North Chevy Chase Elem. School
Principal's Weekly Update
September 3, 2023
From our Principal
Good Afternoon NCC students and Families,
This is Principal Wallace-Kimbrue, and I'm here with our first weekly update of the year. School will be closed on Monday, September 4, 2023, in observance of the Labor Day holiday. Classes will resume on Tuesday, September 5, 2023.
You matter! At NCCES, every student matters. We expect all students to come to school every day, ready to give their very best.
Back To School Night
Mark your calendars for this Tuesday, September 5, 2023! It's one of the most important nights of the school year, and transportation will be provided. Bus transportation will be available from the Silver Spring area. Also, KAH (Kids After Hours) childcare will be available as well for school aged children. We hope to see you then!

Parent Volunteers Needed for Lunch & Recess:
If you have some free time and are interested in volunteering during lunch and/or recess, we would love to have you! Please click the link to find out how you can help; volunteers are always needed.
Cell Phones: In accordance with MCPS policies, students are allowed to carry cell phones to school. However, students must ensure that their cell phones are turned off during the school day, kept in their backpacks, and not used until they leave school grounds. If a student is found using a cell phone, it will be confiscated, and parents will be notified. Continuous violations of these expectations may result in the revocation of the privilege to carry a cell phone. Please note that school staff cannot be held responsible for lost or stolen phones. For more detailed information, please review the updated regulation on Personal Mobile Devices (PMD).

A Statement about Bullying: Bullying is strictly prohibited at North Chevy Chase Elementary School. Any form of bullying will not be tolerated. Students who engage in such behavior will face consequences in accordance with the MCPS student code of conduct, as determined by the administration. We appreciate your support in emphasizing to your child(ren) the importance of not engaging in or tolerating such behaviors and reporting them immediately when they occur.
Attendance: Parents should call the school by 8:30 a.m. on the day their child will be absent. Students will be marked as absent for the morning (a half-day absence) if they arrive at school more than two hours late. Similarly, students will be marked as absent for the afternoon (a half-day absence) if they leave school more than two hours before the end of the day. If students are absent from school for more than two hours but less than four hours, they will be recorded as absent for a half-day. Additionally, students who arrive tardy (after 9:15 a.m.) must report to the main office to receive a tardy slip, and parents or guardians must accompany their child into the building.
Medication and Health Room: Distribution of medication is not permitted in school without written permission from the parent or guardian and a physician's statement. Medical forms are available in the health room and are required for each episode of illness and for each prescribed medication. Staff members are not permitted to administer any medication, including aspirin or Tylenol.
Release of Children: For a safe and orderly dismissal, it is requested that parents who wish to pick up their children to attend afternoon appointments do so before 3:15 p.m. Picking up students between 3:15 – 3:50 p.m. is very disruptive to the dismissal process. When picking up students prior to 3:15 p.m., parents must sign them out in the front office. The students will be called from the classroom to the office. For safety reasons, students will not be released directly from the classroom. If an emergency should arise during the day which changes the dismissal plan for your child, please call the school as soon as possible to ensure adequate notice for your child. If there is a scheduled change in your child’s regular dismissal plan, please send a note in the morning or call the school at (240) 204-5280. Without written notification, your child will follow their normal dismissal plan.
Students Being Picked Up by Someone Other Than the Parent: In keeping with MCPS policy, only parents and/or persons authorized in writing by parents may pick up a child from school. If it is necessary for a student to be picked up by someone other than the parent, the school must receive written permission from the parent. Please make sure your emergency contact information is updated. Parents may send the school a note authorizing a specific individual to pick up their child. Persons will be asked to show a photo identification card before releasing the student.
Social/Emotional Wellness: Our student Wellbeing Team is excited to welcome our North Chevy Chase students back to school. We are excited to continue our well-being classes this school year! Mrs. Breeding, school counselor, will meet with each class every other week and bring engaging lessons that will foster social-emotional development. Students will learn relationship-building skills, seeking and giving support, and social-emotional goal setting.
PTA: We have a very active PTA and urge you to become involved! Our PTA president, Mrs. Rita Montoya, and all of the PTA officers are looking forward to working with the entire NCC community in the upcoming year. PTA meetings are held throughout the year and a calendar of meeting dates will be forthcoming! Our PTA will share information at Back to School Night next week.
