Principals' Greeting
Hiteon Community,
To this day, some of my closest friends were made while volunteering at my son and daughter’s school. There is something amazing that happens when a community gets together to plan and execute an event for hundreds of families. The feeling of accomplishment comes when families arrive and leave with excitement after gathering with friends and neighbors. The recent family PTC events (Movie Night and Breakfast Club) were no different. A HUGE thank you to the volunteers that made these events a big success. Thank you, also, to the families that were able to make it to these events. Your participation as a community is outstanding!!!
For parents that are wondering how they can participate in volunteering, please contact our volunteer coordinator at:volcoord@hiteonptc.org Additional information about how to become a member of the Hiteon volunteer team can be found here. Your time and energy will be appreciated and the memories and relationships you will form will last much longer than the events.
Wishing you a wonderful weekend!

Immunization Exclusion Day February 15
Parents or guardians will receive a letter in early February if their child's immunization records show that he or she hasn't received the required vaccinations. Children won't be able to attend school or child care starting February 15, if their records on file show missing immunizations.
The Beaverton School-Based Health Center and the Merlo School-Based Health Center are both resources for families in the Beaverton School District to get immunizations

ATTENDANCE MATTERS
HITEON'S DAILY SCHEDULE
7:45 - Doors open & Cafeteria opens for breakfast
8:00 - School promptly begins
2:35 - Dismissal
Attendance is very important to student success!
According to BSD policy absences that are not medical in nature, such as vacations, will be marked as unexcused absence.
Tardy: School begins promptly at 8:00am.
Students that are not seated at their desk at 8:00am are considered tardy.
Unless they are in the cafeteria having breakfast. Unfortunately, this means that students that are in vehicles in the parking lot are still considered late if they enter the building at 8:01am.
Early Arrival: For your child’s safety, students must NOT arrive at school before 7:45am there is no adult supervision prior to 7:45.
Dismissal: Again, for student safety, all students must be picked up from school at dismissal time 2:35pm. There is no supervision after 2:35. Unless the student is involved in a supervised after-school activity. Students who stay on school property past dismissal of 2:35pm must have parent supervision.

Is your child too sick for school
We would like to remind parents about our guidelines for determining whether or not a student should come to school if they're ill. Please remember to visit our COVID-19 Protocols Information and Too Sick for School webpage for information about when to keep kids home from school.
If a student becomes ill during the school day, the student must go to the school's health room to be evaluated and then signed out by a parent/guardian. Students should not use their personal devices to communicate illness with parents directly. Please remind your students to inform their teacher and to visit the health room.

Love the Bus Week
Join us as we celebrate the big yellow school bus February 13-17th. During Love the Bus week we invite parents, students, and staff to take a moment to thank Hiteon's bus drivers.
- We will be creating a paper banner that students will be able to write little notes on and will have it out on display on Monday (hopefully it's not raining).
- On Wednesday, we'll have hot coffee and breakfast treats ready for their arrival.
- We'll have students write thank you notes throughout the week and then deliver to our drivers on Friday 2/17.
- Students will be decorating boxes during Maker Space time and all the thank you notes will be collected in them to deliver to drivers.
We invite our Hiteon community to also join in fun by showing their appreciation to their bus driver during the week upon pickup or drop off.
On Wednesday, 2/15, all elementary students who ride their school bus will also receive a prize!

Whether you walk or bike a few blocks to school or close to a mile, your active commute is good for your heart, your whole body and it’s invigorating and fun! With colder winter weather, children spend less time playing outside, but a nice brisk walk or bike ride to school will help achieve their recommended 60 minutes of moderate exercise every day. This will help prevent childhood obesity and support healthy bones. Walking and biking to school is also a great way for kids to get the physical activity needed for healthy minds. Kids who are more physically active have better academic performance.
Studies are beginning to show that exposure to nature and free outdoor play can reduce stress and relieve ADHD symptoms. If that isn’t enough to get you out of your car, think about the air quality around a school when dozens of parents sit in idling cars while their children jump out. Air pollution has contributed to childhood asthma rates doubling between 1980 and the mid-1990s. Asthma rates remain at historically high levels and cause 14 million missed school days every year. Walking and biking to school is healthy for kids, healthy for communities, and healthy for the planet.
