Principal's Message
Dear West TV Families,
Welcome to the 2023-2024 school year!
This is my 5th year as principal at West TV. Prior to serving as principal at West TV, I served as principal at Errol Hassell Elementary School in the Beaverton School District and as assistant principal at Meadow Park Middle School in the Beaverton School District.
I’ve lived in Beaverton for 23 years and I’m a native Oregonian - born and raised in Corvallis. My parents met in college while attending OSU and just celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary this month. My two sisters and I also graduated from OSU - go Beavs! Before coming to work in the Beaverton School District as an administrator, I was a teacher in the Portland School District.
When I’m not working at the school, I enjoy reading and being active - each week I spend several evenings at the gym doing Zumba classes - my favorite classes to take! I have one child, my 30-year-old daughter Rachel, who graduated from Westview High School in 2011 and now resides in Los Angeles, California. She is my everything and I visit her as often as I can.
As the new school year approaches, it's important to be prepared for getting back into the swing of school. Here are a few tips to help your West TV student get ready for a successful school year:
- Establish routines: Help your student set a regular sleep schedule a few days before school begins by having them go to sleep and wake up at the same times they will need to go to sleep and wake up on a school day. Read for at least 20 minutes a day to be a step ahead.
- Make a plan for getting to school on time every day. Community building happens first thing in the morning. Be sure to be there right at 8:00 so your student feels that sense of belonging with their class.
- Ensure your student is getting plenty of sleep in order to be focused and engaged at school. At bedtime be sure to lock up all devices your student enjoys - including cell phones, apple watches, iPads and laptops. You'd be surprised how many older students admit to staying up late watching YouTube and TikTok videos.
Please take time to read all of the information in this newsletter. There are some important updates for the coming school year.
West TV is a wonderful learning community, with committed and highly qualified staff. At West TV students are exposed to a rich and rigorous curriculum. In addition to academic learning, the staff at West TV are committed to fostering an environment that creates responsible citizens in our school and community. We are all anticipating a wonderful school year and I look forward to seeing you on August 28th!

Back-to-School Picnic - Thursday 8/24 (5:30-7:00pm)
Our wonderful PTC hosts this fun event for families which has been a tradition at West TV for more than 40 years. All food is provided. Bring your blanket, lawn chairs, and enjoy time getting to know other families in our West TV Community.
Back-to-School Night – Thursday 9/7 (6:00-7:30pm)
Your child’s teacher will share grade level curriculum, homework expectations, classroom routines and procedures, and special activities. Please note Back-to-School Night is for parents/guardians only.
Do families need to buy school supplies?
Yes; however, if any of the supplies cannot be purchased, the school will provide them. You will find the school supply list here . If you purchased a school supply kit last spring, the kits have arrived and will be in your child's classroom.
What will students need to bring to school on their first day?
Students should bring a coat or jacket, water bottle, backpack, snack and lunch (if needed). Please make sure to label your students items with their name on it. This will help us when items end up in the Lost & Found.
First Day of School
Students in grades 1 through 5 will begin on Monday, August 28.
Please note: the first day of school for Kindergarten students is not the same day as students in grades 1 through 5. Kindergarten students do not come to school August 28 & 29.
August 30 - First day of school for Kindergarten students (last name starting with the letter A-L)
August 31 - First day of school for Kindergarten students (last name starting with the letter M-Z)
September 1 - First day of school for all Kindergarten students together
School start/end time
The school day begins at 8:00am and ends at 2:35pm.
Student arrival time
Students can arrive anytime between 7:45-8:00am (for safety reasons students are not allowed to arrive before 7:45am as there will be no adult supervision). Students arriving after 7:55am will go directly to class through the cafeteria. Students arriving between 7:45-7:55am will be supervised under the covered area until the bell rings at 7:55am. Students having breakfast can go into the cafeteria at 7:45am.
Drop Off/Pick Up
Student Arrival - Morning Drop Off
All cars and buses will drop off ONLY in the right lane
Our goal is to get cars in and out of the car drop off lane as quickly as possible since both cars and buses will be using the same lane to drop off students.
If you need to assist your child in any way with getting out of the car, please do not use the car drop off lane - instead we ask that you pull into a parking space in the lower parking lot and walk your child over to the flag pole and say goodbye.
If the car drop off line is too long, feel free to park and walk your student to the flagpole.
Students will walk to the covered area on the playground and be supervised until the bell rings at 7:55am unless they are having breakfast - all breakfast eaters can go directly into the cafeteria at 7:45am.
Student Dismissal - After School Pick Up
Students will be dismissed at 2:35pm
Students that ride a bus will go directly to the bus
Parents that walk to the school will wait next to the big tree that is just behind the flagpole with the benches underneath (between the school and playground)
Parents that drive to school to pick up their student will get in the left lane and pull up to the gym doors underneath the breezeway - students will be supervised outside the gym. Drivers are asked to place a paper in driver's side window with the names of student(s) and classroom teacher to assist the staff when assisting students to their vehicle - here’s a template you can use: template)
How do families find out about bus routes?
