DHS student artist wins contest to paint Genesee County Road Commission snow plow
DHS student Lucy Stevens was the winner of the high school division in the Genesee County Road Commission's "Paint the Plow" contest.
Students from schools across the county submitted artwork, which was posted on social media. Winners were determined by the amount of votes cast in the comments section.
Davison High School Art Teacher Mr. Ryan Kelsey said the Genesee County Road Commission is expected to drop off a plow soon for Lucy and his sixth hour to paint.
Homecoming Week Now a Happy Memory
Homecoming may be over but the memories remain in this video (link below).
We also want to send props out to all of our students - we received many comments about how respectful our Cardinals were during the parade and festivities. Way to show your Cardinal pride!
Also, congratulations to Homecoming Queen Allie Widmann, Miss Congeniality Leilah Russell, Homecoming King Conner Woodruff and Mr. Congeniality Buddy Banks Williams.
At Davison High School, the Student Council announced that Mrs. Laurie Heath's first hour class won the door decorating contest with Ms. Turina Zimmer's first hour receiving a special honorable mention for its interactive door. While Spirit Week tallies were very close, Mr. Garth Starr's first hour won with 91 percent participation.

DMS students participate in Vocal Arts Day
Vocal music singers from Davison Middle School joined student musicians from surrounding schools as part of Vocal Arts Day yesterday.
The event, co-managed by Davison Middle School Vocal Music Teacher Ms. Michelle Wilson and Mt. Morris Middle School Vocal Music Teacher Mr. Steve Holovach, hosted nine middle school choir programs, including Milan Middle School, at the Swartz Creek Center for Performing Arts.
"Milan Middle School from District 12 also visited, bringing their fabulous director, Mrs. Shayla Powell, to clinic and inspire over 300 students in grades six through eight," Ms. Wilson said.
Students enjoyed team building, rehearsal, lunch together and closed the day by livestreaming a performance of "The Water is Wide," (arr. Dilworth) and "Play for Me a Simple Melody" (Berlin, arr. Shaw)."
Students represented their school by the color T-shirt they wore.
"I'm very proud of how our DMS kids did at Vocal Arts Day," Ms. Wilson said. "I asked them to be kind, mature, meet new people, have fun and sing their hearts out and I saw all of these things happening!"

Central classroom plans Soctober event
Students in Mr. Robert Schleicher's third grade classroom at Central Elementary hope to knock the socks off a fundraising effort that begins Monday, October 4.
Students will be collecting socks during the month of October, calling their project Soctober. Socks will be collected through Thursday, October 26, the last day of school before Intersession I.
"Socks are the number one requested item at homeless shelters and 600,000 Americans are currently homeless," said Mr. Schleicher.
Socks must be new and in the package. Donations can be dropped off at Central Elementary or The Cardinal Center administrative offices.
Schleicher said the collected socks will be donated for Voices for Children in Flint.
"A student's family has a connection to that shelter, plus I like their focus being on kids," he said.
Holiday Assistance Applications now available
It's hard to believe but the holiday season is right around the corner. As Davison residents, we are fortunate to live in a community that has a multitude of service-minded groups. These organizations are generous in many ways, especially when it comes to helping children.
Each year, several of these community service clubs offer to help students whose families may be experiencing some temporary financial setbacks due to the tough economic times. These groups often donate a food basket, clothing and/or gifts. These items are meant to assist you in what you are already providing for your family.
Our staff does its best to be helpful yet at the same time not offend parents who wish to have their privacy protected. If you would like to have your family's name referred to a community service group that may help to meet your family's needs, please complete the application on the other side of this letter. You can be assured that our local service groups will treat any information they receive with the utmost care in order to avoid embarrassment to a child or a family.
Please note that applications for assistance need to be returned by Thursday, October 26, 2023. After this date, you will need to contact an agency directly for assistance. Your child's school counselor can provide a list of names and phone numbers.
Completed applications can be sent to school with your child, you can personally deliver it to your child's school or you can mail it to Att: Sandy Potter, Hahn Intermediate School, 500 S. Dayton St., Davison MI 48423.
