Community Update
Community Update
October 7, 2022
Hello North Rockland Families:
You may have noticed a different format as we provided District information last Friday. NRCSD will utilize the "Community Check-In" a condensed version of our update on short weeks in an effort to keep our communications fresh. The District will alter utilizing this method of communication as well as a traditional Community Update as the holiday season approaches and the academic year goes on.
Above all, these communications will continue to be as transparent as possible to ensure families stay in the know as the strong partnership between our school community and our district is essential to the success of our students.
We are excited to announce updates to our elementary report cards. Our reporting is increasing from two times a year to three times a year. You will now receive a report card on your child’s progress in December, March and June.
The new report cards have the following changes:
Easy to read language so that you can support your child at home.
Reporting student behaviors by levels that include: Outstanding, Satisfactory or Inconsistent.
A Behavior & Effort Score added to each subject area to help capture the level of effort in that subject along with students’ progress.
Report cards are more aligned in transition grades such as 3rd to 4th and 6th to 7th.
Letter grades adopted in 6th grade in core subjects (ELA, math, science and social studies) to align with 7th grade reporting practices.
Students in the Spirit and Visions programs will receive a report card tailored to the skills and learning goals of each program.
Report card grades will continue to be available through the Infinite Campus Parent Portal. If you would like to update your information on the portal, please contact central registration.
We look forward to these reporting card updates helping to foster an even greater home-school partnership.
As a reminder all North Rockland Schools are closed on Monday, October 10 for Columbus Day. Wishing our community a happy and healthy long weekend.
Join Our Cause!
October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month!
The District is asking all our students and staff to participate in the annual campaign by wearing pink to school Thursday, 10/20 to raise awareness about the impact of breast cancer. This year's Pink Out will be in honor of all those in our school community this terrible illness has affected.
Join us as we RISE together to help uplift women in need!
Volley for a Cause
In North Rockland we are blessed that we can always count on our school community to rally together!
The 2022 Volley for a Cause volleyball game will be held on October 21 at NRHS vs. Clarkstown North starting at 4:30 pm. This year we are volleying for two incredible NR Teachers with life threatening illnesses that have incurred expenses not covered by medical insurance. The official Volley for a Cause store is now open, but for a limited time. Every purchase made in the next 10 days will go directly to benefitting our educators. This cause is a powerful and inspiring opportunity to unite as a community. Let's show our support NR Strong and NR Together!
What's PANDAS?
PANS/PANDAS is a medical condition that causes an autoimmune encephalopathy, resulting in varying degrees of psychiatric symptoms, learning issues and motor coordination disruptions. PANDAS stands for Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Streptococcal Infections, or PANS-Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Syndrome. www.pandasnetwork.org. NR will be joining forces with local families to participate in the PANDAS Network shoe fundraiser. The fundraiser is to increase awareness and provide support for PANDAS Research. We'll be sharing more details regarding our upcoming "shoe drive" soon so stay tuned and save your gently used or new shoes!

IMPORTANT INFORMATION
Erin's Law ⚖️
As parents and educators, it is important to take the time to talk to our children about personal body safety. New York State passed the Erin Merryn Law, which requires all school districts to implement lessons that teach children about personal body safety. The purpose of this law is to protect children if approached by known or unknown individuals who intend to harm them.
Starting this school year, K-6 social workers will teach two lessons using the, “Play it Safe!” curriculum. These lessons ensure our K-6 students learn vital skills that will keep them safe. Students will learn the 3-part safety rule: Saying No!, Getting Away from Danger as Soon as They Can, and Telling a Trusted Adult.
Students in Grade 7-8 will participate in two grade-appropriate lessons in their health education classes. These lessons will teach them strategies to stay safe. If you want to learn more about Erin’s Law, please click here. Erin's Law Parent Notice.
Snow Day Policy ❄️
The New York State Department of Education ruled that School District’s are able to utilize the remote-learning technology implemented during the coronavirus pandemic to allow students to continue their studies on days when the snow is too heavy for them to commute to school. Some Districts across the state have adopted a policy that will eliminates traditional snow days all together, opting for a remote learning day During inclement weather. North Rockland will utilize traditional snow days until the three that our built into our calendar are exhausted. Once all of our traditional snow days have been used the District will utilize the remote option when possible.
School Breakfast/Lunch Remain Free in NR 🥪
For the past two years, every student has been eligible for free school meals, regardless of how much their parents made in Rockland County. That program expired at the end of the summer and has created confusion. In North Rockland we are proud to share that all our schools qualify for free breakfast and lunch. Our dedicated Food Service Department has worked to get all our schools eligible for the Community Eligibility Provision (CEP) for the next four years.
***Each child is entitled to receive one free breakfast and one free lunch meal per day. For additional meals students are encouraged to use My School Bucks.

