Principal's Note
This week, I want to highlight two significant events: Hispanic Heritage Month and the Otter Trot.
On Thursday the 28th, we had an amazing Hispanic Heritage Month Assembly celebration. Some of our fantastic 5th graders educated us about the "10 Things You Need to Know About Hispanic Heritage Month" in English and Spanish. We also learned how to Salsa dance, and our 3rd, 4th, and 5th-grade students enjoyed some extra hip-hop lessons. Take a look at the happy otter faces in the photos!
The next thing I want to talk about is the Otter Trot that's happening on October 5th.
WHAT IS THE OTTER TROT?
It's an amazing opportunity to have fun at school with your children. Come and run with us as we cheer for all our otters to have a great time!
WHAT ARE WE FUNDRAISING FOR?
The SCO is fundraising in order to provide educational opportunities for students, family nights, whole school celebrations, staff appreciation & much much more. Last year, some of the funding went towards creating indoor recess kits for each of the classrooms.
WHO CAN COME?
Everyone is invited! Families can make signs, cheer, and help show support for our school!
HOW CAN I SHOW SUPPORT?
You can either donate, volunteer, or simply come and cheer.
WHAT TO WEAR
Students should wear sneakers and seasonally appropriate clothing for running outdoors.

October is Bullying Prevention Month
By Mrs. Leon
Dear Meadow View Families,
I'm Mrs. Leon, the school counselor, and I'm thrilled to support our students and teachers during this Bullying Prevention Month. Our goal is to create a safe and kind school environment. Here's what we have planned for this month:
- Our teachers will undergo their first Welcoming School Anti-bullying Training on October 5th.
- Classroom teachers will use the Second Step program to teach Bullying Prevention lessons.
- In this newsletter, I'll provide insight into Bullying Prevention to educate our caregivers on what it is and how we support our students at Meadow View.
Stay tuned for more updates and information on this important topic!
What are the Bullying Prevention Unit Lessons?
As part of our commitment to creating a safe and respectful school environment, we are focusing on Bullying Prevention this October. We use the Second Step program to teach essential skills for getting along and excelling in school. During this month, we're incorporating the Second Step Bullying Prevention Unit into our curriculum. Your child will learn:
- How to recognize when bullying occurs.
- How to report bullying to a caring adult.
- How to refuse to let bullying happen to themselves or others.
- How to support someone being bullied by standing up for them and promoting kindness and inclusivity.
- How to recognize, report, and refuse cyberbullying.
To make this effort successful, everyone at school plays a role. Our staff is trained to recognize and respond to bullying, support students involved, and foster a positive school climate. We also need your help. If you hear about bullying at our school, please let us know. Teach your child to report bullying and understand that bullying is never acceptable.
If you have any questions about the Bullying Prevention Unit or the Second Step program, please don't hesitate to contact me. You can also find more information about our anti-bullying policy and procedures on our school website or by reaching out to the school office
What is the Difference Between Conflict, Rude, Mean, and Bullying?
At Meadow View, we want to ensure that every student feels loved, safe, celebrated, and has access to a high-level education every day. To achieve this, it's important to distinguish between various interpersonal situations that may arise at school: conflict, rudeness, meanness, and bullying.
Please refer to the attached graph to understand the differences between these terms. We believe that by understanding these distinctions, we can better support our students and maintain a positive school environment
Social Worker Snippets
Did you know...?
- Starting in preschool and kindergarten, too many absences can cause children to fall behind in school.
- Missing 10%, or about 2 days each month over the course of a school year, can make it harder to learn to read.
- Students can still fall behind if they miss just 1 or 2 days every few weeks.
- Being late to school may lead to poor attendance

Protective Behaviors
As in previous years, we are continuing our Protective Behaviors program in the elementary schools. This is an abuse prevention program designed to educate our children in the principles of self-protection. This will consist of a developmentally appropriate video and a follow up discussion. This year we will continue using the Play It Safe! Curriculum. Throughout October, I will present the video to classrooms on a day selected by their classroom teacher. These lessons will be completed by October 27th. Your child will receive notification about the day and time from their teacher beforehand. If you have any questions, please contact me at 608-478-5020 or kjeyers@sunprairieschools.org
