Tiger Tales from Sanborn School
Week of September 26, 2022
Dear Sanborn Families,
Sanborn has had an exciting first month of school! It is hard to believe that we will soon welcome the month of October. Instruction in all areas is well underway; including instruction in social-emotional learning. Congratulations to the August Golden Paw Award Winners: Ms. King's 5th grade class and Mrs. Krause's 1st grade class! Golden Paws are awarded to an entire class for collectively following our Tiger Traits: Be Respectful, Be Responsible, and Be Safe. Golden Paws are submitted to the office and we choose a primary and intermediate winner each month. The class earns a special reward like an extra recess, extra gaga ball time, or a fun indoor activity when the weather changes. We are looking forward to choosing the September Golden Paw winners!
Every Friday, we have a post called "Sanborn Snapshots" on Facebook. If you use social media, please like Gray M. Sanborn Elementary School so that you can see our weekly post. The post highlights the week's exciting events and learning opportunities that are happening around the school. This week, we had a special post highlighting the event with the Chicago Bears on Wednesday, September 21st. Our students in grades 2-6 were able to participate in a MiniMonsters Camp that focused on building healthy habits, daily physical activity, and five non-contact football drills. The students had a blast, and our younger classrooms were able to come outside to watch and take a photo with the guest of honor: former Bears player Brandon McGowan! Overall, we had a wonderful day! Check out this link for some aerial photos of the event from one of our Sanborn parents.
Thank you for your continued support and partnership. Please reach out to us with any questions or concerns that you may have.
Warmly,
Kate Arenberg, Principal

Building Independence in your K/1 Child - Your child should be able to…
Tie their own shoes.
Share their folder/binder with you nightly (please take out any papers that don’t need to be returned).
Have positive social interactions (ex…say hello, good morning, excuse me and I’m sorry, listen and take turns when talking, compliment others).
Accept disappointment.
(ex…winning and losing, taking turns, coping with redirection)
5.Read for 10 minutes every night.
Practicing all of these skills will help build independence.

Safety Drill Information
Dear Parents and Guardians,
District 15 is strongly committed to school safety. Our goal is to not only provide a safe environment, but to also prepare our school community to know how to respond if/when a crisis arises. Each year, schools are required by Illinois School Code to conduct the following drills:
- Three evacuation drills. One of the three evacuation drills must be supervised by the fire department.
- One bus evacuation drill.
- One severe weather/shelter-in-place drill.
- Two law enforcement (lockdown) drills. One of these two law enforcement drills must be a staff-initiated lock-down. The schools also conduct an annual drill review meeting with principals and representatives from police and fire departments to continuously improve each school’s readiness to respond to an emergency and/or crisis situation.
House Bill 2400 (The School Safety Drill Act) states:
- All lockdown drills will be announced to all school personnel and students prior to the commencement of the drill.
- Schools will provide sufficient information and notification to parents and guardians in advance of any lockdown drill that involves the participation of students.
- Schools will provide parents and guardians an opportunity to exempt their child for any reason from participating in the walk-through lockdown drill.
- Schools will provide alternative safety education and instruction related to an active threat or active shooter event to students who do not participate in a walk-through lockdown drill to provide them with essential information, training, and instruction through less sensorial safety training methods.
In addition to these drills, D15 also practices a Relocation Drill every other year with students and staff. In the event a school had an emergency situation that required us to evacuate a building (i.e. fire, water main break, gas leak, etc.) and we needed to move students to an alternate location for the remainder of the school day, we would take our students to the relocation site. The schools “relocate” to a relocation site via bus or walking (depending on the location of the relocation site).
Building administrators will notify families of upcoming drills at least one week in advance of the drill. If you prefer your child does NOT participate in the yearly required lockdown drills, please complete this form. Please submit one form for each of your children you are opting out.

Estimados padres y tutores:
