We Celebrate Catholic Schools Week!
From the Principal's Desk
Dear Families,
Before my arrival as principal in August of 2008, plans for expanding our school had been developed. Included within those plans were a Middle School Science Laboratory, Art Room, and Music Room. While years had passed, the dream of expanding our school still remained. On Saturday, January 9, 2016 at the State of SEAS address, construction plans were communicated. I have included a picture below from that presentation.
Late in the summer of 2016, those plans and dreams began the process of becoming a reality for our students.
On Monday, February 6, 2017, K-8 students will begin to attend classes in the Art and Music Rooms. On February 13, 2017, Middle School students will begin to attend class in the Science Laboratory.
As a result of the new construction, we will now have additional space to better accommodate existing programs. As you may know, we are in the 4th year of our implementation of the Catechesis of the Good Shepherd (CGS). We have simply outgrown our single atrium to accommodate all of the students at all of the levels. Therefore, the previous Music and Art Rooms will be replaced with the necessary additional Catechesis of the Good Shepherd atria. Moreover, we have increased Spanish to 4-days a week for all of Middle School and added 1-day per week for K-5th grade. At Middle School, the teacher has had to travel from class-to-class. Now, the previous Science Room in the Middle School POD will become the 3-8th grade Spanish Room.
I am thoroughly excited for the students!
Sincerely,
Dr. Carey W. Roybal-Benson

Personal Responsibility
One of the biggest challenges to any household or classroom is teaching children personal responsibility. How easy is it to say it’s not my fault and blame it on someone else? Personal responsibility is one of those LIFE skills that just never goes away, and carries even more importance as children enter adolescence, teen years and adulthood.
If you haven’t made it important in your home, please take time to rethink that and understand it is VITAL to character development. If children are taught personal responsibility early in their lives effectively, this will likely make growing up easier, and parenting more pleasurable and less dramatic.
Here are a few tips to remember:
1. Consequences are very important, and they can be highly motivating negatively or positively.
2. Mistakes are opportunities to learn, let children make mistakes; sometimes mistakes are the best teachers. Do explain that everyone makes mistakes, including adults.
3. When your child makes a make mistake, correct them but avoiding nagging or being overly negative. Just let the consequence follow with” I am sorry you made that choice.”
4. If your child argues, which is normal, give a short time out and discuss it later in a few minutes after they have had time to “calm down.”
5. Do be consistent with boundaries, and explain the child adults have rules in the world also and we all need to respect them.
6. As children grow older, privileges increase, and so with freedom come boundaries. It is also helpful to not only verbally tell them, but also write the rules down so they can read them every day. Teaching them to apologize, and forgive as part of growing up.
7. Reach out to community, school, or church resources by phone, email or attend a class on subjects like parenting, school events or adult help sessions. We are all life long learners. Maybe a book or video on specific subjects would help you better understand.
Most of all… MODEL responsible, productive behavior for your child to follow. It is imperative they learn coping skills at an early age.

Students self evaluate their learning to determine if they are a novice, apprentice, practitioner or expert on a given topic. Experts can teach the concept to someone else. Here is a video of a student explaining how to add fractions with unlike denominators.