If a student qualifies for busing, families will receive a message from Transportation with their student’s route information via ParentSquare. Elementary students who live more than one mile from school qualify for busing.
Breakfast and Lunch
Breakfast and lunch are served beginning the first day of school. Students may arrive for breakfast in the cafeteria at 7:45am and directly enter at the cafeteria doors. Staff will direct them to their classroom after eating.
Meal prices for the 2023-2024 school year: Breakfast $1.65 - Lunch $3.05
How do families ensure that their child will have a lunch to eat on the first day?
Students can bring lunches from home or purchase lunches in the school cafeteria. Staff will be available to assist students with purchasing lunches using their student numbers for the first few weeks of school.
If your child will be purchasing lunch, there are two ways to add money to your account: 1) pay at school; cash or checks are accepted in the school cafeteria or 2) pay online. SchoolCafé can be used for online payments. There’s a small fee for using SchoolCafé to make deposits.
How do families apply for free or reduced-cost school meals?
If you believe your student qualifies for free or reduced-cost meals, please visit the Meal Benefits webpage to apply.
How are food allergies handled?
If your student has any food allergies, please make sure you have filled this information when you review/update your student’s online enrollment verification in ParentVue - see district email sent to all BSD families in July. If you need help or have any questions, please call the school office (503) 356-2510.
Attendance Line
If your child is absent from school for any reason, please call the main school phone line 503-356-2510 and then press Option 1 to leave a message regarding the nature of the absence. The attendance messages are checked multiple times each day.
Enrollment Verification
Enrollment verification is all online. Please go into ParentVue and take the opportunity to update important family information, give technology permissions, and acknowledge reading important school and District information. Follow this link for information about enrollment verification to verify your child(rens) enrollment. If you have any difficulty, please contact the school office.
Beaverton School District Student/Family Handbook and West TV Family Handbook
The District expects families to read the BSD Student & Family Handbook. West TV has an additional handbook - the West TV Family Handbook. Please read both handbooks thoroughly so you and your child understand BSD and West TV expectations. The handbooks can be found on our school website.
Most policies and procedures in the handbooks are developed to enhance opportunities for learning, or to keep our school a safe place for all students and staff. The District requires that we have each family acknowledge that they have received, read, and discussed the Student/Family Handbook with their children.
West TV PTC (Parent Teacher Club)
The West TV PTC (Parent Teacher Club) is comprised of West TV parents/guardians who volunteer their time to organize opportunities for families to connect and also fundraise for programs and extra curricular activities for students and to provide support for the needs of teachers and the school. The PTC Board meets once each month in the evening and all parents/guardians are welcome to attend the meetings. PTC information will be emailed to you every week throughout the school year on Mondays in the "Monday Minute".
Please consider donating your time, energy, and ideas for West TV and the PTC. There are currently several positions open and these programs can’t be provided without volunteer support. Go to the PTC Website to see a list of open positions.
West TV All Star News, PTC Newsletter & Beaverton School District News
In an effort to reduce the amount of paper used for communication, most of the information shared by the school, the PTC, and District will be through email and the school and district websites.
The school newsletter (All Star News) and PTC Newsletter (Monday Minute) are emailed to you. Emails will include school and PTC flyers, community flyers, and other helpful resources and information.
Bus Route Information
Using your child's student ID number, you may look up the specific route and bus stop information by visiting Transportation website. The Transportation Department will send an email or autodial phone call to families with bus stop information for this school year on or around 8/21/23.
Students are expected to be at their bus at least five minutes early until our drivers learn their routes. Don’t worry if the bus is late for pick-up and drop-off during the first few weeks of school. Please note, bus drivers do not wait for an adult to be present at the afternoon bus stop.
Parking Lot Safety
Our school has a very small and busy parking lot. Students who walk to school or ride bikes are asked to be extremely cautious. It is important for students to remember to watch the crossing guard at the crosswalk and obey the stop signs. A crossing guard will lead students across Leahy Rd and in the parking lot. The routine is reversed for walking home.
School Calendar
The West TV school events calendar can be found below, on ParentSquare and also on the West TV school website. This calendar has our most current events and is updated on a regular basis.
Volunteering
Please volunteer at West TV! There are many activities and programs that you can support by volunteering. If you are interested in helping out, please respond to PTC requests for help. A background check is required for all volunteers for all Beaverton schools. Please visit the District website and click on Community and Volunteer. It can take several weeks to get on the approved volunteer list at the beginning of the year, so please complete the background check as soon as possible.
All volunteers must be registered in our volunteer management system and complete a criminal background check.
For more back-to-school information, visit the district’s website.
A Message from our School Nurse
If your child has a medication to be stored in the school health room, a parent or guardian must drop it off at the school office (please do not send it to school with your child). The medication must be in the original packaging/prescription bottle with your child's name on it.
A medication authorization form MUST be completed, signed by a parent or guardian, and brought to the school office in all medication situations. Non-prescription medication (e.g., cough drops, aspirin) also must have a medication form filled out and signed by a parent. Students may not self administer nor carry medication.
You can drop off medication at anytime. The office is open daily 7:30-3:30pm.
