Update from Superintendent Shuldiner
Dear Lansing School District Community,
As always, it is a pleasure to write to you all. I hope that you look forward to these Monday morning newsletters as much as I do. Today, I want to write about teamwork. This weekend, two of our three football teams, Sexton and Everett, made the playoffs. This is the first time in almost a decade that Lansing has two teams in the postseason. I want to personally congratulate all of the wonderful adults and students who made this accomplishment happen.
Football carries a huge roster, the largest of any high school team sport. To make the playoffs means that not only did our students succeed on the field but in the classroom as well. In order to field a team, week in and week out, the players need to be eligible, pass their classes, and attend school. This is one of the many reasons why we have increased our investment in our sports, health, and wellness programs since I became Superintendent. Sports are great for building teamwork, camaraderie, and physical health. But in order to play on a high school team, a student must pass their classes and attend school. If every student were on a sports team, it would mean that every student would come to school regularly and pass their classes. How amazing would that be?
Fielding a team is one thing, but making the playoffs is even more impressive. It is a complete team effort. Coaches and staff not only run the football side of the program, but they run tutoring, food, and support programs after school as well. Parents and loved ones get students to practice and get them home. And, of course, the players themselves put in hours and hours of grueling practice every week before a game. I want to give a special shout-out to the two head coaches -- Johnel Davis (Sexton) and Jaleel Canty (Everett). They have been tireless leaders of these teams, and I thank them for their service.
I know that I speak for the entire District when I say that we all wish our teams well as they head into the playoffs. Good luck!
Thank you so much for all of your incredible support of our District. Together, we will do great things for the children of Lansing.