Fall Windows 🍂🍁🎃
Stony Point has transitioned to fall with a little help from talented Red Raiders!
Some of our favorite places around town had their windows transformed into these stunning autumn community murals over the weekend. We love how North Rockland High Schools' Academy of Art students designed displays that capture some of the season’s magic, coziness and signature colors. Artists sketched the collaborative pieces to represent favorite hometown fall reminders like Tomkins Cove's calico cats, Stony Points' barn owls and NR’s beautiful foliage. Each image projects the heart and thoughtfulness that was put into it’s creation.
We hope you all enjoy the fall feeling the windows bring our community as you stop by our local: Kirkbride Hall, Stony Point Recreation Center, Bee's Nest Deli and Stony Point Pharmacy this season. More photos linked here.
Tunnel to Towers Foundation's 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit.
We can learn a lot from someone who remembers.
In honor of October being New York State History Month, all History classes at Fieldstone Middle School took a “field trip” this week to tour the Tunnel to Towers Foundation's 9/11 NEVER FORGET Mobile Exhibit. The exhibit is a tribute to all who lost their lives on September 11, 2001, including the 343 members of the New York City Fire Department (FDNY) who made the ultimate sacrifice and all who continue to lose their lives to 9/11-related illnesses. The high-tech, 83-foot tractor-trailer, which transforms into an 1,100 square foot exhibit, is an important tool to further educate people across the country about the events of that tragic day. NR ATHLETICS
North Rockland Football is at Home this Saturday!
The Red Raiders return home to Casarella Field at Cordisco Stadium tomorrow after having spent the last two weeks on the road. North Rockland, after a 1-2 start, have ran off two straight wins and enter today’s matchup with a 3-2 overall record. The Red Raiders notched a big RCPSAL win over Suffern (23-16) two weeks ago. They then needed a come-from-behind effort to best the Yonkers Force last Saturday. Tomorrow’s game also highlights North Rockland’s annual Homecoming Weekend and caps off the school’s “Spirit Week.”
North Rockland (3-2) vs Mamaroneck (4-0)
Heading into week six of the football season, The North Rockland Red Raiders are looking to build on their two game winning streak as they will play host to unbeaten Mamaroneck this Saturday. The Red Raiders are currently ranked #5 in Section 1, Class AA with a 3-1 League record, 3-2 Overall. Mamaroneck comes into this game with an undefeated record of 4-0 and are ranked #2 in Section 1 Class AA. This intriguing matchup will Kickoff at 1:30pm from Casarella Field at Cordisco Stadium.
"Mamaroneck is a really good, well coached football team, with a lot of hype behind them." explained NR Head Coach James Hickey "We are the underdog and rightfully so; in order to be considered a top team, you have to win the big games. This is a big game and our players are focused, prepared and ready to play with relentless effort for 4 quarters....This feels like old school North Rockland football, it should be a great game, I can't wait"

Raider Rescue 🐾
North Rockland has partner with Hi-Tor Animal Shelter to feature one dog and one cat to help them find a loving home each week. Check out the Shelter Wish List linked here. Red Raiders to the Rescue!!!
Fang Shui 😻
"Fang Shui was brought to us as a stray back in october. When she first came to us she was
pregnant and refused to leave her cardboard box. She was very skinny but after much love and
attention she has turned completely around. She is 1 and a half and still acts like a kitten at
times. She loves toys and also head rubs. She is very much the boss and lets you know when
she does and does not want to be pet. Fang Shui enjoys sleeping on her perch and starts
chirping at you once she sees you. If you are interested in adopting please fill out an application on our website Hitor.org."
Brie 🐶
"Brie is a beautiful white pittie that came in as a stray a little under a year and a half ago. She is a Hi-Tor favorite because when she comes out of her kennel she loves to give special hugs. If you happen to be lucky enough to get a special Brie hug, you know you're going to have a good day. If you are interested in adopting her please fill out an application on our website Hitor.org."
Last week's adoptable friends can be found linked here.
