Corbett High School Newsletter (Vol. 2, Issue 10)
Letter from the Principal
Dear Corbett Families and Students,
The school year is picking up momentum. The leadership club has over 60 students engaged in planning activities for the student body, including the first assembly, (October 12th), and the Homecoming Monster Mash dance, (October 20th). In addition, they are taking on a community service role this year. They are starting with providing “event clean-up” services after home athletic events, with a student-led team of volunteers.
Student super-fans continue to be the best student section we have seen, earning positive comments from opposing team coaches and parents. We plan to celebrate our school spirit with a small surprise for all students during the assembly. (The small surprise is funded by a Communicare grant, another student-led community service group.)
The next Principal Chat will be in-person, on October 18th, from 6:00 pm-6:45 pm in the high school commons. The agenda will be to have a discussion about student performance data as part of our accreditation process. Please let me know if you are interested in participating by October 17th, so I can prepare enough data packets. RSVP at kchildress@corbett.k12.or.us.

Corbett Welcomes Exchange Students
Claudia Perini Pascual-Trenor, Spain
Corbett High School is hosting three exchange students this year. Claudia Perini Pascual -Trenor, hosted by the Capitano family, is joining Corbett from Spain. In her free time, Claudia likes to hang out with friends, go shopping, travel, cook and do things with family. "I wanted to do my exchange year here because I wanted to know what it's like being in an American high school in real life and because I wanted to learn more about the culture, since I was little I have wanted to come here," explained Perini Pascual-Trenor when asked why she wanted to study in the United States. "I miss my family and my life there, [but] I'm looking forward to meeting new people and traveling around the U.S.," she shared. According to host parent Alice Capitano, "We chose to host Claudia because we wanted to have an older role model for our children, to show them how brave an exchange student is and how much can be gained from overcoming some discomfort and being adventurous in life...It has been only a few weeks and, already, it has enriched our lives and home and we are quite certain that we have friends in Barcelona for life."
Johannes Aspvik, Norway
Johannes Aspvik, hosted by the Leith-Ross family, is from Norway. Aspvik explained, "I wanted a year as an exchange student in the US because I wanted to learn more about the culture, teach people about my culture, and it sounded really fun. I am looking forward to different social events like homecoming and prom. In my free time I like to do anything. If anyone asks me to go out I always say yes." Acording to Aspvik's host parent, Julie Leith-Ross, "It's been really fun to be a tourist in our own state as we've shared experiences with Johannes - - in the month since his arrival, we've been to the top of Multnomah Falls, the shore of Crater Lake, experienced the Oregon State Fair and a college football game, and eaten a variety of 'American' foods from burgers to Hawaiian grill to Rice Krispie Treats. Sharing these experiences with someone new is a lot of fun for him and for us!" She continued, "It's also been fun to hear about how similar and different Norway is in terms of food, people, communication styles, dating, sports, school, etc. Johannes brought some Norwegian candies and cheese for us to try, and has cooked Norwegian tacos for our family (highly recommend!)."
Carl Holst, Norway
Norway is sharing a second student with Corbett, Carl Holst (hosted by the Fredericks family). When asked why they wanted to host an exchange student, host parent Leah Fredericks explained, "We love to travel and we also live in one of the most beautiful places in the country and decided to host an exchange student to bring some of the world home to us while being able to share all of the great things about the PNW. We love the school district and also the athletic program, which is so welcoming to students of all skill levels, and felt like the opportunities for an exchange student to get involved were high and the smaller school size would make it easier to quickly make new friends."
Language Proficiency Testing
Speak another language? Earn credit!
Can you understand, read, write and speak in a language other than English? If this is you, Corbett is offering an assessment for you to demonstrate your other language skills for High School language credit. If shown to be proficient, these credits could potentially fulfill your language requirements for graduation. The languages offered by STAMP are: Arabic, Chinese, English, French, German, Hebrew, Italian, Japanese, Spanish, Spanish-Heritage, Russian, and Korean. The next round of testing will be offered Friday October 20th. Please contact our language Specialist Melissa Davis at Mdavis@corbett.k12.or.us to sign up.
You can also earn a Seal of Biliteracy by earning a 4+ on an AP Language Exam (for example, AP Spanish) and passing the 11th grade reading and writing state tests. Keep taking those Spanish classes!
Oregon Tradeswomen’s Pre-Apprenticeship Training Program
Considering skilled trades after graduation?
With a focus on apprenticeship, Oregon Tradeswomen’s Pathways to Success program offers a Trades and Apprenticeship Career Class (TACC); a 192-hour apprenticeship and employment readiness training program to prepare adult job-seekers for a career in the skilled construction trades. Programs start in the summer and fall after graduation. TACC introduces program participants to a variety of skilled trades through field trips, guest speakers, hands-on work days, and trades-specific training opportunities. The participants also learn about registered apprenticeship; an “earn while you learn model” which is often the next step to career pathways in the construction industry. Oregon Tradeswomen’s training program is offered at no cost to job seekers. Individuals successfully completing the Oregon Bureau of Labor and Industries certified program receive a certificate of completion recognized by industry registered apprenticeship training programs and employers.
Oregon Tradeswomen career counselors assist TACC graduates with their job search and application to apprenticeship training programs and employers. Oregon Tradeswomen career counselors also offer individualized employment counseling throughout the entire course of the graduate’s trades career.
Eligibility Requirements: 18+ years old, high school diploma (or equivalent), women and gender minorities, able to pass a drug test.

Materials and Manufacturing in Action
Sheet Metal Boxes
The first-year materials and manufacturing class finished making sheet metal boxes. Students started with a flat piece of metal and a template they created before cutting the metal. Students then bent the hems and flanges and used a hand seamer to secure the flanges . Finally, they had to spot weld or pop rivet the box together and polish, sand and debur as needed. (Ally Schimel's work is pictured first).
Football
JV played on Tuesday night at home. Dominic Bustamante and Hunter Hergert both had strong games. Bustamante scored two touchdowns and Elliott scored once. Jaxson Jendritza also scored while running the ball. On defense, Richard Bjugan, Henry Carey, Hunter Hergert and Beck Chandler played well, including several sacks and two interceptions from Carey. Varsity played on Saturday night against Gaston and lost 0-42. Although the coaches described it as a tough loss, they did want to highlight several players. Turner Van Hee and Hunter Hergert played well on offense, and, on defense, Armin Mehanovic and Turner Van Hee. On Special Teams - Maddox Leigh-Ross and Gunner Fullerton.
