Patton Turns 50!
Patton Middle School school opened its doors to staff and students as Unionville Middle School on Monday, January 29, 1973. The school celebrated this momentous occasion on Friday, January 27 in the Patton Middle School Auditorium.
The event kicked off with remarks from current Patton Principal, Dr. Steve Dissinger after which the PTO presented the school with a gift - a beautiful new podium to be used for many years to come! Former Patton Principals, Mr. Bruce Vosburgh and Mr. Tim Hoffman, and the daughter of Charles Patton, Nancy Patton also shared some remarks and memories of their time at Patton. Former students who were in 6th, 7th and 8th grade in 1973 were also in attendance to share in the celebration. The current Patton Student Council was recognized for their involvement in the festivities. Lastly, members of the school's very first Student Council were reunited in front of their photo with Mr. Patton from 1973!
At the conclusion of the program, attendees enjoyed some cake and caught up in the Patton Library. A special shout out to Patton teacher, Mr. John Walsh for organizing such a wonderful celebration!
Unionville High School Takes a Day to Reset
On January 25, 2023, Unionville High School hosted the first-ever RRR Day - a day to Reset, Recharge and Rebalance! There were more than 50 activities for students to select from throughout the day including, painting, goat yoga, cooking, basketball, nature walks, corn hole, card games, a drone obstacle course, escape rooms, blanket making, and many more.
“Our students recently completed midterms, which we know can be a stressful time for them,” said Dr. Amy Jenkins, Unionville High School Principal. “We wanted to give them a day to relax and reset before heading into the 2nd semester so they feel ready to thrive!”
As part of the day, students also participated in a presentation on Minding your Mind and a presentation by the Travis Manion Foundation. The foundation shared the incredible story of 1stLt Travis Manion, USMC, who made the ultimate sacrifice for the safety of his patrol, and encouraged students to carry on the legacy of selfless service and leadership embodied by Travis and all those who have served.
The entire day was coordinated by the Unionville High School staff. Sessions were run by teachers and staff, who were able to share a special skill, a passion or hobby, or just wanted to just lead the students in a fun activity. Outside community partners also donated their time and resources to help create this special wellness day for students.

What was School Like 100 Years Ago?

MLK Day of Service
Huskies come together to make a difference!
In honor of Martin Luther King Jr., the Hillendale school community came together to spread kindness through a day of service. There were several projects on which students and parents worked together to help others, all coordinated by the wonderful HES PTO. Get-well cards were created to send to patients at AI duPont Children’s Hospital. Surgical caps were made from pieces of fabric and will also be sent to the hospital. Additionally, bagged lunches were made for those in need and raised flower beds were constructed for the Pocopson Home! Such a great example of service by our helpful Huskies and their families!
Creating Warmth for Others in Need
Every year, the Unionville Elementary community comes together to make blankets to donate to A.I. duPont Children’s Hospital. The blankets that will be donated to the hospital provide comfort and warmth to patients in need.
Thank you to UES for their commitment to our Day of Service in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Their outstanding performance earned them a spot to compete in the PA-East Championship Tournament on January 28. They also won the Robot Design Award!
The tournament consisted of a judged presentation of a research project, as well as three rounds of gameplay, where the team worked to score points by having their robot successfully navigate challenges on the competition field.

By Bruce Adams
Unionville High School senior Aryan Abbaraju, the Daily Local News Boys Cross Country Runner of the Year, has come a long way in four years of running for the Longhorns.
A few weeks after earning a ninth-place finish at the PIAA 3A championships, Abbaraju said, “I ran this same course as a 9th grader and it was special to see how far I had come. It was great to talk to my teammates after we finished our race – we reflected on how the season had gone and felt excited about the future.”
Unionville’s Maddy Lowe is 2022 All-Area Girls Volleyball Player of the Year
By Bruce Adams
Unionville senior outside hitter and captain Maddy Lowe, the Daily Local News Girls Volleyball Player of the Year, is the only player in the distinguished history of the Longhorns volleyball program to receive all-state honors three times.
“Maddy has had a tremendous impact on the Unionville volleyball program during her four years,” said Longhorns head coach Stephanie Smith. “She played well under pressure and was trusted to score big points when the game was on the line. A large part of our program’s success over the past few seasons is due to her volleyball skills and leadership.”
Unionville’s Mary Dunigan is the DLN Girls’ Golf Player of the Year
By Neil Geoghegan
If there was ever a candidate to become a young golf prodigy, Mary Grace Dunigan sure fits the bill.
The daughter of respected PGA Teaching Professional John Dunigan, she certainly had the pedigree. But Mary Grace actually didn’t take to the game as an adolescent. She had lots of interests growing up in Kennett Square, like softball and music – she played the alto saxophone.
“Talking with her parents, they laugh as they tell the stories of Mary in a stroller while her dad was giving lessons at the driving range,” said Joe Sudimak, the girls’ golf coach at Unionville. “But not many know that she is really a latecomer to the game."
