is mostly due to the fact that I loved Family and Consumer Sciences in high school and wanted to continue to learn within the field and show other people how wonderful it is. One of my main career goals is I want to be able to see how what I teach impacts my future students for the rest of their lives and how they can become successful while using what they learned in my class.
FACULTY SPOTLIGHT -
DR. CHRISTI TRUCKS!
Dr. Christi Trucks is the Department Head of Career Technical Education and Professional Studies (formerly FCS). Dr. Trucks began teaching at JSU in August 2015. Now in her ninth year, she is excited to usher in the next phase of FCS as the department undergoes a name change, welcomes three new faculty members in library media and instructional technology, and has a fantastic new space in Pod 1 at the CEPS Complex. The Pod contains a new kitchen lab with five kitchen stations and a sewing lab. Both are equipped with new state-of-the-art equipment to provide students with the tools they need to be successful in their future professions. In addition to the space in Pod 1, the department also has a new merchandising lab classroom and a commercial kitchen in the former lunchroom space, complete with new equipment and space to expand current culinary offerings.
In 2022, Dr. Trucks led the initiative to relocate the Child Development Center to the new CEPS Complex. The CDC now offers year-round childcare for infants through three-year-olds. Dr. Trucks wrote and received three Alabama First Class Pre-K Classroom Grants for the CDC enabling the CDC to prepare fifty-four four-year-olds for kindergarten. If she is not in her office, most likely, she is at the CDC enjoying the children!
Dr. Trucks and her husband, Wayne, live in Birmingham. They have two boys, Jack and Gann. Gann is a freshman in college. Jack lives in DC and is getting married in April. Her two dogs, Cooper and Chewy, are getting a lot more attention now that they are the only children at home!
Dr. Trucks is excited about the future of the CTEPS department and the College of Education and Professional Studies. "Our new facilities are evidence of the support we have from the administration to continue to develop the best educators and professionals in the state. The possibilities for CTEPS are endless. I can't wait for our programs' dreams to come true!"
