CVU Celebrations
January 19, 2024
Dear CVU Community: The bowls were anything but empty on Thursday night. Our cafe was jammed with over 300 people enjoying community, eating tasty soup, and donating to the Hinesburg Food Shelf. Laura Howard, director of our Access program, let me know the Empty Bowls dinner raised approximately $6000! And...none of this goodness would have happened without Teryn Hytten. Teryn (who is regularly thought to be one of our staff members) is the inspiration and driving force of the event. Thank you, Teryn, you make CVU proud!
Upcoming Events
1/24 - Financial Aid Forms Workshop - 5:30-6:30 room 152
2/1 - 8th Grade Parent Night - 6:30-7:45
2/10 - Winter Ball - Hula
Student Council Corner
Hello, CVU, it’s Ariel! This week marked Student Council’s first meeting of the second semester. There are lots of Student Council-run events in the coming months, so get excited! We began work on the annual Blood Drive, which will run in March after we return from February break. If you are 16 or older, and meet the height and weight requirements, you are eligible to donate. You could save lives! We also began work on 8th-grade parent night, Cultural Awareness Week (info coming soon!), and Kindness Week. Let’s have a great start to Semester 2, Hawks!
Student Celebrations
Clay and James made an impressive pitch to our CVSD Leadership team on behalf of robotics students everywhere!
From John Bennett: CVU's Scholar's Bowl teams hosted their annual regional meet on Friday, 1/6, with excellent results! Eight other Vermont schools traveled to play five games each and CVU's four teams each turned in an exceptional effort.
Our varsity "A" team won all five of our games to run its record this season to a perfect 32-0. Our "B" team won its first four games and played well in a final game loss to our "A" team - this match turned out to be my 1,000th varsity team match of my CVU coaching career, which started in 2001. Our "C' team went 4-1, while our "D" team went 3-1-1 with its only loss coming against the "C" team. So if you remove our intra-squad results our four teams finished with a super 14-1-1 combined record.
In addition, the evening was highlighted by the return of eight former players who read and scored many of the games. This group included Peter Antinozzi, Isaac Krementsov, Jacob Parker, Ava Rohrbaugh, Brandon Tieso, Patton Wager, Ben Wilson, and Charlie Yarwood.
Thanks also goes to: superlative reading from Katie Mack, excellent copying and paper assistance from Jessamyn Walker, and all around outstanding support from Kiran MacCormick in all facets of this event.
Playing for CVU included the following :
12th grade - Mateo Dienz-Del Rio, Brendan Fellows, Frank Fidler, Elias Leventhal, Alexander Olszewski, Colin Ravlin and Kyle Stewart
11th grade - Leo Elder, Jacob Graham, James Haines, Zoe Mui and Wylie Ricklefs
10th grade - Leah Rauch, Clay Nicholson, Charles Redmond and Grace Warrington
9th grade - Willcox Elliott
The reunion!
From Jason Reed, Director of Burlington Technical Center: At a recent board meeting, the School Board and I had the pleasure of recognizing five students from Burlington Technical Center (BTC) who have been named presidential scholars! I had the opportunity to share words of praise from their teachers Stacey Ladd, Jason Raymond, Monica Beard-Raymond, and Ashley Stagner. I am grateful that we have so many educators like these who take the time every day to connect with their students, build relationships, and nurture their strengths and interests. In presenting this recognition I was struck by the leadership, skill, and commitment of our scholars to making our cities, towns, and schools a better place, and once again, taken aback by the great achievement and potential of our students. These scholars highlight what can happen when our students are challenged, empowered, and engaged in their learning, and their work at BTC is a shining example of the deeper learning that happens across our schools. Congratulations!
Please join me in congratulating our scholars: (from left to right below)
Apolina Mbeleci (WHS), Presidential Scholar of the Arts
Kennedy Desautels (CVU), Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education
Ayowunmi Adewuyi (SBHS), Presidential Scholar in Career and Technical Education
Sarah Ali (BHS), Presidential Scholar
Greta Ketterling (BHS), Presidential Scholar of the Arts"

The team took home victories and set school records in the 1 mile, (Alice K.), Distance Medley Relay for girls’ (Lydia D., Noe J., Audrey N., Alice K) and boy’s (Treson M., Quintin F., Charlie G., Dan K). The boys 4x400m relay (Treson M., AJ Sicard., Dan K., Quintin F.) took third place and set a school record. The girls’ 4 x 400 relay (Elsa K., Lily Gordon, Zoe J., Kate K.) took home fifth place. Avery R. placed second in the long jump and Dan K. placed fourth in the 1 mile. The team’s final regular season meet is this Sunday at UVM followed by the State Championships on January 27 at UVM.

From Betty Buehler: CVU Nordic recently had a pancake practice to celebrate their 2nd place at the Tour de Chad!
From Seth Jensen: Spanish 4 students immersed themselves in “El Día de las Tortillas” by making corn tortillas from México and tortilla de patata (potato omelette) from Spain. Authentic food and conversation bring the language to life!
From Lizzy Fox Lausier: CVU's Speech and Debate Team is celebrating multiple wins from last Friday's tournament in South Burlington. Ava Flint took 2nd place in Original Oratory for her presentation of 3 original speeches, and Nolan Ross took 1st place in the Novice Debate. Congratulations, Ava and Nolan!
From Cameron Brownell: On Tuesday, January 16, the CVU Choirs went on a tour of the four sending schools: WCS, HCS, CCS, and SCS to perform our January concert selections for the 4th-8th grade choir students. We performed several pieces in honor of Martin Luther King Jr. Day like "Lead with Love" and "Lift Every Voice and Sing", Chamber Choir members shared their personal experiences of singing at CVU, and we taught the 4th-8th graders a song to sing with our high school students.
Next Friday, January 26, 18 of our CVU singers will be attending the District Choir Festival at South Burlington High School. The performance is at 7:00 pm and general admission is $5 or $15 for a family of 4 or more paid at the door with cash, check, or Venmo.

From the GSA Club: THANK YOU to everyone who ordered their GSA merch this year! If you missed it, you might now be thinking, "Oh man, I'd really love a GSA t-shirt but it's too late to get one now..." Well, fret not! It is, in fact, NOT too late for you to buy a GSA item... because we are now selling GSA merch year-round at the Riell Deal School Store right here at CVU! Faculty/Staff Celebrations
Nothing cuter than Gavin holding a baby goat!
Laura Howard, Jennifer Morton, Emily Mitchell, Andrew Scott, and our Cafe Staff are just a few of the adults we need to thank for making the Empty Bowls dinner possible. Thank you for helping to bring a student's idea to life!
Speaking of our Cafe staff, I was so grateful to how quickly and professionally Colleen French pulled together meals in support of families who were without power. I am also thankful to Christina Daudelin who made sure CVU and our Library were open to residents of Hinesburg who would benefit from water, heat, food, and showers.
Finally, a personal thank you to Guidance Director, Ry Hoffman, who is as capable with a chainsaw as he is a leader. My family thanks you, Ry!
