Softball Highlights

Monday's game was a nail-biter. It took a five-run rally in the last inning to beat Mission Hill 7-3. the stars of the game were Taylor Ramirez with a home run, Katie Niizawa going 2-3 with a double and 2 runs scored, and Emma Niizawa going 1-1 and 2 walks with 2 runs scored. She also pitched the whole game striking out 13.

On Wednesday's game, we threw a no-hitter against Shoreline 13-0. Kiki Quintana pitched 3 innings and Ellie Howell closed the game with 1 inning. Only a hit batter kept it from being a perfect game. Offensively Katie Niizawa went 2-3 with 3 runs scored, Emma Niizawa went 3-3 with a double and 3 runs scored, Kiki Quintana went 3-3 with 2 doubles and 2 runs scored, and Taylor Ramirez 3-3 with 2 doubles and 1 run scored.

These are the awards given to 8th Grade students at Promotion:

• Valedictorian*: The student or students who have the highest GPA overall during their years at NBMS earn Valedictorian status. This award is given to 8th Graders during the promotion ceremony.

• Salutatorian*: The student or students who have the second highest GPA overall during their years at NBMS earn Salutatorian status. This award is given to 8th Graders during the promotion ceremony.

• Presidential Academic Excellence: 8th Grade students earning a cumulative of 4.0 GPA

• Principal's Academic Excellence: 8th Grade students earning a cumulative 3.8 GPA to 3.99 GPA.

• Academic Honors: 8th Grade students earning a cumulative 3.5 GPA to 3.79 GPA.

• Department Awards: Students are chosen by their teachers as most inspirational or most outstanding in their respective subject.

• Presidential Academic Achievement: Students who have demonstrated exemplary improvement in their classes nominated by 8th grade teachers.

• Outstanding Student Awards: Two outstanding students are selected by 8th grade teachers.

• Principal’s Award: A student who has been exemplary in following the New Brighton Way, being kind, safe, respectful and responsible.

*Students need to attend NBMS for at least one full year to be considered for Valedictorian or Salutatorian.

Board Members Needed

Are you looking for a way to be involved as your student enters NBMS? We are looking for parents to join our Board for 23/24. We have several members who are "aging out" and we need to fill those positions. These positions include Vice President, Treasurer and Member At Large. Teacher Appreciation Lunch Donations

Join us on May 12th as we honor our amazing NBMS Staff with a Staff Appreciation Luncheon. The NBMS Home and School Club will be providing a yummy taco lunch for the staff from "Christina's Tacos". Fishing Club: The NBMS Fishing Club will be surf-fishing at New Brighton Beach on Thursday immediately after school until 5pm. Bring your fishing poles and store them in room #51 if needed. It is recommended to wear shorts since we will be fishing at the water's edge.

Silence is not an acceptable response to bullying. Ignoring it won’t work. Everyone needs to be empowered with options for responding to bullying situations.

Take the Anti-bullying pledge by agreeing to:

• Treat others respectfully.
• Try to include those who are left out.
• Refuse to bully others.
• Refuse to watch, laugh or join in when someone is being bullied.
• Refuse to take out your cell phone and record interactions where someone is being bullied.
• Refuse to send hurtful or threatening messages, create fake accounts and send mean messages, spread lies or post embarrassing photos or videos of others on Snapchat, Instagram, and other social media platforms.
• Tell an adult.
• Help those who are being bullied.

Students are expected to follow these universal classroom expectations:

• Students should be quietly seated by the second bell.

• Students should not talk and must park their Chromebook during teacher instruction.

• Students should not get out of their seats without raising their hand and asking for teacher's permission.

• Students should be prepared to learn and have a charged Chromebook, charger, pencil, paper, and AR book.

• Students should read when finished early in all classes and in FLEX classes.

• Students should S.L.A.N.T (sit-up, listen, ask and answer questions, nod your head, and track the speaker) during teacher-led instruction and whole-group discussions.

• Students should not be listening to music on personal devices or Chromebook.

• Students should work on school assignments, iReady Math Pathway, or read for AR while in Flex class and maintain a maximum noise Level 1.

• Students should wait until the teacher dismisses the class. The bell does not dismiss students. Students will be dismissed in an orderly fashion by the teacher.

Get a free METRO Youth Cruz Free ID if you don’t have a student ID: To obtain a METRO Youth Cruz Free ID, please visit one of METRO’s Customer Service windows at either the Watsonville Transit Center or Pacific Station in Downtown Santa Cruz, during business hours, bring a form of ID or proof of grade level, and fill out a Youth Cruz Free On-Demand Form. Please allow at least 5-10 minutes for processing.

According to California law, anyone under the age of 18 must wear a bicycle helmet if using the following modes of transportation: bicycle, e-bicycle, non-motorized scooter, skateboard, inline/roller skates or as a passenger. Wearing a properly fitted bicycle helmet can dramatically reduce your risk of serious injury from a crash or fall!

NBMS Students are required to wear a helmet to and from school when riding a bike, e-bike, scooter, or skateboard. If a student does not have a helmet, the bike/ebike/scooter/skateboard will be confiscated by NBMS staff and remain in the office for parent pick-up.

Students:

• Follow the rules of the road (California Vehicle Code).
• Wear properly-fitted bicycle helmets at all times
• Ride your bike on the right side of the street in the SAME direction as traffic
• Riders and passengers should only ride on a permanent seat of a bicycle, never on the pegs or handle bars
• Learn and use proper hand signals when riding.
• Avoid using cell phones or other distracting devices when riding your bicycle.
• Parents: plan and practice the safest route to school with your child before allowing them to ride

Four common California Vehicle Code bicycle violations:

21212 CVC- Helmet Requirements

(a) A person under 18 years of age shall not operate a bicycle, a non-motorized scooter,

or a skateboard, nor shall they wear in-line or roller skates, nor ride upon a bicycle,

a non-motorized scooter, or a skateboard as a passenger, upon a street, bikeway...or any bicycle path or trail unless that person is wearing a properly fitted and fastened bicycle helmet.

22450 CVC – Stop Sign

(a) The driver of any vehicle approaching a stop sign at the entrance to, or within,

an intersection shall stop at a limit line, if marked, otherwise before entering the

crosswalk on the near side of the intersection. If there is no limit line or crosswalk,

the driver shall stop at the entrance to the intersecting roadway.

22350 CVC Unsafe Speed

(a) No person shall drive a vehicle upon a highway at a speed greater than is

reasonable or prudent having due regard for weather, visibility, the traffic on, and

the surface and width of, the highway, and in no event at a speed which endangers

the safety of persons or property.

24016(b)(4) CVC Motorized Bicycle:

In summary, Type “B” e-bikes must be operated by a person at least 16 years old

and shall obey bicycle laws.

8th-Grade Expectations

Each year the 8th Grade class has the privilege of participating in special end-of-the-year activities, including the promotion ceremony. In order to participate in the 8th Grade activities, each student must uphold the general classroom and school-wide behavioral expectations.

A student may be excluded from end-of-the-year activities, including promotion if any of the following occur:

• The student has excessive behavior infractions including detentions, and/or Friday schools or has been suspended from school.

• The student has excessive absences and tardies.

• The student has any outstanding school fees or fines.

• The student has an ‘F’ as reported on the final report card and/or does not have a passing GPA (no F’s).
